I got the Rebel SL1/100D from the recent drop so I'm still new to the DSLR scene, but I'd love to see a good walk around lens. I already got a 40mm Pancake, dunno if these are good zoom compliments...

Seeing more camera stuff is great though, even as daunting as this lens is to a newbie like me.

GeigeEngelI can't say about those but the f/2.8-4 17-70mm Sigma produces for APS-C bodies is a brilliant lens at half the price of those 2. It might also be a consideration if you don't want to fork out nearly $2K for the 24-70mm f/2.8 L lens.

Haulien@Haulien, who said anything about the 24-70L? Both the 15-85 and 17-55 are good lenses on a crop body. The Sigma 17-70 has a great range and good max aperture, but is MUCH softer than the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 or Canon 15-85. It's a bit of a 'tweener combining a longer focal range of the 15-85 and wider aperture of the 17-55, but image quality suffers as a result. If you value range over IQ for everyday shooting, it's not a bad choice though.
@GeigeEngel, I shot with the 15-85 and Sigma version of the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 (Sigma 17-50 f/2.8) on my crop bodies. Both were solid walk-around choices. The 15-85 gives you more on the wide end for landscapes and such (2mm wider doesn't seem like that much, but it really is!), but the 17-55/50 gives you at least a stop more light.

Ninja1283Good to get solid feedback on a comparison, or close to a comparison of the two lens. I think the camera bug has hit me hard and I really want one of those lenses now. The 17-70 Haulien mentions does sound nice for a little more range, but your right, I did want that lower stop and image quality does matter to me. Here's to seeing more lens drops!

GeigeEngelFor more versatility, try the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens - it offers a higher range than the 15-85mm you listed with the same aperture, as well as having silent auto focus which is nice for video.
The first lens (17-55mm) you mentioned is nice if you want to be more artistic, as it allows you to bring your aperture to f/2.8 (which can give you brighter, cleaner images with a blurred background if that's your thing), but doesn't have that great of a zoom length to work with considering you have the 40mm pancake.
Overall, the 18-135mm should be the way to go (offering wide and decent telephoto angles) - just use your 40mm as your artistic lens to play around with. There are third party lenses too (not made by Canon) which may work for a better price, which you may want to look into.

EntooI will definitely look into that as well, more zoom is something I did want as well, thanks!
