I can't get this DAC to work on my system. I have tried uninstalling and restarting over and over. The device finally gets detected after multiple attempts plugging and unplugging the device, then all I get is garbled static and my system dramatically slows down while attempting to stream youtube videos. Did I receive a defective device? I've attempted using different headsets, nothing is working.

jyoshi20Have you tried different USB ports? Especially USB 2.0 and 3.0?

jyoshi20I've had that happen.
Try another USB port. Some ports on my desktop didn't play well with the device.

jyoshi20I've tried to install on a Win 8.1 system and get a similar experience. No valid sound comes out. I've installed and uninstalled a few times. some times I get a message that the device is invalid "the device malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it", when it does install, the sound is static/garbled, not related to the sound that should be produced. When the unit does install and I go to the CEntrance control panel, there is nothing that lets me select 192kHz audio, only 96 kHz as top rate. I've tried 96kHz and 44.1 kHz but only get static.
I'm using a USB cable from my Kindle that fits, but I wonder if that is an issue.
I suspect a driver issue, but please instruct what I should do next. If it doesn't work, should I send the unit back?

mhargrove28Trying to set this up on my laptop which is on Windows 10. Running into the same issue. Device is invalid and windows does not recognize it.
When using it with my desktop over the past 10 hours or so that I've had it, I've had at least half a dozen complete computer freezes, which required a hard reset. I've also had WinAmp shit the bed for a minute or two and freeze up.
Ugh. Not a great out of box experience so far.
SomeTechNoobSorry about Windows 10 guys. We are working on that. If you have an earlier version, we would highly recommend to not upgrade yet. Look online -- Microsoft really broke audio in Windows 10 and all audio manufacturers are scrambling to get it working again. It's generally not recommended to switch to the new OS for at least 6 months.
Doesn't anyone have a Mac in this thread? I thought Apple was more popular...

CEntranceBeen listening for about an hour and some change, I have a Mac, and I can give some quick non-audiophile impressions. Please keep in mind my gear is not high end at all, I am not an expert by any means, and these are my opinions.
Stuff used: Mac book pro running OS X 10.9.5 Phillips SHP9500 Fostex T50RP (Shure pads only but soon to be BMF modded) Same V- moda cable for both CEntrance Dacport Slim (duh) 3 foot long Samsung Galaxy micro usb/usb cable
SHP9500: The low gain setting sounds slightly clearer/ crisper than the Mac's standard jack port. It stays cool to the touch.
The high gain setting I absolutely noticed some snappier bass and clear separation compared to the standard Mac jack port. Also, these can be cranked to a crazy volume level of speaker like proportions now (probably a bad Idea I know). It is warm to the touch.
T50RP: Again, the low gain setting made a small improvement to sound quality but not enough for me to raise my eyebrows in surprise . It stays cool to the touch.
The high gain setting for the unmodded T50RP was a very clear improvement across the board, and I am very happy with what I hear from the Slim compared to both the basic port and the low gain setting in this mode. With live music I could clearly hear conversations that I was not able to make out clearly before, and I hear a "PFFF" sound from vocals when a P or F is forcefully sung into the microphone. It can get slightly warmer to the touch.
The Dacport Slim itself in the first hour or so: The brief instructions it comes with says that your mac should default audio to it. This was not the case for me. However, it was a very simple process to change that setting. These steps are mentioned in pamphlet. Also, when I swap headphones in and out the slim seems to freak out a bit, stop playing any sound, and then default back to my Mac's speakers until I fidget with it a bit. I'm hoping that the auto default and the swapping stuff is an issue with my USB cable being jiggly or something. The cable that is on the way from Massdrop should help figure it out.
As long as the soon to arrive cable fixes those two issues or I figure out what I am doing wrong, I am pretty happy with this purchase. I am sure with use (from me learning and it warming up) I will appreciate it even more.
Sorry for the rambling. I wanted to keep this brief but I got carried away. I hope this helped.
UPDATE: I have found another micro USB/ USB cable that I had squirreled away and all my issues have been solved by the cable switch. I am really enjoying this product. Also, low gain seems to have opened up more for my SHP 9500s, but I still prefer high gain for my Fostex headphones.

mhargrove28Hi mhargrove28, are you connecting direct or through a hub? If the latter, then try direct. Let me know.

CEntrance_DaveThanks for the response. I've tried through a hub and direct on my Win 8.1 machine. Had no success through the hub at all. Direct is when I sometimes get the garbled sound, sometimes no device found.
I just tried on my Win 10 machine at home on two different ports and get messages about the device malfunctioning. when I go to your control panel no device is found.
I have a Mac-mini and tried the DACport Slim with that and things work fine (though it only goes to 96kHz sample rate, not 192kHz.
So it appears to be a windows driver issue. Is there a debug version or anything else for me to try? You can email me (mark@lvalive.com)

CEntranceMacBook Pro (15", late 2013) running Mac OS X 10.10.5. Etymotic ER-4S (bought on Massdrop), hf3, and mc3. - First impression: device out of the box has some scuffs and what appears to have been handled by someone with greasy fingers. Not good. - Sound was not automatically switched to the Slim, but I had to do it in System Preferences-->Sound-->Output. The QSG says "Audio/MIDI Control Panel"... where is this? "Control Panel" is from the pre-OS X operating systems before 2001. - Cable that comes with it fits loosely in the port and device looses connection (i.e., disappears off the list for sound devices. - I changed the cable to a 6 inch Monster that fits tightly and the Slim stays connected even if moving it around. - Music: The Who, Forrest Gump, Elvis, Wilhelm Kempff's version of Moonlight Sonata, and a couple of Star Wars 7 trailers. - Worked with iTunes, Quicklook (select in Finder and press space), VLC, and QuickTime Player. - First tried gain on Low and the sound was similar to direct connection. I like the way the switched is recessed to prevent accidental changing. - Switched to High and the sound was impressive. I'm not familiar with audiophile words to use them, but I'll just say the volume can go higher than you want it to, clarity is all there, and bass is much improved (prob due to higher volume). I hear every sound clearly and everything is much more pleasurable to listen to. - When there's nothing playing, there is dead silence. This is the way it should be. - The volume control is easy to operate with one hand. There is just one speaker icon next on one side of the control to let you know it's the volume control. I kept forgetting which way to turn louder so I wish the lettering next to the control to make it obvious. - The Slim does get pretty warm, but I guess it's ok. Might be nice feature for a cold day. - I connected directly to the computer's USB port. I'll try a hub later, even though it's not recommended.
