For what it's worth, a $15 obdII wifi (or Bluetooth) adapter and free iPhone app does then exact same thing...in fact some of them can do more when it comes to car diag.
Ebay has it for $72.00 with free shipping.
Actually yeah I'm wrong. With the 13 dollar shipping cost on here, it's not worth it at all to buy it on Massdrop. You can get it cheaper on Amazon.

I'm wondering if you should consider extending the drop because there were people like myself who didn't want to join at first because of the cost of shipping
Andrew_Cortesi
@Andrew_Cortesi,
Good point - I have extended the drop for an extra day to give this drop the highest chance of success.
Based off the link here it doesn't seem like they sell your private data or anything else. Not sure if I would have quite the same privacy concerns. https://www.automatic.com/legal/#privacy
The price point needs to come down a bit more for this offer to be attractive. As others have said, it's the same price on Amazon, target, elsewhere... With shipping, what's the incentive? With the wait time, WHY PAY MORE TO HAVE IT LATER??? So I join the drop and I shave $5 when it hits the target, then wait longer? Screw that, I'll pay the $5 "premium" to have it in a reasonable time frame.
Also, with the cloud logging... what options do you have to limit / disable how much information is sent? I don't need my info computed or stored on the cloud, it's my personal data, it can be done on my phone. So what's likely happening here is that they are selling your driving / behavioral data while charging you for the product, double dip much? I'll pass... sucks, I was really excited about a system like this too.

Thanks for the info on whether or not it will be compatible with different cars. However about the price, while I agree that Massdrop tends to take forever to ship things, I can't seem to find it cheaper elsewhere. I looked on Amazon and it's $98.55. Same thing on Target, $99. So other than EBay where people are selling 1st gen used Automatic devices, this seems to be the best price.
I have a question. Does the same device plug into any car or when you purchase it do you have to get one for your specific car model? Let's say I get into a car accident and I need to buy a new car. I don't want my automatic device to be worthless because it doesn't fit the port of my new car.
Andrew_Cortesi
So long as you have a vehicle made in or past 1996, this device will interface just fine with your OBDSII port. It's the same device type that your mechanic uses to figure out what codes your engine is throwing. However... be wary that they process your data on the cloud. This is usually a means of getting around laws regulating what they can and can not do with your information, and when it is passed over to a third party vendor, good luck tracking it / stopping it's spread. You are being charged for a product as well as having YOUR LOCATION AND DRIVING HABITS SOLD OFF. This is also the same exact price on other sites, these orders take a long time to ship, and you can buy one that will tell you the diagnostic information alone for far cheaper. You would be wise to pass on this.
All of the orders have been shipped and are now on the way to you! Once tracking is available, you will receive a confirmation email with tracking information. Please allow 24-48 hours for this information to update in the courier’s system.

Bulk shipment received! Our warehouse team confirmed that the group's order arrived earlier and now they're working hard to break everything down into the individual packages for shipment to each of you. We will monitor their progress closely and update the group once all packages are sent out.
Expect another update from us on 7/20 or sooner if something comes up.
If you have any questions, please visit our Help Center (https://massdrop.com/helpcenter).
Thanks again for joining this drop! We have submitted the group's order with the vendor for the Automatic Connected Car Adapter (Gen 2) and they are working hard to prepare it for shipment.
As soon as the group's order is ready at the vendor's location, they will send the bulk shipment to our warehouse in New Jersey where our warehouse team will break it up into individual orders and ship them. The current estimated ship date from our warehouse is 7/19.
We will keep the group updated throughout the fulfillment process. You can expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 7/13.

HA!
What is the difference between this and a ODB reader off Amazon for $20?

mattd55
@20 OBD readers will only show you the code - have to look up what it means and no logging off performance data
mattd55
Hey, hopefully you haven't committed to this yet, please see my other comments further down below. Basically, the big difference is everything it offers versus the diagnostics, BUT, they also store and compute your information on the cloud. What this means is that this information will pass through third party vendor hands, which they have no legal responsibility to oversee what is done with it, nor do you have any legal recourse should you find out later and want to stop it. By that time, your data has been sold multiple times over. It's one thing to be offered a service for free and have they done, but having to pay for it and knowing that they will be double dipping? I'd pass.
I see this is dropping again, which is good...but the minimum is still this $79.99 price point? This is the best discount that a group buy can do? (FYI this is $79.99 with free shipping on Amazon, or BB w/ price match if you prefer that. As for eBay, brand new fluctuates within the $60-70 band, though now we're comparing apples to oranges.) I wish I could support you guys, but $80 + shipping simply can't compete with large e-retailers that allow you to triple-dip rewards.

