I can't believe Spydergreed is charging $75 for a Delica. FRN and VG-10. Not worth it when you see what you get for less from other makers.

BoxBladeSeveral big box stores sell the Delica for 90-100. What else do you like at $75?

Steve737Yeah....except we're all here because we know how to shop prices online lol Not much sense in comparing a drop to brick and mortar retail store pricing
The deal is okay if you get an upgrade and enjoy a gamble, but not really worth it if you end up with the base. I'm still debating how much I enjoy a gamble haha

KavikI enjoy a gamble myself but a couple of the options are not desirable for me. I'd prefer the base over the combo blade or the wave. Good luck to everyone that decides to join but I'm going to sit this one out.

KavikIf I ended up with a Wave or that black blade combo edge I would seriously regret the decision to join. I'm new to Massdrop but this blue box deal has no appeal for me.

Steve737I think i could live with the wave (from what I understand you can still pull it out without deploying if you try), but would be annoyed by the black combo blade as well Bet there will be a bunch of those on ebay after the drop ships if anyone wants one lol

Raine342- My first knife was a Delica and I agree it is a classic knife. However several Chinese brands have come into the market that offer way more value Bestech has a budget line where you get 3D milled G-10, bearings and D2 steel for $52 . You can also get Real Steel and Ruike's in Sandvik steel with G-10 and bearings at $52 and $35. The RAT-1 and @ have gone to D2 and are much cheaper. Seems like Spyderco is oblivious to the competition and just did large price hikes.

Steve737I like Bestech, Ruike and Real Steel with better materials, ( 3D milled G-10, bearings, Sandvik or D2 and they come in for way less. The RAT 1 and 2 in D2 also come to mind. The price hikes of Spyderco just aren't justified. Tha Shaman was a hit so the raised the price 22% for 2018. Just greedy.

BoxBladeFair enough. I bought a Chinese knife called the Gnome which was pretty good for the price. I don't have any experience with the brands you mentioned, but I'll take a look. Thanks.

Steve737Steve- great value knives. I'm not hating on Spyderco. I want the US companies to prevail. They just seem oblivious to the threat that these Chinese companies are to them. The Chinese are making some phenomenal knives and they seem to bend over backwards to add value. I feel Spyderco and Benchmade always cut corners to maximize profits. They need to wake-up or they will lose out.

Raine - I hear you, but the Bestech, Real Steel and Ruike are using D2 or Sandvik. I am not hating on Spyderco, but am warning them that they need to up their game vs. these Chinese brands. The Chinese are offering way more bang for the buck and aren't pinned. You can open and maintain these brands. I feel that Spyderco's price increases are unjustified. They are beyond the rate of inflation and are pushing people to the Chinese brands. I feel they are resting on their laurels.

Sorry to Raine on your parade, but Bestech, Real Steel and Ruike make very high quality knives. Look at the reviews on YouTube. I'm not talking about Chinese Spyderco's, but other brands. You views on quality were valid just a few year ago, but are now outdated. These new brands are excellent and offer great value. I'd take any of these brands over a Delica in a heartbeat. I have owned them all and they blow the Delica out of the water in quality and value. They are also serviceable. Have you ever handled the brands I have mentioned? If not, you need to to catch up. The knife world is changing quickly and dramatically.

Raine- Bestech and WE were OEM's for years and mastered their craft. Then they emerged with their own branding. So you are kind of making my point. They aren't inexperienced makers of junk. Have you handled any of these knives. If you haven't, you are arguing from a point of not enough information. Beside the budget brands, there is Reate, Kizer, WE and Rike. They make great knives, out of great materials and don't charge nearly as much as Spyderco. Now if you go on AliExpress or DHGate, you can find some junk, but the brands I'm talking about meet and many times beat the quality of Spyderco. Have you handled the brands I' talking about? And again check out all the videos on YouTube that back my point of view. Don't just be a fanboy. Do the research.

