Does anybody know if this would work in my car with a power inverter or whether that would be a horrible idea? I'm not sure if I'd introduce all sorts of whine.
If anybody could offer some insight or advice I'd appreciate it.
I just got a Sony Xperia Z3 Android phone and it supports a USB DAC and DSD. I'm thinking of putting this in my car in between my not so great stock head unit and my new amp. In that config, it would boost voltage. I could then switch to the USB DAC input and connect to to my phone to get great quality straight from my phone.
Any idea if this would work?
How much output voltage / amps does the USB port put out of any? I wonder if it could charge my phone.

jon_wui would probably advise that you not do this, as it's really not how the unit is meant to be used at all and it would probably be more of a headache then it's worth... spend the money on a nicer head unit (you can get a really nice one for $160) Most new (high end) head units are equipped with bluetooth which would be much more convenient then USB in a car.
would it work, probably, but it would be far from ideal.
to answer the question about USB power, there is none. it's an input so it expects your computer/whatever to be outputting power on the USB line (it doesn't use this power, but for this reason it cannot output power via the USB)

ggfoolsThanks for the advice. Yea now I realize since it's the host there's no power so that would be the worst part since it'd drain my phone - esp while running both Spotify and Waze with the screen on. I could probably hook up the dock port for power but it's such a pain to plug it all in and unplug it.
I recently upgraded my speakers in the car to some mid-range ones with an Arc Audio XDi 600.4 amp, but I really don't know how much switching out for another HU would help when I'm just running sound from my phone anyways. I guess I won't know until I try.
I have a cheap aptX receiver hooked up now that works great with my phone, but it does sound a bit crisper and more detailed with the wired connection as expected. While the Bluetooth is so convenient, it feels silly that I paid to upgrade my sound system but then muddle the output with Bluetooth even if it is at least using aptX.

jon_wuBluetooth is a digital signal just like USB so how good it sounds depends entirely on the DAC inside your head unit, if the DAC is good bluetooth should sound exactly the same. a higher end head unit would probably have a better dac, which should make all the difference if your current head unit creates poor sound when using bluetooth.

ggfoolsYeah whatever I have now is a $40 accessory that's plugged into my HU's aux in so I'm sure the DAC in that thing is dirt cheap. True that the Bluetooth is digital too, but things are getting recompressed again with a lossy codec which will change quality somewhat, but it's impossible to tell if it's the aptX transmission or the DAC in my cheap adapter that's limiting without having more toys to try.
Since I don't have a headphone amp, I decided to get in on this anyways and I'll probably end up using it with my MacBook Pro or regifting for Christmas.
