I hike and backpack in the desert environments quite a bit and this is just another layer of protection. In those environments it takes about a minute to bring up the nav points and gives an 'as the crow flies' direction.
I'm guessing the GPS receiver Is weak as it does take awhile to work in the city, under heavy tree cover. But for backcountry, off-trail hikes, where getting lost is more than just inconvenient, it weighs nothing and works fine.
