Casio G-Shock Mudmaster GWG-1000 Watch

Casio’s G-Shock Mudmaster GWG-1000 offers a number of features aimed at the outdoorsman, from a 10,000-meter altimeter and a barometer to a digital compass, thermometer, and stopwatch. And as its name suggests, this solar-powered watch is resistant to both shock and mud. A sapphire crystal with nonreflective coating protects against scratches and prevents glare, while a screw-down crown helps the Mudmaster achieve a 200-meter water-resistance rating. In short, it’s the ultimate tool watch.

As a timekeeper, the Mudmaster is virtually perfect: It relies on Multi-Band 6, an atomic device that receives calibration signals up to six times daily from one of six transmitters around the world. The watch also allows you to view the time in 29 international cities, with each city represented in three-letter abbreviations around the outer ring. As for everyday functionality, the Mudmaster is equipped with five daily alarms, a 60-minute countdown timer, and a digital day-date display.

As might be expected from a watch measuring nearly 60 millimeters wide and 18 millimeters thick, the Mudmaster is nothing short of burly. The aesthetic here is tactical: the bulky stainless steel case; the pushers at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 o’clock; the resin strap; the screw-down crown. Meanwhile, the hands are similar to those you might find on a serious dive watch, as are the large and legible Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9. The digital day-display at 6 o’clock stands in contrast to the rest of the analog dial.
