Hi!
I've been looking for a new set of IEMs to work with and a friend recommended me the InEar StageDriver 2 model (my budget is around US$450) and I'm wondering how the Lyra 2s compare with the SD2. Also, i'm only using an iPod nano for my music and i'm also wondering if this'll make investing in IEMs like these worth my money? Help please! Thanks!

SojkThe Lyra 2 does better when it's driven by something with more power than a Nano. They'll still sound good but they won't sound the best. Never heard the SD2 from review they seem like vastly different sound signatures

FenyaThanks for the quick reply! And okay! If I'm looking to upgrade my nano to a better player, could you recommend me some models please? I've not heard the Lira 2 yet (will drop by a shop to test them out) but the SD2 were clear and the range was pretty wide for me too. But I felt like the bass was a bit lacking although it wasn't bad per se. I'm not a pro at these things but from what I read the warmth and bass from the Lyra 2 sounds really tempting.

SojkThe Lyra 2 warmth and bass might actually be what you're looking for then. And as I've noted somewhere, I was surprised how clear the vocals and high notes were able to present themselves despite the warmth because the warmer it is, usually means those qualities will be muffled.
As for the player, what price range are you looking at? Are you intent on using a dedicated player instead of your phone for music? There's a drop for the Pico Slim amp that should be able to power the Lyra 2 sufficiently.

FenyaIs that so? Then okay i'll go take a closer look at the Lyra 2s. Thanks!
The Pico amp looks tempting everyone keeps saying it's a classic and it's worth the money but my priority is kinda just getting a new IEM for now haha. In the event that I do get this Lyra 2 i'm gonna be broke. Also, i want to wait for my Nano to spoil first before looking at something else. Thanks though will keep the Pico in mind!
I'm looking for one between $100 and $200. Well, I'm under the impression that phone players aren't very good when it comes to playing music. Also, I prefer having a separate player so that my phone's battery doesn't dry up quicker and I also save storage space on my phone as well. I'm using an S7 from Samsung btw. Your thoughts please?

SojkPhone audio quality isn't necessarily bad. I'd need to double check but if Samsung is still doing the whole "consumer tuning", then it might be best to get a DAP if you get the Lyra 2 cause it will be bassy and trebles might get harsh.
IMO getting a neutral DAP would fit the Lyra 2 better because of how bassy it is, but if you get that other IEM, you might want to get something more warm.
Personally I use a rockboxed XDuoo X3 with a Oppo HA-2, mostly cause I've yet to find that end game player and this does its job. (This DAP is rather lifeless without the warmth and musicality of the HA-2 amp so I wouldn't recommend it by itself. Of course you can always fiddle with EQ if you have it rockboxed.)
TBH I really dunno what to rec. The 100 to 200 price point has so many short comings.
The XDuoo X10 was actually pretty nice and fairly neutral, however there's no rockbox option yet and there're quite a bit of bugs that haven't been sorted.
The Fiio X3 is rather warm, but there should be a 3rd gen coming out soon so you might want to wait.
If you can bust out a 100 more though, the AK Jr at its current slashed price is a really nice deal. Nice warm sound and looks nice too. It might be difficult to use when you have too many songs though cause the UI will lag trying to load them all.
The Fiio X5 3rd gen is apparently pretty damn great too and of a neutral tuning.

FenyaOh wow! Okay thanks i didn't know there was a difference in sound signatures for DAPs. Alright cool. Will look out for a neutral DAP then haha!
That's true. 100-200 is pretty low tbh so needless to say the quality won't be as good. I think i'll wait for the X3 3rd gen though. Was looking at the 2nd gen haha. the AK Jr and X5 3rd gen look great but maybe next time when I have more spending power.
Went to Fiio's forum to take a look, Bryant from technical support said "Probably this summer, but we couldn't release any detailed info now" on 14/03/17 so maybe it's coming soon? that would be cool

SojkDAPs consists of an amp and a DAC and those come in a variety of sound sigs. Speaking of DAPs, the Shanling M1 that just got dropped. Seems like there's some hardware and software problems but at this price point I'm sorta expecting it :P At least it seems like it'll make up for in sound though
If the Fiio is sticking to the tuning for the X3 then it will veer on the warm bassy side, of course you can always fix that with EQ.

FenyaOh okay. So the "natural" tuning of the DAP doesn't really matter that much because i can always manually adjust the settings right? But then the issue would be getting the tuning right haha! Should I prioritize sound quality over potential hardware/software problems though? like in the case of this Shanling M1 (assuming the sound quality is decent enough).

SojkIn a sense yes. It'll probably be a pain in the ass but once you get it right you don't need to fiddle much with it anymore (unless you change gear). Now I'm not sure if you can manually change each band for best tweaking or if it only has presets but that's something you should keep an eye on.
As for audio quality or build, my question is how soon do you see yourself upgrading to something better? If it's more than a year and half you might want to prioritze on build because the warranty runs out in a year typically and the exchange might die in half that. If you can upgrade soon then audio quality of course.

FenyaHmm okay. So it's technically possible but may not be possible most of the time then. In that case looking for one that doesn't require tweaking would be better. Do the DAPs' tuning "style" depend on the price range? E.g. Cheaper ones focus on warmth and bass. I'm thinking it might be because certain programming/parts cost varies.
That's a very valid point you brought up there! Turnover rate for these audio equipment is quite important. I typically expect them to last for at least 2 years so perhaps build would be more important for me.

SojkPartially? I'm not too well versed on chips and their basic flavor. But I think tuning to suit a larger audience plays a bigger role in offerings that tend toward warm and bassy since that is what most people enjoy. For example my Xduoo X3 is pretty neutral and that's only around 100 USD.
TBH I expect any audio gear that's above 300 USD to have pretty damn good quality cause I wanna be able to use them for a lifetime. My Shure 530s have been with me for 10 years with care and only using them at home. Daily drivers I'd use something lower end.

FenyaReally? That's interesting. And okay I'll continue looking around and check the X3s out while I'm at it! I decided to get the Lyra 2 by the way. Tested them out at a shop and I liked them. Thanks for the recommendation! Now to look for a neutral DAC. Hohoho.
but OMG that's insane. Yeah 10 years is a reaaaally long time I'm amazed you kept yours so well for so long! But yeah that's my thoughts as well now that I decided to buy the Lyra 2. Gonna keep it as good as possible. So you have 2 sets of IEMs? the 530s for home use and another one for outside use? :O
