An additional $21.75 to ship to Australia. Is this an indication of how fragile the product is, that it needs very special attention to packaging to survive the journey?

I wouldn't say it's standard... Amazon, Ebay, and Walmart all disclose the total cost of the item before you checkout or add to cart. Even REI mentions it on the product page.
I'm a domestic customer so I can't speak to the experience of international customers or what they are seeing, but I was annoyed with trying to purchase a $14 item only to learn that is only 2/3 of the landed cost.

Yes the total cost of the "item" is disclosed. But not the shipping. If it says free shipping sure, but if it doesn't say free shipping you can't assume shipping is free. Or unless they have flat rate shipping. But most sites, if they are charging shipping, need to know where it is shipping before they can tell you how much it is.
just got the stools today. they dont feel stable. im 250lb and it feels flimsy
ObionBun
Did you get the Regular or XL? If you just got it July I'm guessing you got the regular since the XL was not available. The regular has a weight capacity of 200lbs. The XL will be available on the next drop and has a weight capacity of 275lbs. I always tell people, it's like getting into a canoe for the first time. Take your time and get a feel for how it performs with your weight on it. These stools have been used in all walks of life, but you've got to respect the weight limits and understand the ground underneath the stool to ensure it is stable enough for the stool.
Whoa, the shipping on this is insane! Guess I'll try to find an alternative here in Canada.
Any idea where I can get something similar that can handle 300 lbs? Am fat :(
47$ for shiping to Israel?! No thank you
21,50 to ship one unit to Finland. No thanks.
I really liked the stool, I wanted to buy two, but my surprise is that the shipping cost is $ 7.95 and the price of the stool is $ 13.99, how can it cost so much to ship an item that weighs 21 oz to Miami? I do not think it is correct and I will pass this drop.
While stools are amazing, and I personally carry one with me every day, I do not carry this one. If Army surplus stores are a thing near you, keep on the lookout for what they may have; I got my stool there, and compared to this one it's about the same weight despite being all steel and nylon. Not to mention it is sturdy as hell.
Once you add the S/H it is close to the price of Amazon. Not an amazing deal. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OTZ2E6/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I2TSW6XBMZ5M51&colid=14NL46PK6XFJG
That picture of the two people using the stool in front of the tent is hilarious. Love the city buildings in the background - Urban camping!

That’s the only thing I e taken away from this as well 😄
I usually take the time to write a review when when something exceeds my expectations or when I feel extremely disappointed. Sadly this time I do not feel very happy with this purchase. I bought 2 because I really liked the concept. However the third time I used one of them it broke, I'm guessing that in part was due to the unstable issue, but most of all I find it to be poorly constructed, with weak materials.

I just sent you an email with pic of mine.
No, they just send me a new one. I tossed the broken one after I received the replacement. Apologies for my delayed response.
Is there an update on shipping?
I got two of these and found that they are very heavy and not very stable and not comfortable at all. If you are considering getting one of these, take the money you will spend on these and put it towards a therm-a-rest Z Seat.

Right now it is on sale for $60 (reg price $75) https://www.byerofmaine.com/review/product/list/id/112/category/9/
I bought two of these. They were initially somewhat difficult to work with. After posting my initial [poor] review I was contacted by Dan Hall from Byer of Maine, the manufacturer. He and I walked through some of my issues. Part of the problem, I think, was that the stools are so stiff when you get them that it takes some use to get the fabric loosened up a bit. The more I use the stools the better they have become. So I am editing & updating my initial review to say that the stools are now behaving the way they ought to. They do seem to be well put together... You may have to work with them a bit, sort of like working in a new baseball glove...

Shellbella - I have revised my initial review. The stools were difficult to work with initially. The more I have used them the easier they have gotten to use.

thank you - I read what @Dannyhammock was saying about standing behind their product and decided to go ahead with my order. I appreciate you getting back to me on your review :)
Check this youtube review out. There's a particular way you need to sit on it...

