How big was last drop?
The cable broke within a few months for me too. I sent mine to the US to get re-cabled. Been superb ever since.
I've owned these cans for 8 months now and I really love them more every day. Maybe it's Stockholm syndrome, but the Beyer sound has always just clicked with my ears. I've preferred these over the HD800s, Fostex TH900s, and Edition 8s. Blasphemy, I know, but perfect for my use which is a mix of at home, at work, and on the subway. The only other phones I've heard that I liked more were the T1s, but not practical for my setup.
I did have some cable problems with my T5Ps as well. The 3 foot Neutrik cable was just poorly designed and it started fading in and out. However, Beyerdynamic did replace my cable and they have since updated the cable design so it doesn't break as easily. Since then, zero problems and tons of enjoyment. I'm tempted to get a second pair as a gift to my better half.
The Beyer T5p was the second worst experience I've had buying headphones. The JH Audio Roxannes are the clear cut winners to worst company / product I've ever purchased but the T5p was a mediocre set of headphones with a badly engineered carrying case that forced me to get them repaired.

+1 to carrying case, but I really like my pair of T5p's :)
Oo interesting to hear about Roxannes, where they the custom ones or universal ones?
Waiting for https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1979931063/deloop-the-evolution-of-the-headphone-bag to come out to replace the soft pouch.

I also ordered 2 deloops, one audiophile version for myself and one sports version for my friend (who wants a case for his grados since the pizza box doesn't really work :P) And it was the universal roxanne. Pre-ordered it in mid Jan and they were set to ship end of Janurary. Next thing I know it gets pushed back one month, then another month. I only end up getting them end of March / early April. As soon as I open them I notice cosmetic defects in the right earpiece in the carbon fiber weave. Not the most noticeable thing but a quick look over showed it very clearly. I put them on and they sounded really off. Just overall mediocre and a hard fit for my small ears (but still got a seal). I noticed the left side was muffled / odd sounding but thought maybe I was adjusting to properly placing these in my ears. I see audiophile friend #1 and he plays around with them and gives me a bunch of tips including some double flange which opened up the sound a lot, gave me a great seal but still had that weird sound in the left side. He puts them on and instantly mentions he hears something wrong with the left side but I dismissed it as probably a fit issue. I see audiophile friend #2 and instantly tells me the left ear is defective, most likely a blocked tube or something. I listen carefully and yup, that's what I was hearing, just muffled mids making the sound from the left sound weird. I spent a couple weeks emailing them with no response. I call the phone number on their site to find out it's disconnected. I call the repairs center which give me the correct phone number and I call, ask for Andy (the VP) and he tells me he's going to make this right by sending me a pair of universals that he would QC himself. I send him my address by email and he tells me he'll ship them out the next day. Month later with no replacement, I call up JH again and get Angie who handles customer support. She tells me Andy went to China and won't be back for at least a week. He also never shipped anything out to my address nor had he left any notes saying to send me a replacement. She tells me to cc her into an email to Andy so she can remind him when he gets back. I do that and he actually sends me a replacement. I found out then that the right earpiece of the original set I had was also defective, but to a lesser degree than the left earpiece. The replacement left earpiece has a more clear tint, sounds more clear, etc but now there's a channel imbalance. Fantastic quality control. Love it.
With Beyer I had bought the T5p and the way the felt case is shaped, it destroyed the part of the cables entering the cups in 2 months. By the third month no matter what I tried I couldn't get any sound from the left side so I called them up and they said they'll handle it. I still had to pay to get it shipped ($50) and it took them a month to fix it because they had to get the parts from Germany or something (well, they are a german company but it's a question of resoldering the cable. I have a hard time believing they didn't have a spare headphone cable around or something). They didn't charge me for the repair (3 month old pair of $1000 headphones broken because of a shortsighted case design which was changed during production from the aluminum case to the felt case) but I was still pissed.
Those are the only times I've ever had defects / problems in higher end headphones and I've owned a lot including HD800s that were several years old, some older Stax and other cheaper to more expensive sets.
Awful experience with both companies though at least Beyer didn't avoid me. I also didn't very much enjoy Beyers. I've tried them on lots of amp and dac combos (and not just the T5p, but other models including the T1) and I always felt that the sounded a bit dry / electronic. Meh, guess that's preference for you.

