In business since 1891, Ball Watch has become known as the official railroad standard. So it makes sense they’d take a swing at a watch inspired by an old freight train: the Union Pacific Big Boy, a hulking steam locomotive used to haul freight in the 1940s. At 46 millimeters, this stainless steel watch is a “big boy,” to be sure. Its large case warrants the large applied hour markers, which are made even easier to see thanks to the tritium tubes fixed inside. Also of note is the date window at 3 and the bold Union Pacific Railroad logo at 6. The movement is a Ball RR1102 automatic of 25 jewels. It’s protected by a sapphire crystal and a thick stainless steel case that’s water resistant to 100 meters. Flip the case over and you’ll find a nice engraving of the locomotive the watch was named for.