How to sit starts about minute 6 - the single leg needs to be in front of you rather than behind you. Then comments not to twist on it as the hub then flexes.
I have one of these! Nice to see it on Mass drop. Thinking about getting another one. I have had mine since 2009 and it still works great! I even took it to Philmont during a 90 mile hike. It did not add much weight to my 55lb backpack and was well worth the use during the occasional stop. Quick to set up (once you do it a few times) and quick to break down. It is compact, yet robust! Thanks for a great product!!!
Love it, light and saves a ton of room to pack other gear.
I really like this stool. Much easier to pack than a camp chair.
I personally have the Kijaro dual lock and the chair is 10X better than this one at almost the same price.
Will888
On Amazon The Kijaro is a full size chair with arms and I think cup holders. And weighs 9.5 lb. So not a camping stool. Compare apples with apples. Watch the vid and see how small the Trilite folds down. You certainly can't pack the Kijaro on a backpack trip.
This is a waste. I have the Camtoa chairs that are lighter, smaller, easier to setup and you can sit in them, not on them. The weight alone makes the Trilite a loser for me. It will stay at home until the next garage sale. I paid $29 for each Camtoa chair w/free shipping on Amazon.
Carlton39
I have the Comota chair it is too big and heavy for backpacking. It is even too small for car camping and very uncomfortable. It will tip over backwards because the legs sink into the ground. Again, compare apples with apples and watch how small the Trilite folds down.
wow, shipping is >50% of cost. yikes!

It should be $24.95 on Amazon.
Dannyhammock
I should have clarified, I don't mind spending four dollars more on Amazon so I don't have to wait at least two more weeks for a shipping notice from Massdrop.
Not sure why this is getting all the hate. I have an XL and at 6'8" and typically hovering around 260 lbs it works great for me. Sure it is easily tipped, but it's a tripod. Don't expect to flop down in it like a recliner and you'll be fine. The couple of folks that said the seat comes off should probably take a second look at the instructions and verify they have it set up correctly. I usually use mine in the backyard messing with my fire pit or around the house/garage working on things that are low to the ground. Probably wouldn't take it backpacking unless it was a short trip (distance wise) but so far I have been satisfied with it. Considering buying another at this price for backup, but the one I have is still in great shape so I don't anticipate needing another one.
Do Not buy this. Very unstable. Too tall and wide for the leg span of the stool. Bad design flaw because the seat bar actually comes out of the clamp and I bought the XL for a 120lb person. Very unsafe. Not meant at all for camping, fishing, or hiking. Can only be used on a flat even surface. Very disappointed in Massdrop because I can't return to them for a refund after on only a few minutes of use. Massdrop should test products before selling.

Byer of Maine has sold thousands of these stools to very happy customers for many years now, who use them in a variety of settings. It is important to understand the product and your intended use. I think it would be best to use the stool on a flat surface, but we do sell lots of stools to people using them for camping, fishing, and hiking without complaints. We proudly stand behind our products and warranty against manufacturers defects. Byer of Maine has been around since 1880 and will always stand behind the product, offer returns or replacements for defective products, and our goal will always be for 100% customer satisfaction. I just received my shipment today. I have to say I am completely disappointed in this product. It is literally a pile of junk. Weighing only 125 Lbs, I expected this stool to be a reasonably stable set for me. Unfortunately, it is very unstable and I find it more comfortable to simply squat than to attempt to set in this thing. My disappointment with this item goes well beyond the item itself. First, I would hope Massdrop would better vet the items they promote for quality. This is the number one thing I look for from a service like Massdrop. The next thing I want is a good value, in this case, the item is available for substantially less cost from other vendors and with no wait.
The only good thing about this item is that since it is small, it will take up little space in the garbage can.
I am waiting for a couple more drops to arrive from Massdrop, but it this item is any example of the experience, there will be no future participation from me.

I have to say that I am disappointed that after joining this drop, I found the same item at Dicks (http://goo.gl/b9sN0D) for only $25 dollars. Other than my own foolishness, why did I pay more from Massdrop?
