MickxalYoutubeI've never understood this very well. I get that a higher ohm rating means it will take more juice to blow out the headphones, but also means that it requires more juice to get them working. Is there some other reason you would want higher ohms?

psicloneWell the 32ohm is the only one that is different from the two other options. The 32 ohm is perfect for portable use as it doesn't require a lot of juice to power them. The 250ohm and 600ohm have a different frequency curve than the 32 ohm. Because it requires more power to move the drivers, you will get more precision and definition with higher ohm headphones. Thats why sennheisers has 300 ohm headphones and "usually" great headphones have higher ohms.

MickxalYoutubeSo, you're saying they're more crisp, refined, and have a wider range than ones that require less power?

psicloneWider range? No. Refined? Yes. Crisp? Maybe. Sonical performance on higher ohm versions are better.

psicloneHigher ohm headphones have thinner wires with more windings on the voice coils in the drivers. This makes the membrane + voicecoil assembly lighter and "faster", with better impulse response and clarity. That is, all other things being equal. There exist magnificent low impedance headphones. With Beyer, go for 250 or 600 ohm unless you want to use them on a smartphone. I own a 250 ohm DT770 Pro. It's excellent. Most Beyers have very forward treble, so if you're extremely treble sensitive, go for one of the Sennheisers or the Porta Pro for portable use, also on Massdrop. But for comfort and nice "fresh/crispy" detailed sound, Beyers are great. And they're still handmade in Germany, which is awesome, especially in these days of made in China clones of former glory.

psicloneA certain ohm rating isn't a proper way to judge most headphones by sound quality, but in the case of Beyerdynamic the higher ohm models do sound better. Expect better transient response. Tighter bass, highs not being as sharp yet being clearer and more defined, etc. The 250 ohm model is the best middle ground and anyone with a desktop amp should be able to run them. The 600 ohm models are not too picky but definitely requires more power. I have heard that beyer's 600 ohm models and 250 ohm models are close to indistinguishable. Some of their best headphones like the Amiron Home and DT1990 are 250 ohm models. I have a 600 ohm pair of dt880s and they've served me well. I wish I had the 250s next to me so I could compare side by side but alas, I do not. The 880s are a tad bass-shy but have a big soundstage and airy quality to them. I like them a lot for how cheap you can get them, they are also very light-weight but feel quality enough. The biggest downside is a lack of detachable cables for these headphones. I did mod mine to actually have dual detachables (I'd only recommend 1 detachable, way easier).
Ohms and power needed can also be sort of misleading when it comes to your headphones. For example the hd650 (300 ohms), k7xx (60 ohms), ether c (45 ohms) all require almost the exact same amount of power to get to the same volume level. You want to look at sensitivity to determine how loud it can get.
Anyways cheers, I don't know what HP you own or your listening preferences but gl on your audiophile journey.

UzuzuTnx. I don't consider myself an audiophile per se. I'm currently using a pair of Cowin E7s, which aren't audiophile quality at all, but for $35 they're good enough for now. I wanted to get a pair of Audio Technica M40x, but decided to save up for now.

psicloneI have several sets of headphone, one of which is the Audio Technica M50, which I bouht on Amazon bundled with New York Audio Bluetooth adapter. I paid $170 for the bundle. these are an amazing value. Close back so very little sound leak.
Do they sound as good as My Sennheiser HD-600 with a tube amp... absolutely not, but they still have a great sound, convenient, minimal sound leak.
I cant speak to the Audio Technica M40x you’re considering. I wanted the higher rated M50 and I use them mostly at night so I don’t disturb my wife, like the Sennheiser does.

Dublin_BobHaving owned both a m40x and m50x in the past (the m50x was my first headphone that started getting me into better music) I can say the m40x sounds better. It's more balanced.

UzuzuMaybe I should try a pair. Only have the MX50 and based my purchase on reviews.
