Looks like a great product, but no support for portable equipment it seems (iOS, Android). It’s mainly a DAC/amp for computer equipment (Mac, PC, Linux). Therefore it is not an alternative to the Dragonfly Red...
PeteMtlFWIW, I can't imagine it being much different than the DACPort Slim to drive from a smartphone. I know Android supports it. It is going to fly through the battery though.
PeteMtlMany customers reported that DACport Slim and DACport HD (featured on this drop) works great with android, but yes, because of the high output power ability, the product does need some power, so the phone battery may last less than usual. And yes, people have used external power banks with great success.
breakjeiI totally get it. Portable has different meanings. We see a lot of use with people who take their laptop to a coffee shop to work there. DACport HD is very small (the size of a lighter), yet offers awesome audio quality and a loud output, sufficient to power big cans. So if you like to work in coffee shops, on the train, plain, etc., then it's actually an awesome little portable device. The laptop battery is huge by comparison, so it will work for many hours without significant reduction.
PeteMtlWorks great on iOS using cck + powerbank. Not as clean a setup as you but still portable. Centrance does make a thicker model with battery eliminating this issue. The big deal I think is I can drive any can I own to painfully loud levels. ;-)
iguanajmSo the battery would literaly drop dead in minutes? Or is it longer like half an hour to one hour? Or worse still, slim wouldn't work properly using phone's own power.
zy.evaIt will work for longer than a few minutes, but I can't really quantify it. I use my slim with my phone for hours, but I have a massive extended battery case on the phone I use it with. I would still expect to be able to get a half hour at least on the HD with a typical phone battery though. Again, it's really hard to quantify so this is, at best, a SWAG.
iguanajmI was going to buy a lightning to single usb camera kit and it seems not going to work, the only viable option on iphone is the usb3 camera kit with one extra lightning connector then. Really appreciate your advice.
zy.evaYes you need the usb3 kit. Have you looked at dragonfly? iPhone has enough to power that inline. There are also other dac/amps with built in batteries.
