Mine arrived yesterday -- I appear to be one of the lucky ones, it worked first time on my PC at home (ASUS Z97-A motherboard, connected directly to either USB2 or USB3 ports, with a microUSB cable from a Kobo or something); also works first time on newish macbook pro.
(gain on high, and, yes, it gets a bit warm, and it can be _very_ loud if you accidentally set the volume too high; anyone testing theirs for the first time, make sure you turn the volume dial all the way _towards_ the icon before you play anything, that'll set it as quietest which is the safe way to go)
Audio testing; using Soundmagic HP100 headphones, compared to onboard audio on the macbook -- everything is clearer. Vocals / midrange seem to be the most noticeable improvement I can understand the lyrics on Lyrics Born's "do that there (young einstein hoo-haa mix)" right away without having to strain, Buck 65's voice on "Wicked and Weird" is more detectably raspy, the guitars at the start of Journey of the Sorcerer are more "real"-feeling.
Using other headphones (compared to a hotaudio dac destroyer rather than onboard audio, on the PC), it's more subtle, but in general they seem to make the headphones do what they do well, better; AKG K181DJs from a previous drop here have a more rounded-feeling bass, the Philips SHP9500 (from another drop) are more spacious.
So, I guess I agree with what other people have said -- if it works for you, you should be very happy with it.
