Would this be a good purchase for a first open back?

Erak606Sure, but you can get the DT 990 Pro (250 ohm version) on Amazon now for less. It sounds a little beefier and fuller from the mid-range down. It's not a special edition, so doesn't look as cool as this drop. It also feels cheap and a little fragile, but mine has held up fine after 100s of hours. Either way, the Beyer design is comfortable enough for long sessions for average sized heads and ears.

amicusterraeOkay, thanks for the input. Do you have a DAC/AMP recommendation? I'll be waiting for the DT 990 to go on sale first I think.

Erak606I've been using the Objective 2 amp (built by Mayflower Electronics) for several years and am satisfied with it (there's a DAC combo option). I tried a fancier audiophile amp from Austria last year. I loved the size and heft of it, and the feel of the volume dial, but it and had too much gain. I was listening at min volume (with different AKG k712 prop headphones), and some songs were still too loud for me. If I was going to buy another amp now, I'd probably try one of the solid states from Schiit. My only knock on the Objective is it's light and feels very low end. It performs great however, and that's what really counts.

Erak606NFB-11 from Audio-gd is one of the best deals in Audio I have found. Very high end quality dac/amp combo unit for the price. I moved to the NFB-11 from my 02/0dac rev b unit and have not looked back.

Erak606Here's what I run with, and I love my DT 880 in the set-up:
PC -> Schiit Stack [Eitr -> Modi 2 MB -> Vali 2 [or Magni 3] -> DT 880 [not Pro version, but mine is still 250 ohm]
