Hey everyone,
Sorry for the mix up. This drop is for the original lens. We are working to update the page shortly. Thank you for pointing us in the right direction. Added a great video too (p.s. if you have a sec check out the DigitalRev video for this lens too!).
Update: everything should be all set now. Thank you again everyone!

MikeMDThanks for the update. While new to and a huge fan of Massdrop, a few thoughts:
The high end, long zoom market has come a long ways since this lens was first introduced in 1998. Canon not only has several new lenses and even a replacement, albeit at much higher costs, but competition from Sigma and Tamron have leveled the field. The Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 and Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 are both slightly slower than the Canon, but offer greater reach (you don't get the Canon as a go-to portrait lens), a decade's worth of image stabilization to build on, weather resistance, etc., all at lower prices than the Canon. That said, this is a GREAT price for a new version of this lens ($200 less than B&H/Amazon); the used market is flooded with these, however, with good ones going for about $900.
I'm slightly tempted, but with a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II and a 2x II converter, I pretty much get the same results as I would with the 100-400.
FWIW, if I was headed on safari, I'd either get the Sigma above . . . or rent one from Lensrentals.com with full coverage!

climbrocksAgreed, I would be includes to join if we can get a deal on the 100-400, MK II, 200-400, or even the 70-200 Mk II.
