Only 102 left to purchase.
I jumped in on this and am a little uncertain on buying this. Just getting into knives. Aside from Swiss Army knives I just purchased the spyderco Delica on here and am waiting to get it. How would a knife like this compare to that (other than size)? Why are people buying this one and why is demand so high? Some of the reviews of other UT's were very good. What's better about this one? I joined simply because the knife looked unique (and if I'm honest I got sucked into the excitement of a massdrop exclusive). Sorry for the noob questions here.

VerwilderdI'll leave the comparison to the Delica to someone with more knowledge of that model. I can say that the Delica has a different steel, different opening method, and a different lock. Also, ergonomic differences and how it carries in your pocket.
People are buying this up because it's a Massdrop exclusive version, with upgraded steel and fancy handle colors. It's also the first MD exclusive in the EDC realm, so people are excited about that.

Verwilderd@Samuel_Sturm is correct. As the first exclusive knife by and for Massdrop, this is bound to become a collector's item once the 1000 units are sold (provided this exact design does not later come back for a further drop, or is not offered to the general public by Boker).
Now let's assume this is the only production run this knife will ever see. I can't say if you will be able to sell it later for a nice premium or not (provided it's in perfect condition), but scores of 'limited run' (or 'sprint run' as they're called) knives have gone way, way up in price after some time. And to a smaller extent, some sprint runs can be had for the same price as originally put on the market, or slightly higher.
At $80, it's a fun knife to have, the Urban Trapper being a very popular and critically well received design. This variation is unique to Massdrop, and it does have an upgraded steel, making it an even better value than the regular models, especially at this price point. It's said it's somewhat historic for the fact that it's a Massdrop milestone (first Massdrop exclusive knife for the EDC category).
I'm buying two, hoping someone will want to trade me for one later (trades are fun!). At $80 a pop, it's a no risk purchase!

BobrazThank you for the explanation here. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my newbie questions. This makes perfect sense and helps in justifying spending the $80. My fear was that some of the earlier postings here seem to point to this knife not being so great, so I was worried that I would be just throwing money away because of all the hoopla. I'm still fairly new to massdrop so I was unaware that this is the first time massdrop has done something like this in the edc community.
Thanks again!

Samuel_SturmThanks for responding to my newbie questions. I wasn't aware that a big part of the excitement was that this is the first time massdrop has done an exclusive knife for the edc community.

VerwilderdI am a newbie too, and my first thought was I could get the large Swiss Army Knives with many more functions for the same price. I joined the drop, and I will definitely go to knife stores and check them out. I guess I have few days to decide if I want this knife or not.

Jonathan-LeJust a heads up, the drop will end when all the knives have been puchased (only 44 left right now) so I wouldn't count on having more than a few hours to decide.

Jonathan-LeIMHO, comparing this knife to a Swiss Army Knife is apples-to-oranges. A SAK is a great thing--I carry a Cadet with me wherever I go. However, the knife blade of a SAK is much less capable than even a light locking folder like this Urban Trapper, so I generally carry both a pocketknife and the Cadet (which weighs basically nothing, unlike the larger SAKs, which get heavy quickly without a huge increase in capability). That way you get the most essential tools and a versatile knife blade, and it still doesn't have to weigh very much or be a pain to carry. Just my two cents.

VerwilderdNeither is really better or worse, but optimized differently. Urban Trapper is more for a classy light-use EDC, Delica is an all-round beater that can appeal to many different use-cases. Delica is the jack of all trades, Urban Trapper is the mechanical engineer at the office.
The main difference is probably the locking mechanism. Back lock on the Delica is more sturdy, but not as easy to operate quickly. Flipper opening on the Urban Trapper is just plain fun to actuate. Delica is heavier and larger in the pocket, but has a shorter and thicker blade. Due to the thinness of the titanium in the Urban Trapper, there is some flex in the handles which indicate that you really won't be using it for any kind of hard work. Flat grind on the Delica is more stable during cutting, hollow grind on the Urban Trapper slices really nicely.
The regular Urban Trappers use the same steel as as the Delica, but the S35VN in this exclusive is a clear improvement. Much better edge retention with similar rust resistance.

VerwilderdNo problem mate. If you're getting into knives, checkout /r/knifeclub. Plenty of good advice, good people, and good knife pr0n.
Avoid /r/knives.

pedariusAgreed completely!
In my mind, a SAK is a boy scout / girl scout / light camping knife, whereas these EDC knives are more for the enthusiast, collector, heavy users (like people cutting cardboard at their job, etc.), 'serious outdoor enthusiasts', etc.

BobrazI wouldn't be surprised if it came back, at least on Massdrop. The resale value of collectors items is not really important to the original manufacturer or the vendor unless their reputation/business model/consumer base is built around it. If these knives are well recieved there's a good chance Boker or Massdrop will want to do another production run. My hope is that they change up the drop in a way that will satisfy those that missed out, but without simply reproducing this knife. So either a different selection of upgrades or colors, or even better, another popular Boker knife like the Kwaiken with it's own upgrades.
Given the number of Massdrop exclusive headphones that have been re-dropped with different aesthetics I think unfortunately, as long as this drop stays successful, that the former option is the more likely. Certainly not a deal-breaker for me, since I wanted this UT for it's own merits and not for a trader or for profit, but there is something inexplicably attractive about uniqueness, however trivial.

MDDogeWell said! As for me I'm not after profit... Just hoping to trade it one day, for the pleasure of trading, as I find that super fun!

BobrazYeah trading seems like it'd be good fun. And with a unique knife you'd be sure to get some unique offers that might not be as readily available through vendors like Amazon or Massdrop. I'd like just seeing all of the different knives people have, the variety out there is truly stunning.

VerwilderdWelcome, I am pleased but not surprised that you got some great answers from the community. You picked a pretty cool blade to start your collection, if you do decide to go down that road. Be careful, though...I packed the car for camping last weekend and found out later that accidentally brought 8 knives just because I have them stashed in every pocket of every bag I own at this point.

JonasHeinemanHaha! I wonder if you were to tally up the cost of those 8 knives what that'd be. That's my next fear is how much I'd spend...especially if massdrop is going to keep placing $200+ knifes. I probably going to have to start jumping on them.
