Careful of these camera purchases on Massdrop. Most of this still if grey-market from outside the US. The lens I just got was non-US stock and no US warranty. The reason for the low price.

MikeBahniukWhile we do sell International Spec products they are labeled as such.
This drop is a US spec product with a US warranty.

JaysunSo regardless if I buy from B&H photo or Massdrop on this drop, I'll get the same warranty? That would be a ideal as the 70-200 II 2.8 lens offered right now also has US warranty. For both items, that would be about $420 in savings

JaysunJay, I have checked w/Canon and Massdrop is not an authorized dealer. As per Canon's policies, products sold by non-authorized dealers are considered used products (as they are sold by Canon to a middle man who then sells to someone else who in turn sells then retail). Could Massdrop please comment on that issue? Specifically, are the Canon products sold on this site purchased directly from Canon and is Massdrop a authorized dealer (I entertain the option that maybe Canon was not up-to-date on their information given the nature of Massdrop). Thanks

DesastorGreat question !
As you know Massdrop is not an authorized Canon retailer but for this particular drop and any drop that has a 1 year-Canon warranty our vendor is.
These are neither used or bought from an non-authorized dealer. All our US model cameras come in their original unopened boxes with the US warranty cards and can be registered with Canon USA online.
For warranty purposes Canon USA typically has issue with products that were purchased from outside of their sales regions ie. Europe, Japan or UAE to name a few examples.

JaysunJay, I understand that these are new units, in new boxes and sold to Massdrop by an authorized dealer. Legally however, and Canon emphasizes that in their own rules, unless purchased from Canon directly or directly from one of its authorized dealers, the unit is used. I agree that Massdrop purchases are a bit of an oddity as a Massdrop purchased camera does not seem to meet the Gray Market definition if it was purchased from an authorized dealer in the US (who in turn intended to sell to the US market). However, how do I, as someone who is purchasing a product that was sold from Canon to an Authorized Dealer, from an Authorized Dealer to Massdrop and from Massdrop to me, can be assured that Canon will stand by their warranty. A simple verbal assurance by Massdrop I am sorry to say it just not reassuring enough. From my point of view, I won't have any recourse other than paying for a repair myself or eating the cost of the camera in case of a catastrophic defect and Canon retreating behind their policy. Is there anything in writing from Canon or the Authorized dealer about Massdrop purchases as it is a novel approach and maybe not envisioned/forseen when Canon's warranty contract was drafted? I'l love to save +$400 but I'd also like to sleep at night w/out Canon photobombing my nightmares.

DesastorSounds like for warranty issues, you'll need to send it to Massdrop who will in turn send it to the vendor. I think if you really need assurance, JaySun should release the name of the vendor and you can check if the vendor is an authorized dealer. I've never dealt with warranty issues on massdrop, but i'm going to hold back on buying the cam this time around until i figure out the policies.

MezzoforteAnd that is the problem. Imaging you drop 4K on a camera and then MD goes out of business. The vendor may show you the finger bc they dealt w/MD (if you ever get that name) and now have a convenient way to avoid responsibility. All of the sudden you stand there w/your pants down.
Exactly right that I want assurances. This is not mickey mouse business, but a serious transaction. I don't like to be told "there is warranty" if it explicitly violates policies set by Canon. If Massdrop has an arrangement w/Canon or a buyer I should have access to the information to make an informed decision. Hence, I did not buy. More interestingly and possibly more importantly, Jay failed to respond to my last inquiry despite tracking it. Not a good sign.
I am have grown very curious about MD electronics. I bought a few of them early on and all of them, I mean ALL OF THEM, had defects early on and then crapped out. I am starting to seriously wonder if MD is a dumping ground for 2nd hand electronics (such as returns) that vendors (such in this case) can dump easily while reducing loss. I asked about that as well and MD did not respond to that either.

DesastorThis is why I pay full price for gear at BH. My Sony a6300 had problems but because BH is a authorized seller for gear, Sony accepted it and fixed my problems, no questions asked. I haven't purchased any camera gear but it's posts that these that make me hesitate. While this is Canon and not Sony, the same logic applies.
