The description is incorrect. The 880 is a "semi-open" design but the 990 is fully "open".

erkolsonTo be fair, the DT990 also has a significant amount of mass in front of the driver blocking its sound, it's its technically also a semi-open headphone even if Beyerdynamic likes to call it fully open.

CamperIVTechnically the mass is behind the driver. I think the difference between "open", "closed", and "semi-open" is the extent to which the mass behind the driver effects the impedance of the space. A closed design performs similar to to a closed speaker cabinet/infinite baffle, the open design is like an open baffle, and the semi-open would be somewhere in between. Given that Beyerdynamic engineers call this an "open" design, I would assume the backing performs much like the others that get that classification.

tryzubOk, well, I have a pair of the DT-990 and the DT-880 and I'd say the 990's are very open, and the 880's are less so.
