Does this dac/amp hiss with very sensitive and low impedance IEMs (125db, 16ohm) like my Sennheiser IE 80s?

MaestroAtaMine does. You can also see some reports of it on reddit and the head-fi thread. Most of my stuff is 32Ohm(SHP9500, Piston 3, K553), and I have some JLab J4s which I believe are 16Ohm. Interestingly enough the noise does not scale up with the volume knob, but only with the gain switch.
This relatively high noise floor is one of my only major complaints about this device though.
I have been fiddling around with solutions, one of which is picking up a cable like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/172052856713? and reducing the volume via the cable until the hissing is no longer audible, and then turning up the volume on the Slim itself.
Unfortunately it doesn't seem that there are any higher-quality cables, and putting such a thin, cheap wire in line with my headphones seems wrong.

SomeTechNoobI have to agree with this. I do hear noise with my IEMs, such as my Piston 3. Honestly my brain filters it out quickly even if there is nothing playing, but yes, it is there. I have also read of complaints of hissing with extremely sensitive IEMs on the head fi forum, such as from certain Shure models. There is also claims that the original dacport did not have hissing issues on the same IEMs.
If there are no issues with the wire you are using and the reason is feels wrong is because it costs/looks/feels cheap, you can always paint it gold and trick yourself to think it costs 10k dollars. That might make things magically sound better! ; )
U-3CWith powerful amps there is always the dilemma - more power means more noise. We've given Slim more power while the noise was kept about the same as the Classic. The noise is only a couple of dB higher, but for many people that happens at the threshold of hearing, so they notice it. Since the release of the Slim we have made considerable improvements with DACportable and brought the noise down to even below DACport Classic. DACportable is more money though, so it's natural that has an performance edge.

CEntranceGood to hear that! Glad that you have improved on the DacPortable. : )
I mainly use the Slim with my Q701 headphones. No noise from them.
I'm glad the DacPort Slim has been doing so well. I'm honestly quite surprised that they are dropped again and again on Massdrop. I hope the other models are successful as well.
: )
(I'm currently staring at your Mixerface. Best of luck with it!)
