After 4 completely different weight and dimension changes, the package was delivered this morning as 9x7x3 ~.5lbs. I recieved the “upgraded” Black G-10 handle with S30V Blade.
This drop was both the first purchase through MD, as well as, my first foray into the “higher end” EDC category. I usually use $35-$50 knives, so regardless this is a MASSIVE step up from my Spyderco Tenacious. I doubt I’ll return/complain.
I have 2 Questions for the seasoned vets of Massdrop Blue Box Deals: 1. Is the perceived ”cluster F” of this particular deal a common thing? (Misrepresented / inconsistent information / lack of actual bonus items) 2. Description issues aside, is this particular knife (Native 5 Black G-10, S30V) still a “good value” for the price of the drop?
Any and all input welcome!

Dlo81621. Not horribly bad
2. Absolutely a decent value for the drop if you are happy with the knife you received!

Dlo8162Just to start so I you know im not stating from nothing, I have about 6 massdrop purchases so far and 1 they have replaced, so if you need customer service then I can assure you they are great, that and I have many knives from most production brands. I can tell you for one, that a spyderco s30v and s35vn is almost identical steels, aside from how easy they are to grind and sharpen. The s35vn will hold an edge a few cuts longer at most and is a bit easier to grind. The g10 s35vn native 5 is about $140 but I do not know the price of this drop when it started. Spyderco actually had to put out their own article and information about this up on their facebook page. They are switching from s35 to s30 for the new native 5 runs because they think with their heat treat and manufacturing, that it is an upgrade. One big thing to note is that heat treat is the main thing. A poorly heat treated s35vn will be worse than a vg10 blade. Yes the cluster F is a misrepresentation because most people are not aware of the switch they just did and this this is an older model.

Dlo81621. Not really that common. MD occasionally gets the descriptions and pictures wrong. If you feel like you were mislead or are otherwise unhappy, they will accept returns. You may also be able to sell it on the secondary market and break even. Lots of guys would jump on a G10 Native for $90. One of the biggest problems I have with the drops is shipping time. The few dollars I save on a typical drop isn't always worth waiting 4-6 weeks, but I'm horribly impatient.
2. The "base" model was 90 bucks here, 95 bucks on BladeHQ. Any "upgraded" model or freebies makes this a great value in my opinion. The Native 5 in any configuration is a fantastic EDC knife, as are most Spydercos. MD should seriously stop pimping the carry case as an upgrade or bonus. I prefer the option of knocking off $10 for no case, like they do with some of the other Spyderco knives.

Dlo8162MD is usually very good about making sure what they sell is what they've advertised.
1. This is not in any way indicative of the usual Massdrop experience. This is what I think happened, don't quote me if it's a little off: They did this exact blue box before, and rather than looking up the information on it, they just assumed it would be identical. Little did they know (because they didn't do proper research) that Spyderco changed the model's steel type and the liners on the G10 variety. The price of these models did not change, they kept the same MAP for the model on all the retail sites. I'm reasonably sure they simply mirrored the first drop, updated a couple of specific points, and reposted it.
2. Yes. This is an excellent value for that particular model. As I mentioned the MAP didn't change so you still paid $90 for a $150 knife. On the secondary market the price would be a bit lower based on materials, but it's not a $60 reduction on an unused knife.

Dlo8162Had one drop before (the spyderco PITS). everyone in the drop was excited for the no longer produced rare polished Ti version. Shipped, and it was the blue model. Not great as you can get this alot cheaper (though not as cheap as the drop) Luckily I was going to mod it anyway, and got $10 discount which is grand!

BigburlyI’ve found the base FRN on Amazon for $94 so paying 89.99 isn’t that great of a deal. Less than $5 from what we paid isn’t all that great IMO.

BigburlyOh gotcha, yeah then it’s a decent value. I wish that’s what I had got. Got the base though which still feels decent in the hand.

Tolfocus07Oh don’t get me wrong, this is by far and away the best knife in my rotation! I‘m guessing it’s not that easy to coordinate a drop like this, especially with such dramatic manufacturing changes from Spyderco. The most important thing now is for MD to start the damage control process and hopefully prevent a full scale mutiny with future drops.

Dlo8162Yeah I sent them an email asking why we were never updated on the change and if they’ll be doing anything about it. Still waiting for a response, but I’m sure they’re getting flooded with emails about the issue.
