In order to truly evaluate this amp, you need the THD spec and signal-to-noise ratio. Since Massdrop products are not returnable, you have 3 sources by which to make a buying decision: word of mouth, product reviews and spec sheets. I for one put spec sheets at the top of my list. Especially when it is Beyer writing the specs. They are VERY honest.
I see you've listed 24 bit 192 kHz which the device does not support.
logicPwn
Thanks for pointing that out, it was correct in the specs but was an error in the second paragraph. Fixed!
It saddens me that after waiting for a very long time for these to drop, MD doesn't ship this internationally. I guess I'll have to settle for the Astel & Kern AK10 available locally for around $230.

I appreciate you looking into the matter, but I unfortunately won't be joining the drop as the discount being offered here in MD isn't sufficient enough for me to choose this over the locally available AK10 on which the A200p is based on.
But on a positive note, at least other international shippers who have been affected by the outdated no-ship tag can join in.
+1 on the unreliable postal service. LOL that!
Bring this back! :)
Why was this in the email today?
FoxxElite

I had a chance to play with this unit quite a bit at CES 2014, and I assure you, it doesn't drive 600 ohm cans very well. It sounded quite good with the portable line of phones (which is what it's intended for, they had it mated to a T50p), and it did ok with T90s up to mid-high volume, but it was poor with T70s and the T1. It's a nice unit, very small with a nice solid feel, but do not buy this thinking it will drive your new HE-500s.
I have questions. Why does this dac/amp cost so much ? I see a good amount of mobile dac/amps that are as good or better for a less price. Why should people consider this one over one of them ?

The max power for the a200p is ~100 mW, which isn't enough for most medium to high impedance cans. I have actually tried these with the HD800, LCD-XC, and LCD-3, and it did not drive them very well. Its great for IEMs though
It's bare minimum I think for cellphones as a DAC/amp. Headfonia says the C5D is better, but it may not be as flexible and is certainly much larger.

Is there a reliable way to use this with a lightning to old-school iPod (e.g. classic) converter? Also do we know definitively if it works with an iPod as the bypass?
A Bit More Quality "the A200p has a depth of 24 bit and frequency of 192 kHz"
Specs "DAC with up to 24 bit resolution at 96 kHz sampling frequency"
Which is it?
bmos
yep just asked that myself
TheProfosist
I'm fairly sure they're quoting from the specs of the DAC chip itself when they use 192 kHz as a maximum limit. Just from the fact that it works with Windows without additional drivers infers UAC 1 / 96 kHz, since UAC2 under Windows currently requires 3rd party drivers.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but a while back I read about the cable on these things are not very durable, and due to the custom, circular plug and deeply sunken connector, you're going to need to get a special replacement cable which A&K is not making available for iPhone (lightning version) only Android was available and that was through eBay.
Just a bit of FYI on these.
Will this work with my nexus 5? Haven't heard about USB out with the nexus 5... Wondering if I should just get this or wait for the Fiio X5 to go with my upcoming JH Roxanne's...
GL1TCH3D
Odds are this will have the same limitations as the Fiio E18, in that unless the kernel supports it, you likely will have to try one of those paid apps to get it working.
is it 24bit 96khz or 24bit 192khz the description and tech specs are different.
I wonder how well this plays with a T1...
I just remembered doesnt samsung use non-standard USB OTG on their phones? I have a GS4 so any idea what I would have to do to get it to work?
could this work solely on a PC as well?

Thanks I just thought i would ask since it might be nice to have good audio everywhere you go on everything (phone and computer). Itt is also quite small to some other ones ive seen that are "portable".
TheProfosist
Sure thing, definitely a reasonable use case, especially since it charges via USB while in use.
Does it work with an ipod using the old ipod/iphone jack, and does it completely by-pass the ipod DAC to allow high resolution files to be played off a regular ipod?
srkstan
This video indicates that it uses micro-usb or a lightning cable, depending on the device:
Is there a difference between this and the Astell & Kern AK10, aside from branding? They look very similar. If so this is a much better deal.
sonicradish
As far as I know, they're the same thing. The cables that come with this are all wrapped in A&K stickers. That's not a definitive thing, but they're certainly not trying to hide their involvement (the box even has Astell & Kern on it in a couple places).
sonicradish
Apparently it's a Beyer rebranded version of the Astell & Kern AK10, "with a few modest changes to suite Beyer's needs within their line-up of headphone products". (http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/ces-2014-beyerdynamic-t51p-headphones-and-a200p-dacamp) Would be interesting to know what tweaks Beyer made aside from re-branding. I imagine largely the same, but presumably the better choice if you're sporting Beyer headphones.