I'd also like to pick this up, but it'd be silly to vs Amazon being a better deal and can get it faster.
Sweet! This can only mean that Gen 3 is around the corner, can't wait to offload my Gen 2 on ebay.

Because I got an offer in my inbox when gen 2 was being released to save $20 on a Gen 1. Now we're starting to see things regarding the Gen 2 price drops which can only mean that they are liquidating stock in preparation for Gen 3. I also got my Gen 2 around this time last year I believe (don't quote me on that, I need to check my paypal account).

You are correct...so Massdrop contracted for a lot and Amazon has matched the price. Good job Massdrop - will wait 30 days also with your SLOW DHL shipping. Pass on this drop!
Just got and installed mine in my 2011 Dodge Challenger. Super easy and quick setup. Very impressed so far.

Is there anybody from Europe with experience using this gadget? In the description it says that if my car's US equivalent is supported, that doesn't mean that it's going to work with my European car. This is the only reason I haven't bought it yet but I would be interested in the next drop if it works with my EU VW Golf mk4 and EU Jetta mk5
Maniello
The device itself will work with your car. That's not the problem.
But last time I check, the Automatic companion app wasn't widely available outside of the US. And you definitely need the app to fully take advantage of the data the dongle is able to grab from your car.
nelson
I have a US Apple ID, so getting the app isn't an issue. I thought there might be a difference between the EU and US cars' software or something that renders the dongle unusable in some cases. Thanks for clearing that up!

Hey I really really wanna order this but I can only order it if it can arrive by May 23, not ship on May 23! Is it possible?
Can you start your car with this?
MattSpatt
Nope.
Their latest update completely shit the bed for TONS of users. My device, as of a month ago, no longer pairs with any of my phones. While their engineers are aware of this problem, they either haven't solved it or their customer service failed to communicate the solution to me. Massive disappointment.
Elliott
Could you elaborate a bit more?
Which update are you referring to specifically? iOS app/Android app/Gen 1 device firemware/Gen 2 device firmware? And which version?
I have an iPhone 6 Plus pair with 1 x gen 1 dongle and 2 x gen 2 dongle, I haven't experience any issues with pairing in recent weeks.
Elliott
LOL. Shit the bed...
I bought one of these retail at Best Buy. I use it to track my mileage since I am self employed. About once a month I have to release and repair it with my phone (had this experience with 2 androids and an iPhone) but it works fairly decent overall, but does require your phone at all times, even for emergency calls if you get in an accident.
Why isn't there a link in the description to check if your car is compatible...
fwiw, I use Dash Command and a wifi obd reader on my diesel. cheaper than this drop too
packeteer
you can clear codes with Dash command?
Thaikodrums
Yes mate, check the description on the app store
Does this also clear codes?
ScottG13
Yes it does.
Sorry to say this but, this is just an OBD II scanner with a few extra features. I have an ODB II scanner that i can connect to with bluetooth (just like this one) and it can read engine errors, and real time information like speed, RPM, engine temp, Mass air flow, ect. I bought it for not joking $4.66 on ebay. Now granted this has way more features like GPS and a nicer looking application for your phone. But in my opinion, for what your getting, its worth about half as much as they are asking for it.
angrybaconman
Yea, it's important to note that there are plenty of these available out there in the ~$20 range right on amazon.
angrybaconman
If all you are looking for is to look for OBDII codes and system vitals from time to time, I suppose you can find equivalent devices pretty easily that cost less than an Automatic.
I found the constant logging it does in the background to be very helpful. If nothing else, the extra money I was able to get when I sold my previous cars because I had thorough Automatic trip loggings more than pays for the device itself.
I got this last time around (Gen 2) and it works great! I am getting one now for my girlfriend so we can see who is the better driver (also she is not very good at keeping up with maintenance).
The Gen 2 pairs well better than I expected, I ended up turning all the beeps off. So it pairs when it pairs (meaning it does not have to be paired all the time and with the sound off I am not aware of when it is pairing), but when I go to the app at the end of the day I can see a recap of my trips. The only complaint I have is its driving scoring system, there are instances where you have to accelerate a little more than usual or break to adapt to someone else in front of you. Besides that it works great! I would recommend this to anyone wanting to keep track of their vehicle a little more closely or wants to have a little competition with a friend.
I like the approach, though I am a international diesel driver. But maybe something a bit more.. tasty going up next time.
I got one on the last drop and have been very impressed. It paired with my iPhone quickly and painlessly. I have had no connection issues since then. Nifty little device.
