AceofTunesis your $50 tent less than 3 pound as well? Could you fit that into your backpack and carry it comfortably for days of backpacking as well?
This is a slick deal. I just paid $200 for a REI quaterdome 1 and I want to return that and get this instead.
AceofTunes@AceofTunes - that's a good question, and the same one I would have had a few years ago when I started to get into backpacking. Now that I've "found the light", I am a much happier camper!
The Big Sky tent is superior to your $50 due to:
- quality of design, fabrics and manufacturing process
- durability and warranty
- innovation
- designed and engineered in the US, manufactured in South Korea
- incredible light weight
and finally, the fact that the owner of Big Sky is posting in these forums too!
I've noticed that the owners of UL companies really care and take the time to ensure consistent positive customer interactions. Whens the last time you read a post from the owner of Coleman, Wal-mart or any tent maker at REI?
scopeBecause I am always browsing Massdrop (I suck with money) and I enjoy looking at different options. Looking at upgrading my gear etc. So I was wondering if there was something that I was missing. Maybe the material was better quality. Maybe these tents shrug off bears. I dunno. It was a question, not an insult. :-)
PatCThank you! Your answer has been the most helpful. Most people seem to have taken my question as an insult to the product and not a genuine question. The weight is about the same. The rest I have no way to compare. But an active company is the real key! You are right, my tent maker wouldn't be available on forums to answer questions. :-P
Thanks again!
AceofTunesWhat tent do you have the weighs under 3lbs, is double walled, has the same internal area as this and costs $50? Please provide a link or make and model number. If it does weigh the same, you will be incredibly popular on a lot of the backpacking forums, because even they think that this was a bargain at $200.
You just said something like "how is this better than my $50 tent?". I think you got the answers that you question warranted given the lack of information you provided.
myicicleMaybe, but I just sold a ultralight sierra designs tent for $200 on eBay to fund this purchase. Unless he was extremely lucky and the seller didn't have a clue, I doubt that he could get a good tent for that. Second hand ultralight stuff retains most of its value because people still want it. I kind of think he is just trolling or the tent that he says is "about this weight" is actually 5lbs. This was an incredible deal so I don't really care either way.
