I'd advise anyone who doesn't know the difference between the new and old versions of this lens to read an online review by people who are knowledgeable in the field of photography and do actual objective testing. Listening to people who don't know anything about the lens but the specs is... well... unhelpful when it comes to buying lens and cameras. Image quality is a lot more than specs alone, and most people don't know in depth enough about the specs in the first place to pull accurate guesses from it as to how something performs.
Here's one of the reviews online about the new lens vs this one, with test pics and everything: http://petapixel.com/2015/05/30/battle-of-the-nifty-fifties-canons-50mm-f1-8-lenses/ Other online sources agree with the main points of this review too, so it isn't inconsistent QC causing the differences.
To summarise, the main improvements are: Better image quality (more consistent sharpeness across the image, less chromatic abberation) Better bokeh from more, rounded aperture blades (produces softer and more natural looking out-of-focus backgrounds) Better autofocus (speed, accuracy, noise) Better build quality
And all at the same MSRP (and Canon MSRPs tend to be rather similar to street price, massdrop pricing excluded).

pixllMan, I haven't been letting myself look at lenses because I don't want to spend money on them, but damn that's impressive. Especially the corner sharpness and rounded bokeh at apertures smaller than 1.8. Guess it's time to give my old one to my mom or something. I needs that shit.

WoogityA pretty worthy successor to a Canon classic, I would say. If only it had IS too, it would be perfect. Ah, a man can dream.
