I have this G10 stainless liner blade since January. Among all my pocket folders in the under $500 price range, this one is the most comfortable one-hand operation folder. For everyday use around the house, this is the one I'll reach for simply because of the ease of one-hand operation. The process of getting the Brous blade out of the pocket, flip it, use it, close it, and go back to the pocket is so effortless that you don't even remember you've used it.
PS. I did take it apart and re-grease the ball-bearing pivot so it is a lot smoother.
If massdrop decided to bring back the CF version with titanium liners, I'll jump into the drop
This knife AGAIN!!! Why?????? Bring on the VR-71
Got my Brous Caliber flipper today. Cannot flip it open or pull open the blade. Using a torx wrench, I tried to loosen the pivot but it still did not work correctly. I was able to pull the blade out of the hand by grabbng the back of the blade. However, it made a raspy metal on metal sound. What to do?

Same issue with mine. Some lube helped a lot.

The pocket clip took a ugly gash out of the paint on my vehicle today while getting in. Yes, my own fault where someone parked very close and the knife was clipped on my right pocket. My previous knife didn't have such a pronounced edge on the pocket clip where it didn't do this.... for those who care. Still a great knife. 179/300.

I feel your pain, man. I scratched the shit out of my leather steering wheel in my new car, the first day carrying this knife. Not the knife's fault, just myself to blame.
I got the Titanium and Carbon Fiber version of the Caliber flipper and it is my absolute favorite knife for a multitude of reasons. One of my favorite features that I haven't heard as much praise for is the pocket clip, which I think Brous does perfectly. It is secure yet minimal.

Compared to Spyderco Yojimbo and Manix 2

I'm not a fan of deep carry pocket clips because they tend to get in the way of gripping the knife. On the Yojimbo for example, you'll notice the pocket clip is nearly unnoticeable inside the palm.
And due to the holes they typically need to access the screws, along with the clip being folded over, I find deep carry clips tend to flex and wiggle inside the hand during use.
Also some have weak retention and wants to hop out of the pocket if you jump or sprint.

Interesting - thanks for the insight! I didn't even consider the hole or the fold being a drawback but you make a great point.
I assume this will start at 301 or whatever the next numbering would be? It wouldn't make sense to have a numbered knife or anything, if the sequence is always the same as the previous, limited run.

Hey @Ronaldo71 -- Massdrop does not sell counterfeit items, period. The original release was a limited edition of 300 with carbon fiber scales and titanium liners. This knife is also limited edition of 300, but with G10 scales and stainless steel liners. The description here correctly states that these flippers were designed by Jason and made by Brous. Thanks for your vigilance, I hope that clears up any confusion.

Just my guesses: - I'd be more inclined to assume that the current drop is for leftovers from the original 300 that were produced. - I believe the 500 limited production was for the Titanium/Carbon Fiber Calibers, and the 300 limited production was for the Stainless/G10 Calibers.
This again!! Why not the VR-71 -OR- if you are going to rerun the same model at least change the material handle or the blade, come on now!!
Is this for the Brous Bionic 2.0 ? If not, there is a difference of smoothness with the flipper between the two...btw for $20 more, Brous auto's are available..
Very nice blade, but the locking mechanism needs to be improved. When locking from a flicking action, it will engage the sideways lock. But if you manually open it with your hand, it doesn't want to lock in place sometimes.
Also, what is the point of the number if each drop has the same 1 to 300 numbering.

Being that these are numbered, will they ship in the order in which they were purchased?
Is this a fake? The one on KnifeCenter has it G10 w/ titanium liners $209.95
Ronaldo71
Is is not a fake. The parts cost is decreased so it sells for less, most likely the retail price because of the lower cost of the handle and the stainless vs titanium liner. Nice knife though.
Has anyone Whirlpool tested the Brous bearings? :-/
Fuel98
What does that mean?
Is the grind only on one of the sides? In the picture it looks flat on the reverse
Can you try and get the VR-71 with the carbon fiber handles
wow nice knife, but I don't like liner locks. If only it was framelock titanium on one side I'd even pay 50 more and buy it on a whim, otherwise very nice aesthetic and I bet it feels great in hand.
Is it possible to ship Hong Kong?
Great price for a great knife!
When you gonna start sending to UK again?
Welp, I'm like 97% certain this wouldn't pass aus customs, unless massdrop has some kind of smuggling ring or something?
Huggy_Bear
I'd trust your gut if you're 97% sure. Our smuggling ring isn't the greatest.
Huggy_Bear
It might. Flippers are sold locally. However Spring assisted systems like Kershaw Speed Safe are illegal and will be siezed. Even then it can depend on the Customs Officer inspecting. It's a gamble for $200. I heard of Leatherman Waves getting seized!
Beautiful blade. Too bad it's a liner lock and I'm a lefty.
karlthebaer
I'm a lefty and have always used liner locks in their standard form such as this without any issues. Goes the same for framelocks. The clip is reversible so that's not an issue. Guess its just something I've gotten used to
When will the credit/refunds be issued for this drop? I responded to the support email 2 weeks ago and still nothing.
greatwhitebigfoot
@greatwhitebigfoot We do not have an email in our system for you sir. If you don't mind opening up a ticket with CS at massdrop.com/support or by clicking the [Support] button below, CS will handle this for you pronto.
If you want the flipper to work, like a bullet then you have to loosen the screw that goes through the blade, slightly. Adjust it so that it isn't loose but isn't too tight and you will have a correctly working knife. It is adjusted at the factory a little too tight.
It also took me about an hour to get a good edge on the knife. Ok from the factory but they don't put a smooth edge on the knife. I have it cleaned up now and polished to an almost surgical edge. No point in being any sharper as it will just dull fast.
At least on the liner they do a lot of cut-out, which decreases the weight. I have a William Henry with a true titanium liner with no cut out and it is light for its size.
jamato8
In lieu of loosen up the screw, I used the Break-Free CLP and it works wonder! I'm able to flip 9 out of 10 with consistent faster speed than before using the Break-Free CLP. I also noticed that this flipper utilizes the "fly-wheel" momentum to flip open the blade as opposed to breaking thru the detent resistance.
Flipping this folder is highly addictive. The smooth feeling derived from "spinning" the flywheel to open the folder as well as "closing" the blade back into the folder is so unique in comparison to my other folders that I want to flip and close it again and again.
Regarding "fire like a bullet" deployment of the Caliber folder, it's all about the technique and not about the liner material. My conclusion is based on the two videos from the links below. Make sure you click on the "QuickFlick Video" after accessing the webpage.
The link below points to the G10 Caliber which is the same folder for this MassDrop:
http://www2.knifecenter.com/item/JBCALIBERBLKSAT/brous-blades-caliber-flipper-3-d2-satin-blade-black-g10-handles
Notice they also mislabeled the liner type.
The link below points to the more expensive Carbon Fiber handle with the titanium liner.
http://www2.knifecenter.com/item/JBCALIBERSW/brous-blades-caliber-flipper-d2-stonewash-blade-carbon-fiber-handles
Notice that the presenter in the video flipped the G10 and the Carbon Fiber models with the same high speed. This lead me to conclude that it is all about the technique and not because of the liner type. Now, I need to refine my technique so I can flip the G10 Caliber like this guy did in the video.
