This is the manufacturer discontinued version right? No backplates, and standard cable correct?

SyDRoXAs far as I know, yes. The newer model is the Custom One Pro Plus which, as you said, has the new side plates (made of cardboard, not metal), etc.

SlaanderAs far as I know, more accurately, Custom One Pros are the older version and have been replaced by the Custom One Pro Plus which has a different cord and replaceable ear plates (just a design element). They also have (in the Custom line of cans) Custom Street which is for portability, Custom One Pro Plus which is an all-rounder, and Custom Studio which is for studio work.
I own the black Custom One Pro Plus and it works well with you on the street or parked at home on your desk. The cord length is just great if I have my phone in my side pocket - it's long enough that it doesn't tug if I turn my head and short enough that it doesn't tangle on other things.
The changeable covers aren't really worth it unless you plan on changing it quite often. The default covers it comes with are metal while the rest of the packaged ones are cardboard. I only changed them once and that was the day I got it.
One consideration is the microphone. The Custom One Pros have a separate attachment for a microphone (think headset) while the Plus has a build in mic in the cord. It has one button that lets you play/pause songs on your phone (my phone's an Android, no idea if it works with other phones). It also lets you answer calls. So far the microphone's okay. I don't have to put it in my mouth like other brands just so my voice is audible.
Audio is great both attached to my phone or my computer. I've not tried it yet with a DAC/amp (I've only tried that with my K7XX's). Should be good too, I bet, but both the K7XX and the K553 Pros have freaking long cords that will most likely trip me if I went out with them.
I also have a huge head and wear glasses and I've noticed a lot of headphones I've tried end up giving me severe pain after an hour or two of usage. The end up either pinching my ear or stabbing my glasses into my head. I've not encountered top-of-the-head pain like other users.
Another issue is if you sweat, your ears get wet with these cans. I take them out sometimes and while I don't use them for exercise, unfortunately, where I live is hot and any short walk will leave you sweaty. It's not a big deal for me so I usually just take them off my ears and slide them down to my neck to cool off. At the end of the day tho I wipe the ear pads so they don't end up stinking that stupid sweat smell.
I didn't include any technical stuff 'cause that's easily searcheable on the interwebs. I personally don't think the COP Plus is worth it compared to the COP. I'd rather have gotten the COP but I did get the Plus so there's my personal experience having them.

KyrosActually, original CoP do feature changeable covers but Plus comes with several of the included in the package while original has only ones. Didn't know they were cardboard, though.
You should get valour pads to fix the sweatting issue.

parasemicI know it's always been interchangeable but the covers were always sold separately, right?
These I'm not sure if it's exactly cardboard per se but it's a thick paper-like material, lol.
Thinking about the velour pads... I think the bigger problem is the stupid climate where I live, sigh.

KyrosYeh, covers are sold separate, but it should be no problem to make them DIY. You can try laminating paper or printing them and layering a plastic cover.
