Could I plug this into my phone directly?

gstrand99This is a tough question as it depends on your phone. An iPhone will require a Camera Connection Kit and maybe a passive usb hub (they might freak out if it draws too much power). The new Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter might work, too. Just keep in mind that Apple stuff is not cheap and cable clutter will be an issue.
On Android, it's a mixed bag. You need hardware and software support for usb otg and usb audio. The cables are cheap. You can get one for one dollar on eBay, or pay a bit more for shorter, right Angled ones for convenience. However, some devices simply do not support usb otg. Just to give you an idea of how complicated it is, my Samsung Galaxy tab 3 10.1" supports usb otg naively. The 7" model does not. This is a hardware implementation, if I did my research correctly, so it cannot be bypassed. Then there is the software side. My tab 3 does not allow me to connect directly to the DACport Slim because it draws too much power. You can use a passive usb hub to bypass that. I use a usb otg y cable to provide external power. When I updated my tab to Cyanogenmod 13, usb otg is supported, but usb audio does not work even though it can. One of the devs responded that s/he will look into it. Again, this is completely dependent on what phone and what flavour of Android you use. On the Galaxy S3 with the default firmware that comes with it, everything works perfectly fine. No issues or power limitations. Just plug and play.
However, it drains the battery pretty fast so you might want an external battery. Welcome to Class A.
