Can someone describe the sound, and in particular the base? Asking for a friend who is looking into getting HD598 but wasn't impressed with my HD595's base.

ey51I don't like the bass on 598. There is a bump in the midbass and subbass is totally lacking. The bass on the dt770 is very well extended and subbass is clearly audible and deep. Mids on the other hand sounds a bit recessed compared to 598 and there are no warmth in it. Both are not dark headphones, but highs on dt770 are clearer. DT770 have a descent isolation and doesn't sound very closed. So depending on genres, for modern music and pop I like DT770 more. 598 shines on vocal and instrumental music. Hope that helps.

aylovThe way you describe them, they (Beyer DT770 Pro) sound a lot like the Fostex TH-X00 series, is it the case?

aylov@aylov gives a pretty accurate description of DT770 vs 598. As a Sennheiser fan (HD580, HD600) I think the DT770 upper mid and highs are too prominent, and in particular some samples are excessively bright. That said, I (and many recording engineers) rely on them, especially for vocal tracking. They are the most "open" sounding closed-back cans I know of and they have much better isolation than open-back HD598 SR obviously. I haven't heard the HD598Cs (closed back version), and am not as happy with HD280's.

ey51The bass on the DT770 (I own the 250 ohm version) goes a lot deeper (still going strong below 50hz) than on the HD598 (which I also own / and rolls off a lot more below 50 - 60 hz). The DT770 is quite a bit more trebly than the Sennheiser, so if you don't mind that and like deep bass, go for the DT770. If you like a more relaxed, even sound and a large soundstage, go for the (open back) HD598. Having said that, soundstage on the DT770 is quite good for a closed back design.
The HD598 (and probably the HD595 as well) is quite sensitive to output impedance of your amp. If it is the typical 100 Ohms of a consumer grade CD player or receiver, they will sound horribly bloated in the midbass and will seem to lack subbass a lot more. If you connect them to an amp with low output impedance (typically <1 Ohm), they will sound a lot more punchy.
The 250 Ohm version of the DT770's is a lot less critical, they sound good on almost anything as long as it delivers enough juice.

PeteMtlI don't know. Never heard Fostex TH-X00. But they are in different price category. I bought my DT770 pro for £ 100 from Amazon and I'm very happy with the purchase.

Merv73@Merv73 @aylov @ralphgonz thank you for your replies. I just realised that I misspelled bass. :||