Raine- I'm not being a fanboy of Chinese brands. I'm just saying they are making quality knives. I never said anything about sales numbers. How does Spyderco cut corners? I'll give you and example. The Nirvana came out at well over $400. It had a torx screw as a pivot (really?). It had no lockbar insert and suffered from lockstick. The pocket clip was an off the shelf stainless steel pocket clip painted the color of the knife (no titanium milled clip at that price?). The Orobouros had nylon washers at $167. The Sliverax was a total fail on the detent. You mocked the Rat models as having plastic scales. What the hell is FRN? Plastic. Give me an example of a Chinese knife you have handled and how it was cheaply made? Also justify to me how the Shaman's price was raised 22% in 2018. Just G-10 and S30v. Hardly top of the line materials at $182. Give me an example of a Real Steel or Bestech that was poorly made. Have you handled one? You said you have handled something, but you didn't say what.

If i may interject here, it seems like you're missing a couple points.... I believe what BoxBlade is saying is that the less expensive Chinese brands he mentioned are comparable in quality to the Japanese "high end" Spydercos, and that he obviously wasn't comparing spyderco to the low end, no-name, knock-off, dime store, made in China crap. If you really want to compare the brands he mentioned to the lower end Chinese made Spydercos to get a more equal comparison...then it looks even better for the other brands.
I'm not a huge collector compared to most, but at this point I do own knives from Spyderco, WE, Rike, Bestech and Kizer (to list the ones that have been called out here). I have no major complaints about the build quality of any of them. And any on the minor complaints i have had about the Chinese ones are nothing you couldn't also find in the odd spyderco.
To give examples of value in the ones I own myself so far: My spyderco yojimbo 2 went for right around $130 shipped here at MD. That's an S30V blade with G10 scales. I've bought 4 other knives from 3 of the other brands listed that all came in S35VN and full titanium handles for under that price. S30V and S35VN might be fairly comparable in price, but should titanium come out cheaper than G10?
Now, I haven't received this one yet so I can't speak to its quality personally yet, but based on reviews I'm not expecting any issues... The Bestech Swordfish is a 2 tone G10 handle, with a D2 blade, that cost me less than $45 shipped here on MD. On paper, I'd say that's a no brainer that it's a better value.
No one is saying you can get "a cheaper knife for a cheaper price", they're saying you can get a comparable or better knife for a cheaper price.
Also, i don't see anyone questioning Spydercos quality, just their pricing vs the materials they decide to use, as compared to other options that are now available out there

KavikThanks Kavik, those are my points. I fear for the future of US companies if they don't recognize the competition. I want the US companies to prevail. Right now they are losing and seem oblivious to the threat.

I think I was always saying something with substance. I have the Reate Future integral and it had none of the issues I stated about the Nirvana. Again, I want to see Spyderco and Benchmade prevail. They just need to acknowledge that there is stiff competition out there and up their game.

Let's face it. You are just a fanboy. The Future blew the socks off the Nirvana. Why did Spyderco discontinue it after a year if it was so wonderful? It was overpriced and substandard in quality that is why. You talk of Benchmade designs that are a decade old or more. That is my point. No innovation.

Yeah, everyone has there own tastes on the aesthetics of a knife. The Future is just okay for me aesthetically. Not a home run. I do own a 940 Knifeworks exclusive and bought a Griptilian before the upgraded model. I couldn't stand the grivory scales so I put some custom scales on it. I put some very cool custom scales on my PM2. 3D milled with a proud spider web in black. I got a red backspacer too. I added a lanyard with a spydie bead. I call it the black widow,

I hear that 52100 is some tough steel. Those flytanium scales will be sweet. Personally, I like CF, especially when it's done well. I had a Kevin John Knife (Chinese guy who started out doing clones, but now does his own designs) and it had CF in the blade and the show side scale. Just seamless. He manufactures the parts for CKF. Some even say he is actually making their knives. Enjoy that PM2.
