Are they made in Hawaii? Regardless of the company's location, if it is NOT made in Hawaii, then it cannot be called an Aloha shirt, only a Hawaiian shirt. An Aloha shirt, MUST be made in Hawaii.
AntibacterialMost people who I work with in the S.F. Bay Area seem to know the difference. Aloha shirts are made in Hawaii. Hawaiian shirts are made anywhere in the world. But then I realize that most Millennials don't know.
bsatowNot being a millennial I cant give you a notion one way or the other.
At least here in Australia a shirt made in Hawaii would be thin on the ground and Aloha not really a term most people would hear. It would be a Hawaiian shirt whether it was from there or from Bali or wherever.
bsatowI'll ask around and see if anyone knows what a Aloha shirt is and see if random humans get that apparently that term would denote the location of manufacture to be the Hawaiian islands.
Sounds unlikely but you never know.
AntibacterialI mean I knew that Aloha shirt meant Hawaiian shirt in American but not that native hawaiian shirts were Aloha shirts.
What do they call a Tommy Bahama shirt ?
AntibacterialAn Aloha shirt will always say made in Hawaii on the label. Sorry, I did not know you were from Australia, which explains the reason why you may not of known about it.
It's a cultural issue with the locals from Hawaii. They don't want their cultural identity destroyed by mass Chinese or Philippine manufacturers like many of their locally made souvenir items. For example, it's terrible to go to Hawaii to buy let's say a puka shell necklace and give it as a gift to someone and it says, made in China on it. LOL!
bsatowMakes sense.
I wonder though how many Aloha shirts manufactured in Hawaii are made of silk?
Love the Avanti shirts but wouldn't be adverse to some cotton or linen Alohas maybe RJC brand ?
AntibacterialIn Hawaii, they make Aloha shirts just about any material from cotton, linen, silk, rayon, even that cheap sweaty polyester. I tend to like the rayon and silk ones because they are cool. It really depends on the price and who makes it. I know a lot of tourists go to Hawaii and buy some pretty nice silk Aloha shirts, but they tend to not bring them back to the mainland U.S. so lots of them end up in thrift stores like Goodwill. When I was younger, I used to find some pretty expensive Aloha shirts for $5 or $10 and there were racks and racks of them. I don't know if it is still like that, apparently that sort of tourist shopping info was published in some Japanese travel brochures so it kind of killed off those deals.. LOL!
bsatowI have never heard of this distinction and I have been to Hawaii many times. As far as I know, they are called Aloha shirts in Hawaii and Hawaiian shirts pretty much everywhere else, doesn’t matter where they’re from. But obviously a “true” Aloha or Hawaiian shirt would be made in Hawaii. Anything else should be called a “camp shirt”. But to the average person any brightly colored large tropical print shirt will always be a Hawaiian shirt.
And no, I am not a Millenial. Whatever that has to do with it.
