When will this drop be available? Let's go!!! :)
Paige is right!
More Black hats stocked in all sizes!!! Go get them Mr StringBender :)
We pulled most of what we had finished on the shop wall to add to the drop. We've also added a handful more Espresso colored beanies. Just a beautiful deep tone adding just the right amount of accent to an otherwise deep toned hat.

Is this breathable? I imagine with sleeping bag-style material that it might get pretty sweaty and damp underneath this.
sMACk
High grade Goose Down is extremely breathable. You'd be surprised how much moisture down can transfer along with the wicking headband material sewn into each beanie. The birds really do know how to insulate themselves! Then for the shell and liner material used in most of our gear it's very breathable yet moisture repellent. This particular run uses a Diamond Weave nylon coated in DWR.
The temperature range for the hat is also really wide. It's still comfortable to wear up into the low 50's yet toasty warm easily into the 30's. Next time you've got one of your down sweaters on think about how comfy it is for such a wide temperature range. Half of the winters here in Seattle I spend in a T-shirt with my Montbell down sweater at the ready and not much beyond that.
We've had our hats specifically travel on hikers up and down both the PCT and AT putting hundreds of miles in them. Many customers have more than one BRG hat. We make Siliconized versions, Synthetic models and others that have used nothing but the ultra softest 10 denier nylons with barely a DWR coating to it. When a hat went up Everest I made one using a 30d siliconized shell and 10d liner with heavier stuff. That was sick. They've all been wonderful hats in my opinion ;) As for the current HyperD material in this run of our hats I feel it's the right lightness with the best durability. I also really like the weave pattern and think it makes for a striking piece.
Hi Everyone - thanks for your interest in this drop! BlackRock Gear was able to allocate a few more units in select styles. Hope this allows a few more of you to snag this awesome hat!
I got one of these hats for Christmas last year. It is a great hat. I took a walk everyday while at work and was always warm. I live in Minnesota. Also it makes a very good bed cap while fall and winter camping. Yes it looks interesting, yet only weighs an ounce. I keep it in my jacket and would typically have double check to see if its still there.
Cast_Iron_Kid
A great gift for sure!
We may be a bit biased around here, but we love the look for sure. I wear one of my Original Originals still to this day and constantly get people asking if I've got a down hat. Less than an ounce for so much warmth and it blends well with so much of my gear. The pics never do the hat justice but on your head it's like a light cloud of fluffy warmth :)
I'm seeing what we have for stock to see if I can't get more added to the drop. So if anyone was hoping to get in on it check back soon for updates.
How green is the foliage grey? Are the photos pretty accurate? It looks like a foliage green in the photos here and on the Black Rock Gear website.
Wright
My images of the Foliage Grey give it more of a yellow/green tint than it really has. It's not the flattest grey we've had but it's not very green. It's got just a bit of sheen to it and the diamond weave is a nice accent. I think if you were looking for a grey color this would fit the bill. It's a nice grey that's fairly balanced in color and will blend nicely with most other pieces.
BlackRock
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the Large Grey is now sold out...
Black L and XL gone. :(

I just received my hat in the mail. The Large is too small....the band is a little tight. Can I exchange it for an XL?
StringBender
Received the XL - fits great. For others, the sizing charts is pretty accurate, but if your head size is in the top half of the size range, it will be snug (but not uncomfortably so). I prefer a light feel on the head band/fit to compliment the exceptionally light feel of the hat itself, so I sized up. Keep in mind, this was a sample size of 1 large and 1 XL, so YRMV.
I'm just a hair under 22.5" , will the Large size fit too loose?

Thank you for adding more Black, I ordered a L. :)
Winia
You are welcome!
Too bad there's no Moroccan Blue!

Jblaser - The drop prices are what they are but if you follow either our emails or Instagram we post up a good number of deals throughout the year. I don't have any sales on the books right now though. The MassDrop sale here is the only deal we've got going right now aside from a discount on Woolies.
BlackRock
Thanks very much for your reply. I really like the blue and did sign-up for the emails, so I might just wait for a sale. I am going to sleep on it tonight.
Shame there is no Deep Purple
insomb
Insomb,
Sorry we couldn't get any Deep Purple into the drop. We just didn't have enough to stock it. I do have a handful of Deep Purple in each size on our site.
What is the price for one of these and do you ship to the UK?

You are very far from us for sure. 13,000 km from the looks of it!

