$10 partial refund and I'll take it. Makes my G10 S30V a $79.99 purchase instead of $89.99! $150 knife for $80!
Thanks Massdrop!

JakeSizzleI'm still waiting for a response from Massdrop (other than the initial automated response). If they offer me a $10 refund I'm going to tell them to shove it up their asses. I collect blade with different steels. I paid for S35VN at the bare minimum and have no use for another S30V knife. If I'm not going to be receiving S35VN, Maxamet, or S110V (the steels listed on the drop), I want a full refund.
*Edit Yep, just received the email. They are offering a $10 partial refund if you keep the knife or a full refund if you return the knife. Swing and a miss Massdrop. You tried to get off as cheap as possible and now I imagine you'll have a lot of full refunds + shipping on your hands.

FixallWhile I agree this drop was a bit of a cluster, you should know that it was Spyderco that changed the blade steel on these knives.
Here's their newsletter from 3/30/18: https://mailchi.mp/spyderco/spyderco-byte-march-2018?e=428350a838 and the relevant quote:
"After exhaustive in-house performance testing and tons of end-user feedback, we have also decided to change the blade steel of the Native 5 from its current CPM S35VN™ to CPM S30V®. This rolling change will be implemented as we exhaust our current inventory of parts, so some versions of the Native 5 will complete the switch sooner than others. However, the change will ultimately affect all standard G-10 and FRN-handled versions of this popular model. "
I, too, was hoping for S35VN and I'm not saying you shouldn't be upset, but target your anger accurately. Massdrop didn't try "to get off as cheap as possible"; the manufacturer changed the product. Most of the retailers were/are in the same spot.

SinNYCI am well aware that Spyderco changed the steel from S30V to S35VN. They started that back in March. I didn't buy the knife from Spyderco. I bought the knife from Massdrop. It was Massdrop's responsibility to make sure I received what they sold me. If Spyderco sold the Native 5 to Massdrop under the belief that it would come with S35VN instead of S30V, that's between Massdrop and Spyderco.
I find it kind of hard to believe that when Massdrop put in an order through Spyderco for several hundred Native 5s in S35VN that Spyderco didn't say "Oh by the way, we switched to S30V, just want to give you a heads up." If that's the case and Spyderco didn't give Massdrop a heads up then Massdrop should be collecting damages from Spyderco.
I still don't see why I shouldn't be pissed at Massdrop.

SinNYCYes, but the change announcement from Spyderco preceeded the drop by two months, and the Overview of the drop was a paen to S35VN and it’s superiority over S30V. MD wasn’t paying attention and got caught.

FixallHay, man; be pissed at whoever you want. It's your dime.
I knew about the production switch and assumed from the start that this was an attempt to blow S35VN product out of the channel to make way for the S30V. But I don't know. Just as I don't know what happened between Spyderco and Massdrop. But until I read otherwise, I'm going on the assumption that this was not done on purpose or with malice. At this point, my only complaint with Massdrop is that they should have notified us about the issue before sending the knives out.
But they're offering a full refund so you'll get your money back, if not your time.

SinNYCThe fact Massdrop didn't notify us of the steel change before shipping is the very reason I am pissed though. You don't box up and ship several hundred knives without noticing it's the wrong product. What else am I to believe other than Massdrop thought they would make more money by shipping out the wrong product and dealing with the fallout and small amount of people who will go through the hassle of returning the knife rather than tell everyone before shipping about the steel change and dealing with the high volume of cancellations.

FixallDo you think they actually unboxed a single knife before shipment? I don't think so, as i would be pissed as a buyer if I saw a box that look pre-opened. I think this community as a whole needs to take a chill pill and enjoy a good knife, or return it and stop being butthurt about the upgrades they didn't get. Not everyone gets to have the maxamet FRN knife. Yes I got an upgrade and yes I am thankful for it. Let's move on and have ANOTHER BLUE BOX because the excitement of the unknown is way more fun than the mundane of the expected.

SinNYCWell how would you explain the cf/s90v? The hawkbill dragonfly? This was all massdrop not updating the drop page from the last time. They assumed it would all be the same then when it wasnt they stuck their heads in the sand and waited to see what the people would say. 65% of the knives had the wrong steel. That doesn't go unnoticed.

JakeSizzleFair enough since the Native 5 boxes don't have the steel listed on them, but I still find it very hard to believe that Massdrop didn't realize the knives they received were S30V before shipping them.

FixallLike I said, until proven otherwise, I consider this to be a clusterfuck of bad timing (manufacturer's steel change), lack of QC (warehouse not checking), and terrible communication.
I find it impossible to believe they did this on purpose and figured they'd just slip it past our (insanely) detail-oriented and full-tilt fetishistic knife community.

Jergen1917Dunno. I ended up with an H1 Hawkbill Dragonfly, which obviously wasn't listed as a possibility. As I noted above, in my response to Fixall, I do not believe this was done to try to sneak anything past this knife community.
