Newer does not bean better and older does not mean worst, especially with Camera lenses.
I am more impressed with the better constructed lenses Canon (and Nikon) had made in the late 80s early 90s than almost anything in the current lineup. 50mm is a great prime lens and 1.8 aperture would make this one of the faster (low light performance) lenses you can get. To me this lens is in a similar (if not same) boat as the Nikkor AF 50mm 1.8 other than the Canon lens has more plastic in their construction.
