Is this a US import or a grey market?

I'll just say from my experience as a working professional... this lens focuses like a bear and has terrible chromatic aberration ( purple and green fringing ) and is not particularly sharp. The Sigma 85 Art bests it in every regard ( Sharpness, CA control, AF speed and accuracy ) except for weight and the extra 1/3 of a stop. Having used both lenses extensively I would never choose the 85L of the 2 ( And I have since switched to Sony and have no horse in this race anymore )

Gotta say, of all the lenses I own, this focal length is my least used, and least useful. No doubt it's a good lens, but without a specific use for an 85mm, it's a lot of dough to cover the ground a 50 or 70-200 could do as well or better.
Great for portrait work but I'm stuck for what else?!

RayFThis is definitely a portrait lens. But it is also pretty useful as a sports lens instead of the 50mm. It takes some experience to use it well though.

Well I’m a bit Luke warm on the deal. Description doesn’t say whether it’s imported (gray market) or an authorized US import. No warranty service on imported. Typicaly imports sell for a few hundred less depending on retail price. About a year ago I purchased a 100-400 which had a back focus issue at certain zoom settings. CanonUSA fixed it, but would not have done so if it were imported. Some lens issues can be resolved in-camera, others cannot. It is wise to critically test any new lens, regardless of make.

Thanks Jaysun. I’m assuming distributor is USA based. If not please advise.
It will be either the Canon-L or a Zeiss Milvus. I would like to see some Zeiss EF drops one day....... Zeiss is gneiss too.

Hoping to see the 85mm f/1.4 with IS on massdrop. I would take that over this one.
This goes for $1850 http://bhpho.to/2aYHPsk on a normal day. It's the more recent version of this lens. Not a bad deal if you have the scratch. It's one of my top 5 wishlist lenses! I'm thinking about it.

Why not buy a Sigma art lens for $1.2k instead that's newer?
I wish Sigma would make some of their fast constant aperture zooms for Fuji X! The cool ones seem to all be APSC anyway.

Hmm a good question, off the cuff I would have said it was a II but now I am not sure. I borrowed it from a friend so I will see if I can reach him. The other variable is that my body is a 5D MK II which is not known for its fast focus.

The price of $1,499.99 is not that impressive. Its what it normally drops to in other sites. $1,100 its a really hot price.

IsmapicsEhh? 50L goes for 1k-1,100, even on ebay. I have been hounding the 85L ii for years and this here is a very competitive price to used ones. the 85L v1 goes for 1,100 at a the very, very best, not the v2. KEH has one v2 at a "bargain" condition for over $1,500...
I would snap one up for work (darn, would have really been a good move too) but I recently re-outfitted my bird photography set up for some spring migration research. Can't have all the toys in one go.... So, the uber 85 lens continues to evade me. Good luck and have fun to the folk who get this deal! Hope the L's keep coming!