Use should totally get your friends to buy this. If you really don't want it just sell it new for more on ebay or something :)
Not my favorite phones, sorry.
Next, let's do a drop. For a car.
$900 for portable headphones. Wow. I'd be so sad if I dropped these on the go.
Can someone please explain why we vote/request such expensive drops? I don't know a single person who would buy these. You'd think the people investing in headphones at this price range wouldn't really care too much for a discount. I know you audiophiles out there are probably going to disagree...but for each extra dollar you spend towards that $1300 is it really worth it compared to a pair that is listed at $500?

There are plenty of people who spend that kind of money on headphones. The audiophile community is rather large.

Yup, it's worth it, especially given the state of the secondary market. People regularly sell their used T5p's via Head-Fi classifieds for more than the maxdrop price.
Bringing the price down by a couple hundred bucks gives people the opportunity to scrape together some money and stretch their budget a level from high-mid to top tier.

I've owned the hd800, he6, sr007mk2, lcd2r1 and esw11ltd as my higher end headphones. My friend owned the ed8 and I was able to demo it on several occasions. The t5p just didn't sound natural at all. With or without amping. It didn't make me feel like I was listening to music. Furthermore that felt case they include with the headphones will break the cable after a fee months if you use it to store your headphones every day. The cables that enter the cup get crushed at the bottom of the case and will break. It's a shame they couldn't include removable cables at this price when it's known that portable headphones break 90% of the time or more in the cable.
Meanwhile the esw11ltd at about half the msrp sounded natural, deep. It was lighter, more portable, aesthetically looked nicer IMO.
The problem is beyer and ultrasone think they can get away with passing off mid-fi level headphones as premium on the go headphones.
If you want either the t5p or ed8 go to headfi and buy them used. There are lots of people selling them for lower than this drop and there's a reason for that: disappointment.

Not out yet (or at least I havent seen it but could be promising)
Slipped my mind. Yes the Sig pros sound better and are cheaper than the t5p and ed8. Depending on your preferences it could be a strong contender.
I haven't tried it myself, but from all the impressions I've read from head fi, it's T1 price without the T1 sound quality.

Is it because it's getting compared to headphones in different categories? From what i read it gets compared to the highest end (summit fi as head-fi puts it) headphones which is okay, but those headphones are not meant to be for portable, instead there meant to be used with a hifi system at home.
I mean sound is on opinion, but from what i can tell there is little to no options in the same category. what other headphones are closed back design (isolate well and don't leak), full sized over the ear headphone, can be driven from portable media devices such as ipods, hm 901, astell and kern etcetera, scale well when plugged into a hifi systems and offer as much/more detail then the T5P?
From what i looked up the only other option is Ultrasone Edition 8, which has much more mixed reviews then this headphone but there are some that prefer that sound signature .... and then there is the price which is more then the t5p.
I mean there is mid range options like sennhesier momentum (if your ears aren't big), nad viso hp 50, V-Moda Crossfade M-100, Sony MDR-1R, Denon AH-D5000, Logitech UE6000, Shure SRH840 etcetera but unless that is what you are looking for it doesn't fit the above category.
To me it's like comparing ak120 to hm901. Do you want something portable (with the comfort over full size over the ear headphones) with little to carry around with you (t5P + player and maybe portable amp) or something bigger with better sound (meaning if you really wanted portable hifi audio carry around an amp to drive your 600 ohm headphones and some sennheiser hd 800)
I owned the T5p and in my opinion it's the lousiest high end headphone I've ever tried. They can also be found used for $650.
GL1TCH3D
What headphones do you use now instead of T5P?
GL1TCH3D
Why?
Jeez, why does the good stuff always drop when I'm skint?
Thank you massdrop :)
I have to say I thought MD was BS'ing me with the bass drum during the first 5 seconds of Back in Black. When I listened with my LCD-2's the kick was there I couldn't believe my HE-400's missed that detail of the music. The things youll hear in songs with a premo headphone like this are VERY cool.
WOW I wish I could grab these!!!
