I love my set of the Black Forge cutlery! Yes, they do develop rust spots and patina if they are not taken care of, but hand wash and dry, and they are fine. I just wish I could buy a few more sets. If anybody is interested in selling their sets, please contact me. Thanks!

Absolutely LOVE the design and feel, just so unique and beautiful. The tablespoons do need to be bigger though. I also find that you have to dry them immediately after washing otherwise the black textured surface will develop rust.

We picked this up the last time it was offerred and it arrived last week. While we love the set and don't regret it a bit, there are few things to note.
1) While it should be obvious from the pictures, we somehow missed that it only comes with one fork size, not two like many flatware sets. 2) The spoons have fairly small heads. The smaller one is darn tiny, and the larger one is about what I'd consider "normal" size.
That said, we still love it. It's a beautiful rugged looking and heavyweight set. We look forward to many years of use from it.
@Kavik , no rust on ours.

WatterThanks Watter 👍 Yeah, i really wish there were 2 forks, that's a pretty standard thing in most sets
Separate sets of forks can be purchased from their site, if you really want to round out the set

Would love to hear from a few more people who got in on the last drop, if any happen to be reading these comments? I don't recall how many sold last time, but so far 3 have reported issues with rust.....any other current owners want to report that theirs HAVEN'T rusted?

Hi, To be honest, in the almost 2 years that I've owned these now, I've not used them very much. The rust is part of the issue, though I can confirm it only ever happens on the black part of the handles, mainly on the laser engraved logo and near the transition between the black and the stainless. Never had any rust issues on the polished surfaces. My bigger issue with them has been the ergonomics. The slants cut in the end of the handles are quite sharp, if you hold it in any way that presses the end into your palm. And while the curve of the handle feels quite comfortable in some positions, it can make for a somewhat awkward angle when bringing the food to your mouth. Lastly, the shape of the heads of the spoons feels very awkward in the mouth, in my opinion. I still LOVE the looks, and maybe some day I'll get around to grinding down the sharp ends and giving them another try....but unfortunately, for now, they just look pretty in the drawer, and are only used on the rare occasion

This set looks gorgeous but with the rust issues some have mentioned...I'm wondering if the maintenance required to keep them rust-free makes them not even worth it. From comments it seems like an extremely thorough hand dry is needed and routine waxing or acidic cleanser. That seems like a lot of effort.

gumballsAgain, this is just a guess, but I'm thinking that after a couple rust cycles you would have a patina that would hinder active rust from that point on.
I know it's a personal call, but I wouldn't consider thorough drying and occasional polishing that much effort myself.
Not that it helps anyone at this point, but I think I'm gonna go ahead and give these a chance myself, and see if I can't see what's going on and what's needed to keep these happy and useable

These have to be hand washed and dried! THEY RUST! I saw a thread about waxing them with carnival wax. Tried that. Didn’t help. Water cannot be left to dry on these things.

From the Black Forge website:
Dishwasher Safe but only if Dishwasher which NOT contains Chlorine and Lemon ,It is not safe for the forged Handle ONLY of these flateware,)RECOMMENDED HAND WASH WITH SOAP AND LET THEN DRY OR CLEAN WITH SOFT CLOTH.
So so I guess that’s what I will have to do.

Larold24Interesting find, I hadn't spotted that before! And considering almost all public tap water contains some level of chlorine.....😟
@kyleemj or @mark m or whoever, can we get this updated in the product page to help clear up some of the concerns here?

Has anyone else had a issue with their silverware rusting?? I washed mine and dried them by hand and the next morning they had rust on them. I wonder what they would have looked like if I put them in the dishwasher. I am not happy at all.

Nothing aggressive was used. Dawn dish soap, cotton dishcloth, towel dried and put away in drawer. Even if I used scotch-brite pads, stainless steel would not rust. the scratchy marks you see were there out of the box, the "scratch" marks are not as bad as they look in the photo

memaherThanks for the response. Without having any in hand to compare, I didn't know how polished the finish was on these to start, so just thought I'd check
Not to argue, but using anything that scratches the surface on stainless can cause rust if it removes the chromium layer on the surface, if it isn't perfectly dry and the iron has time to react before the new layer of chromium oxide forms (Google what makes stainless steel stainless, it's interesting how it works)
Regarding why I believe it rusted on the handles and not the polished surface, scroll to my conversion with @larold24 for my thoughts

Well, shit 😣 Missed an email from MD, just noticed this was moved to my canceled transactions for a payment issue.....guess I don't get any flatware due to technical difficulties, because there's no way it was a problem with the funds through my PayPal payment method.
This is the second or third time that's happened (but the first time I didn't notice it in time to fix it)
Anyone else have this issue with payments not going through to MD? I don't even see an attempt was made in my PayPal or the account it draws from when this happens

I didn't end up buying them, so I can't speak from personal experience.... But what I can say, based on the pics others submitted, is that I'm not totally surprised by this
Stainless steel becomes stainless when the chromium in the metal oxidizes on the surface, forming a barrier between the iron and air/water. When you have a piece like this, where the black scale is intentionally left on, it can absolutely rust around those areas if not properly cared for, as there's no clean metal surface for the chromium to coat.
Of the provided pics, I didn't see any where the rust occurred randomly on the polished surfaces.
Clean them up with a non abrasive scouring pad (NOT steel wool) and some barkeeper's friend (or other citric acid based cleaner), and it should be fine. Then dry more thoroughly in the future, barkeeper's friend again as needed, and eventually it should stabilize

KavikI will try that. I have not heard of Renaissance Wax but will check it out. Thanks. Don’t know chemis very well...only know that after either dishwasher or hand washing I see oxidation. Otherwise I like this set. Thanks.

"Looks" are for women, sports cars and artwork; flatware has to serve a function. Nothing worse than the feel of sharp metal poking you in the palm as you try to plough your way through a big plate of Spam, sausage Spam, Spam, bacon Spam, tomato and Spam. These things look like they'd be tougher on you than the sausage!
