I wanted to refrain from making a comment on this because I am of two minds on this. While I am no fan of "out sourcing" I think the situation is more complicated than some are stating. In addition I would not have my present position if I was not working for a BPO.
There are plenty of products we take for granted that are made in Asia that we have no problem with the quality such as smartphones and (as Ian eludes to) audiophile equipment. If a manufacture keeps tight control of the QC there seems to be no problem with products coming out of Asia up to standard. So I am always bewildered by off hand comments about quality.
If the objection is one of an ethical or moral stand regarding labor practices many of us (myself included) are compromised as we give in to getting smartphones etc. As Ian eludes to the Gap is well known for having issued repeated mea culpas (meae culpae?) for getting caught red handed with unethical partners in Asia. I don't know how one paints all companies with the same brush though.
I have a problem with companies using branding to imply that their products' origin is other than where they can get it cheaply made. BBC I think is doing that. But it is also unrealistic for buyers to believe you are going to get a leather satchel made in the west for $270. MSRPs are always bulls---. I paid about $250 for a leather satchel made in the US about 20 years ago.
I would also echo that time and time again MD offers inexpensive or reasonable products made in Asia which is followed by the customary complaints of quality only to have a new drop come out with a item manufactured in the west and then to have a deluge of complaints on the high price. Just take a look at any of the low versus top end knife drops.
