(wish i could search comment threads and not ask a question that's probably been asked before)
I have a Schiit Fulla. It's garbage. Regardless of how good the sound quality is, it picks up every electronic signal within 10 feet and is constantly glitching, crackling, full of usb noise and nearby transmissions. The volume knob is scratchy and horrible. The aluminum casing is sharp and cheap. I simply want to stop dealing with that. If I replace it with the CEntrance DACport Slim, am I getting equal to or better sound quality, without the QC issues, or taking a step down?

octavecatI believe Z Reviews (Youtube channel, he's on MassDrop as ZeoPantera) compares them both, with him liking the DACport slim more. Just search Z reviews dacport slim.

octavecatFrom what our customers tell us, DACport Slim is not going to disappoint. The digital pot won't ever make a scratching noise. RF isolation is superb. And, as you can see by the 2500 comments and counting, we stand by our products.

CEntranceI use the DACport Slim with the AKG K7xx and they are amazing. I was using the Asus Xonar D2PM (internal add-on card) before,. Now with the Dacport Slim music and Blu-rays sound so clean compared to my internal card. Well worth the money.

Yes. I saw 2499 comments and felt compelled to write the 2500th ;)
It is an interesting idea to mod the Slim into a DACport HD for $99, giving it 384kHz, DSD and lower noise. I think we would be open to that.
Any takers?

CEntranceI live in Germany, but if I was back home in the States I would love a little extra power. I don't do DSD or 384khz, but lower noise and more power is a win win in my book.

CEntranceSo would your Slim basically be replaced with just a HD, or HD + low gain/noise mod?

SomeTechNoobSince HD does have more gain and less noise, we are in fact talking about effectively getting an HD. That's the idea at the moment. We are collecting feedback. Great time to give us your thoughts.

CEntranceHey Michael, saw your indiegogo update on the how the DACportable is going. Glad to see positive first impressions and how everything is moving along! I jumped on the $199 special last month before you started shipping. In your update, you mentioned the next shipment you are arranging that "should contain enough units to allow us to fulfill the balance of the campaign." I was wondering if that included the massdrop special edition, and if not what the timeline is looking like for those of us you grabbed it?

Thanks so much, @U-3C. I did consider the Origen+, but it seems people have equal complaints with that thing as well, especially around the volume knob. I'd rather have a good budget dac with fewer features and no QA issues than a good budget dac with more features and more QA issues. Plus I want something I can bring on a plane.

CEntranceThat would basically mean purchasing a HD at regular price. I really do like the ~$100 price point, but jumping to $200 for the sake of a pocketable unit seems a bit steep considering the amount of very popular desktop units at a similar price.
tbh I think enough people have been able to easily hear the noise floor on the slim. I think an overall new revision should come default on the units, or perhaps have gain options when ordering, similar to something like an O2+ODAC combo.

Thanks again, you've made a huge difference in this thread for me. I am getting the Slim offered here and joined the drop. I have a ton of features on my Fireface 800 DAC @ home, but it's bound to a studio setup and i'm happy with that. I think what I mean is that more features are great but only if they come from a place of quality, and since the threads I read about the Origen showed some complaints about quality, it's not worth it. That was really the whole issue with the Schiit for me — the sound was great but the quality is abysmal.

CEntranceBe honest, the only reason that keeps me from pressing the "JOIN DROP" button is the noise floor on Slim. If you can solve the problem by modding the Slim into a DACport HD for $99, I would definitely join, immediately! Thanks for considering it.

rookie007Dacport HD is already on Amazon for $199. Why would you pay for Slim and then upgrade? Why not buy from Amazon and get it faster on your doorsteps. That is what I was trying to tell in the previous post. If I need DSD and 32bit I would have gone for HD why buy Slim? But if they would still offer Dacportable for $199 that is worth the upgrade.

indi_guyI don't live in US. Tbh, I don't really care about DSD stuff. I just hope they can lower the noise floor on slim so that it can be more versatile. One of the reasons why I need an external dac/amp is because I get high noise from my laptop.

CEntranceThat's actually interesting. From what I gather, the mod we're talking about is actually two different things combined. A software mod to enable the DSD and 384kHz support already possible with the Slim's hardware (and standard on the HD), and a hardware mod to achieve a noise floor similar to the new DACportable. Wouldn't that technically be creating a product different from any of the three existing ones? A DACport with the capabilities of the HD with even better noise floor at around the same price as a standard HD? Honestly, I'd be equally interested in a pure software upgrade. I mainly use higher impedance/lower sensitivity cans so I'm not too concerned about noise, but it would be cool to be able to pay y'all some money to download new firmware should I ever decide to get into DSD in the future. Seems like a pure software mod would give all these Massdrop-ers a motive to upgrade their existing Slims and stay within the CEntrance family when they may have gone elsewhere if they had to replace their hardware outright or send theirs in for physical changes. (none of this is to say that the physical noise floor mod isn't also a good idea, as I'm sure there's a market for both.)

My understanding, and I too may be mistaken, is that the HD and the Slim have identical physical guts and differ only in software. If that is the case, I don't see how it would be possible for the HD to have a different noise floor than the Slim and certainly not how it would be possible to change the noise floor with software. Maybe I got mixed up when somebody started talking about reducing the low gain setting. Either way, I'm getting the Slim for the sake of having an epic-value dac/amp for portable use (library, traveling with a laptop, etc.) as I don't currently have any DSD or anything higher than 192kHz FLAC in my collection. I just like the idea of being able to enable DSD playback in the future without replacing the whole device or having to send it anywhere for additional noise or gain alterations.

Hm. Whatever turns out to be the case, I'm extremely excited to play with my Slim as is. I'm curious to see how it stacks up against my Little Dot MKII in terms of sound signature.

CEntranceWait, can you please confirm that HD indeed has lower noise floor? 'Cause you didn't mention that anywhere, your own product page lists a handful of specs separately for HD and Slim, but only gives one noise floor number.
I was about to comment on how I can hear nothing even at max volume with my HD, in the event that HD does have lower noise I better keep my mouse away from the reply button :P

btbtbtmakiThe default firmware is 026. You can request for a beta firmware 029 which fixed sleep issues on Windows 10. If you are not using Win10, then I would recommend to wait for official firmware release. If you do get the firmware, it is an exe file. You run it while dacport slim is connected. Once it.complete, unplug the dacport slim and connect back. You should not have any issue with dacport slim after that.