Love your work BlackRock Gear
Wondering if they come in Orange for camping at Mar a Lago?
RayF
We just launched a bunch of new colors last week during the drop, one of which is a super sick "Burnt Orange". The name doesn't exactly describe the color though as it's almost a pastel or creamy orange that is just awesome. We've sold out all but a single medium but I'm planning on getting more fabric in that color since I've got a queue of people wanting more in Large.
BlackRock
Good to know!
Only white left in L size. Bummer.
I have one for my sleeping system - they are freaking warm. Do not, under any circumstances, misplace it. It packs up so small you will never find it again.
Somewhere in my house is an Outdoor Research down beanie....
wily-quixote
Somewhere in my shop is an OR beanie too, dissected years ago after my "buddy" who worked for OR pushed them to make one. Didn't live up to the hype ;)
As for losing them... Yes. I once lost my Original Original for about a year then found I'd stuffed it in the little zipper pocked that held my head bug net right on my sleeping bag... Oops.
I'm sorry but am I the only one that think these hats are quite ugly? It's a puffy jacket on your head

Good point Plus it looks warm and comfy, function > form for outdoors gear
seschimeres
My boyfriend won't even consider a puffy jacket, yet we live in Minnesota and are outside for over an hour at a time. He thinks they are just too hideous to wear, even though he is not into style/fashion whatsoever.
You can tell he never goes backpacking ;-) I think that'd change his tune real quick.
My head measures exactly 221/4 inches (56.5 cm). Right in between the medium and the large. Which would you recommend?

I went with the XL size as it would best fit my head, but the banding on the inside of the hat isn't eastic and it rides a bit to large. Being a tab big, I'm not getting headaches from being too tight. If I got another one, I'd still get the XL again. I hope this helps.
Thanks for the help dydxdx. I was out of town for vacation last week and couldn't get logged in during the drop.
As with all our gear if something doesn't work for you just shoot us an email. We are always keen to help out anyway we can.
I picked up one of these several years ago for backpacking sleep gear. I'm not sure if it was 950fp at that time, but nonetheless it has become an indispensable piece of kit.
Add more black please :)
midnightwalker
Sorry Midnightwalker. I added every single Black Hat in our new HyperD material that I could. We just got the material in and I only had 25 or so to spare for this particular drop. I'm sure we will do another if you guys request in and get one in some different colors.
Fantastic, light weight and packable. I totally love mine
Damn... went to grab a black in large and they're sold out. Wish the blue was also available, looks nice. Maybe next time.

I am also looking for a large and medium black

The new Moroccan Blue is so cool. We love it here in the shop. We are sold out there too though as they flew off the shelves last week. I'll have more MoBlue in stock on our site by probably next week. Probably won't see that color in a drop very soon though, maybe Fall if we can get enough made up to push out for a deal.
Can someone verify this drop is for the current 2018 'Original' beanie with 20d HyperD ripstop nylon? The Drop description only lists the Black Color beanie as being HyperD ripstop, and the pictures do not show newer diamond weave fabric, but instead appear to be perhaps earlier models/other fabrics, so confusion ensues..
See attached picture from BlackRock website of current 2018 model 'Original BlackRock hat with this HyperD fabric.

The earlier model is on clearance with free shipping from BlackRock direct @$60, FYI, and looks like the pictures shown in this drop so wondering if this drop is actually for the outdated/clearance hats? Thanks!

I was waiting for clarification on this and now black is sold out. Oh well, maybe next time.
RVinSC
Sorry I missed the comment RVinSC.
Yes, the limited number of Black hats in this drop was for that exact hat and material. The HyperD is such a cool weave with the diamond ripstop. It's got a beautiful sheen and just looks really nice and techie too.
I have a big melon, would XL be ok?
Taeguron
They have a size chart given in inches for each size hat.,,. so measure your head and then pick the size that matches,... far better then trying to judge by "big melon" , that is a rather subjective measurement.
My wife discovered my hat soon after it arrived. I am now waiting for the next drop so I can have a hat.
thewoodrow
I hear you. it pays to buy them in pairs....
Got my Northern Lights – Aurora Red, Fit eggsactly as expected! Weighed 2g less than advertised. Could not be happier!
Love this hat. Next time I'll order an XL. This one is just at the edge of fitting properly. Excellently handled drop btw.
Get those order in guys! We are planning to ship Friday and get ALL the orders out in time for Christmas. First time ever doing a drop during our busiest time of the season so grab a good deal and have a warm head for the holidays.
Lots of colors up for grabs too. Black, Blue, Green, Red and White! We call it "Snow Camo"...
BlackRock
just going to miss you guys, my payday and your drop have misaligned...bummer. i'll take mine late for Christmas if you post up again next week. thanks for doing this regardless.
This may be a silly question but fit is important. I just measured this noggin of mine and i get 24.5 inches with the cloth tape snug, but i also desperately need a haircut, i'm a bit shaggy right now. Evan or anybody else... Large or XL? i intend to use it mainly around camp at high elevations or while sleeping in my quilt. thanks!

Thanks! I missed the end of the drop, but i may eventually just order direct. Thanks!
theatomicfly
I missed the end too! Second time in a row in have missed it... Massdrop really needs a text alert option, for people not glued to the internet.
I bit on this to experiment with when I head back to the Whites (and maybe Maine as well) next year to help a buddy on the AT. Any chance of adding a top quilt to the catalogue? I need to update mine to something a bit warmer. 20F would be my preference, but I think anything 15-25F would work for me. I'm using a 40F now and it got a little cold in Maine (despite having a 20F under-quilt, a top cover, & low slung rainfly with doors to keep out wind) in mid-Oct. when I was finishing up my thru-hike a couple of years ago. If something like that is in the works and this beanie is as good as advertised I'd entertain a TQ from BRG instead of a HG Burrow 20F to match my UQ...using a similarly lightweight fabric (like Argon 67) the 950fp down should be a noticeable amount lighter than HGs comparable quilt.
P.S.: How hard is it gonna be to cut off that "signature"?...you gotta know half the folks buying these are cutting off that dead-weight? That's an extra peanut I can carry for a snack! I jest, but yeah, it's absolutely getting cut off post-haste.

