Start Your Next DIY Car Project

Connected to your car's Engine Control Module (a mini computer that monitors emissions and runs your engine), the OBD-II port is used by mechanics and dealerships to read fault codes, mass air flow, engine speed and other useful data. So what if you could program it to change the way your car functions, or to detect problems long before your check engine light comes on? With these DIY kits, you can. Completely open source, these kits track and read your car’s CAN bus, which allows you to explore your car’s potential—whether you want to text yourself maintenance reminders, turn your car into a weather station, or track mileage on a spreadsheet. All sample code (plus extensive libraries and a community of members) are available online to help you get started.

Note: At checkout, choose between the Carloop Basic, Carloop Bluetooth (+$5) and Carloop 3G (+ $55).

Which Version is for You?

The Basic version features the Particle Photon. Since the Particle Photon is a micro-controller with Wi-Fi, it allows you to connect to the cloud. The Bluetooth Version allows you to access the information from your smartphone over Bluetooth. It’s the quickest way to get a custom engine fault code reader. The 3G version comes with 3G cellular connectivity, allowing you to access information from any 3G-connected device. At checkout, you can also grab the Car Hacker’s Handbook, which is chock-full of tips and tricks to give you a deeper understanding of the computer systems and embedded software in modern vehicles. It provides detailed explanations surrounding communications over the CAN bus between devices and systems—great for dedicated DIYers.
