Founded in 1980 in Venice, Italy, Bortoletti Fonderia Artistica makes beautiful products for people who take pleasure in reading and writing letters, and in keeping a well-stocked desk. Among them are this letter opener and magnifying glass. Both feature finely chiseled bronze with handmade pearls made of glass from Murano: a series of islands north of Venice known for their glass production. Each handle is decorated with delicate swirls and finished with a matching tassel. Add a touch of sophistication to your own desk or gift this set to a fellow scribe.
Note: At checkout, choose black, blue, gold, pearl ivory, red, or turquoise.
For the bronze portions of the letter opener and magnifying glass, Bortoletti Fonderia Artistica uses a process called lost-wax casting. This method of metal casting involves creating a mold using a wax model and then pouring molten metal into that mold. Once the mold is made, the wax model is melted and drained way. Relatively uncommon these days outside of the best jewelry workshops, lost-wax casting results in intricate pieces with a very high level of precision.