Wow, that is a really impressive design. Hopefully some other folks might chime in and permit a drop on one of these. That way you could have a guaranteed sales base to make a run of them and at least test the waters to see if it would be worth full production. I think the fill weight/warmth rating was the problem with previous sales, as I think most folks in the hiking/backpacking category want at least a 30F quilt (along with a minimum size about the same as the later version), which would bump the price a bit, but almost certainly increase the market as well.
I would pay $250 @BlackRock for one to keep the wife warm. Ordering one of these now for her....warm wife means more camping and snowboarding, and fun after. :)
Does 950fp down exist in the real world?
dkjnvldjrvnldrgz
Absolutely.
With years and years now of buying and handling the high end goose down I can say that the current batch of what we've got is top notch. I believe the test on the current bag shows a 970 in fact. What that means for the consumer is the gear you get from us is just that much lighter, softer and fluffier because of the extremely nice large fluffy plumes that makes up the entirety of our down. It also means it holds up better to moisture and will last longer over the years. What it means by the numbers and testing is much harder to explain.
So here goes...
Most cheap down products you get from say a big box shop on discount will be around 600 fill. Packed full of down and feathers to give it loft but it's heavy and much more dense because of it. Then you get to your top tier products like Pattagucci and such and they toss in 800, 850 and maybe even some 900. Heck from time to time you'll even see the 'elusive' 1000 fill power, which does also exist. If you were to cut the item open with better quality down you'd find fewer feathers, just tiny ones with lots of plumes and lots of small fuzzies. As you move through the range from say 800 up you get fewer feathers and the plumes get puffier and larger. It's really just a matter of filtering out the small plumes, partial plumes, tiny feathers and other random bits to get a higher number.
It's only when you really start looking at the 900 loft and up that you start to lose most of the tiny feathers. So we went to 900 about 7 years ago despite the cost being nearly double vs 800 fill. The stringy plumes are fewer and the size of the fluffy plumes gets bigger overall. Now compare the 900 to the bags of 950 I exclusively source now and you'll find absolutely no feathers. Stringy plumes are gone and almost everything inside the entire 10lb bags we buy is nothing but gigantic huge fluffy plumes.
A few years ago we got some crappy "900 fill" bags of down, which I sent back. We then worked with the distributor to get something we actually wanted to work with and in the end it turned out the only down I personally liked and felt passed my litmus test was the stuff that tested out to 950 at a base level. I'm always asking for 1000 but only very rarely do they get enough down that's so super nice they can then process it and end up with something testing out that high.
So yes, 950 does exist. Take a handful of down from your 850 fp jacket and then sort out ONLY the largest fluffiest plumes. Set those in a new pile and I'd say that would be a good representation of what 950 is ;)
Someone recently asked "What is the BlackRock Hat" so I thought I'd give some history and add to what's already posted. Sometimes I forget not everyone has been introduced yet ;)
The BRG hat is a simple beanie. Snug with a deep fit. Sewn to size these 'fit' beanies are as light as a feather. Each one is handmade out of my shop here in Seattle Washington. They are filled with the highest quality down I can source. Right now each one has some beautiful 950 fill white goose down. This last batch has been particularly nice.

Over the years we've tried to keep it simple. Include a hat, sticker and hang tag with each hat. Minimal packaging and as small a footprint as possible. Our hang tags are made with 100% post consumer recycle paper and printed with a soy based ink. The string is handspun hemp and the brass safety pin is even USA made. We take a lot of pride and care into each BRG hat shipped out whether individually or in bulk through MassDrop.
search
Propped open you can see the hats loft is similar to what most call a 'down sweater'. But this down beanie is for your noggin giving you a huge temp range to be comfortable in. From the 20's to the 40's this hat excels as a singe go to layer.
The lower baffle is used to form the headband made from a Dryline material. Similar to lycra's used in high end running clothes it's been coated with a silver ion to impede odor. So over a season your gear stays fresh.
search
A closer view of baffling and loft. We individually fill each baffle to the 'perfect' fill level. Over the years we've experimented with super heavy and ultralight fills based on the materials used for different styles. Our Hadron from 2012 was an ultralight 7d material while current hats showcase a 10d for added durability. The hats have really landed on what we think is just the right amount in both fill and material.
search
Another shot looking into a BRG hat. Simple minimal construction form a hat made almost purely from goose down. Most size medium hats weigh in only around 22 grams.

Each piece gets a 'Signature' from us in the form of a tag. We've got to sign and promote ourselves some how, right? :)

Every time I hear your brand mentioned, all I can think of is World of Warcraft. Has anyone ever told you that before?
Cardamomtea
Hahaha. Nope. Most people think "Burning Man" and BlackRock City when they hear BlackRock Gear. :)
