Audio cable engineering is very interesting, and a subject of deep theoretical research into the field of electrical physics. There are many different strategies used to achieve many different desirable effects used by high-end cable manufacturers. When you are more knowledgeable about the topic, you can learn to judge cables based on the technology, materials and construction used.
For example, I can analyze these CEntrance cables this way: they don't use OFC or OCC copper, and aren't cryo-treated. That means they will produce normal amounts of self-noise caused by electrons jumping across copper crystal boundaries. The connectors have not been treated with any special technology or plating materials, although gold isn't bad. The key design factor in these cables seems to be its multi-layer conductor technology which uses the skin effect phenomena where lower frequencies tend to travel through the center and higher frequencies tend to travel though the outer edges of a conductor.

GUTBSure, you can judge cables based on the technology, materials and construction used, but if it doesn't add to your listening experience what are you actually paying for, bragging rights? It's easy to fall into the losing game of diminishing returns if you're chasing the next 'cable of the week'. Unless you have the acuity of the ear of God you'll be fine with most economy cables.

CMSgt_BoThe difference cables make can be very significant. I know Reddit thinks otherwise, but there aren't any worse places to get audio advice from.

dannymcsThat thread you linked is just a stream of cackling hyenas -- the usual collection of poor have-nothing students who have never heard high-end audio in their lives posting about things they have no knowledge of.

GUTBOf course I have, or I wouldn't have made the statements I've made. I've brought many cables home over the years and done A B comparisons against my cables/wires on my reference system. I've never seen a big enough difference to compel me to ditch my tried and true 20 year old set of cables/wires.

GUTBDid you check the next page where they did a teardown and it's literally just a really short quarter inch extender?

There's the tear down images mentioned...
Quote from the poster "A male stereo 1/4 inch jack and a female stereo mini jack with three wires connecting them together. The female jack was coated in glue and had a little bit of glassy sand stuck to it. Wrapped around the sticky mess was three pieces of foil which were attached to the wires. There you go... basically a plain old plug extender with some sand and glue and foil shoved into it. "
Keep in mind, this is also a quote from someone else in that same thread before the teardown. " This device gives a major improvement to my systems sound. Soundstage detail is improved. Images are precisely placed. Harmonic textures are more clearly heard. I do  not hear any added brightness to the system. Instead the music is more flowing with a sense of ease and improved transmitted emotion. "
You can't trust subjective opinions too much.

GUTBNope. Not really. I work with all PhD antenna engineers and the signal loss is so neglible in a basic cable that human ears will never detect a difference. if you want to be the audiophile that lies and spends ridiculous amounts of money just to say they have the best, be my guess but you're totally wasting your money.

GUTBEver seen frequency response diagrams with various cables on audio equipment? The only variable cable build influences from a pragmatic point of view is impedance (to a practically inaudible degree), and this has a linear effect all across the spectrum. Considering everyone who would even consider buying such a cable has amps in their setup it couldnt be more of a useless money sink to buy "premium" cables.

St0rmr3v3ng3This statement outs you as someone who has never heard high end audio. Food for thought: electrical measurements measure electrical properties; sound is not electrical.

richard.1.bradshawWhile obviously there are simple mechanical electrical factors in cables, the actual physics involved is experimental and not fully understood. The physics is an area of research and discovery, the enginneering is the realm of dogma and very little understanding. Also: your statement outs you as someone who has never heard high end audio.

GUTBYour statement outs you as someone who has no grasp of basic physics. How do drivers produce sound? What is flowing through the coil and oscillating the membrane to produce the waves our ears interpret as sound? Fairy magic dust? Lidocaine? Hot chocolate? No, everyone knows it's an electrical current. Back to middle school with you.

St0rmr3v3ng3You keep outing yourself as someone who has never heard high-end audio. If you had heard high-end audio, you'd be more concerned with researching how to achieve greater heights in your reference system. But of course, I know you aren't interested in high end audio. I know you are more into class warfare. Sound is air pressure differentials. Our sense of audio are these vibrations stimulating our various audio reception mechanisms and the processing of the signals that goes on inside our minds. We know a lot about how this works, but there is still MUCH we don't know.
Go to a local high-end dealer (try not to look like a poor student when doing so), and let them sit you down in front of their $75k system -- be absolutely devastated by your world view being destroyed, and then begin a new life as an audiophile.

GUTBUmmmm. Actually the physics are very well understood.
Resistance=pl/A
Power times length divided by the area equals the resistance.
All Speaker cables have electrical resistance. Let's use 16 gauge wire for example. The math is easy on this one. Once you do the math, the resistance is about 4 ohms per 1000 ft. Since there are two wires in a speaker cable, the total resistance for a 1000 ft. run would be 8 ohms. So, a 1000 ft. run of  cable connected to a typical 8-ohm speaker would deliver only 50% of the incoming voltage (to the speaker, a huge loss of a about 50% power).  A typical run of 10 ft. in your living room, the voltage loss would be only 0.5%, and completely inaudible. An eight foot run is even less... I know you audiophiles want 4k resolution for your ears but unfortunately it's different than your eyes. Yes, buy FLAC and lossless files. Yes, buy high quality speakers. Yes, buy a high quality source with an amazing DAC. Yes, buy a high quality amplifier. Yes, buy decent cabling. 14 gauge at the max. No, don't spent $130 for cables that won't make any difference whatsoever. If you buy these and hear a difference, it's the placebo effect unless you used really crappy 18 gauge wire for your amazing hifi setup....which I doubt. Read the description carefully. It talks all about the high quality of it's making but will not make any claim to sounding better. You know why? Because that would be fraud,

GUTBLol. There is so much we don't know but unfortunately known of those questions have any relationship to speaker wire lmao. Seriously, the technology was invented in 1876. It's a 140 years old. There is so much research in acoustics, active noise cancelling and signal processing but non in speaker cable. Ever wonder why headphones are usually 18-14 guage lol... ever wonder why the leaders in audio innovation aren't investing in wire technology lol... no one ever goes to a live performance and says "i wonder what cables they are using?" It's because it doesn't matter. I'm sorry you wasted your money. That sucks.. just read some more and educate yourself.

GUTBAnd this is why every sensible person takes a huge bow around self proclaimed "Audiophiles". When you cant prove the superiority of the stuff you claim being better with any hard evidence whatsoever, why should anyone give your claims any honour?
At the end if you wanna see your cult shattered, just buy a couple of normal and premium cables and ask a friend to wire them up to a pair of headphones while you are blindfolded. Take a dozen or more listening tests and see yourself failing to hear the premiumness of those"premium" cables.
Double blind tests - debunking pseudoscience like homeopathy, magical stones, bio resonances and other quackery since 1835 :)
