Does anyone know if the chord mojo is an upgrade from an iPhone 7 and Fiio E12 streaming Tidal as I came across the following post below recently: ------------------------- Roybenz said: ↑ Anyone tried comparison between mojo and iphone 7 or newer ipad? I can't seem to spot much difference. The mojo seems a little darker in some tracks. Using tidal hifi. Anyone know anything about general sound quality output from iphone/ipad/imac? +1
My mojo sounds great with every source I’ve tried it with, but I can’t tell ANY difference when using it with my iPad 10.5 vs. straight out of the iPad headphone jack. I’m not sure if this means the Mojo is providing poorer quality via the iPad, or it’s just that the iPad has a really good dac of its own. I’m running iOS 11 beta 2, but I get the same result via my iPhone 7 Plus on iOS 10.3.3. I’ve listened with Elears, TH-X00, and HD600s, same results on all of them. Tidal, Pandora, and local Apple lossless files via the Apple Music app...same issue.
The only difference I can think of is that the connection to the iPad/iPhone is via the Camera Connection Kit adapter and lightening port, where all other connections are through usb or optical. Not sure if it is an issue on the Apple side, the cable connection, or something in the Mojo. Frustrating, as I bought the Mojo to enhance my iPad music while not in front of my PC.

Shureboth ios and android will pre process the sound whether it's from the analog (3.5mm) or digital (usb/lightning) output.
so what happen is when you feed a pre processed clean sound to mojo it loses all the details (not bit perfect) and hence the mojo could not reproduce something that is missing.
you can test this by looking at the sampling rate on mojo. it will always be at the highest the device upsampled to and not the actual bit rate.
windows has like wasapi drivers for bit perfect digital output and android has paid apps to do it but the catch is you cant play offline tidal on the android apps.
as of now (2017) any android based dap with digital output will also inherit the same android feature/ issue.
there are some source code for custom rom but it has to be build manually and still at experimental stage.
bit perfect sound bypassing the dac in both (ios and android) will actually sound terrible.
if you look around, everyone is actually finding for a way to get mobile devices (iphone, ipod, ipad, androids phones and dap) to output bit perfect offline tidal songs.
the best bet right now is probably to use poly via wifi, airplay or aptx HD. (not sure if tidal supports wifi like spotify and i think poly is probably not aptx hd)
normally if you use the analog output (3.5 mm) or some adapters to 3.5mm into a dacamp. the dacamp will only use the amp part to boost the signal processed by iphone7. (mojo or any dac does not work this way hence it does not have like a 3.5mm analog input)
basically mojo will only reach its true potential when played from a dap that does not use ios or android. this means that the mojo will sound alot better from ripped high definition audio compared to streamed hd audio from tidal as of (2017)...
normally what happen is any android or ios device output to mojo via usb will get processed twice (once by the source system and once by mojo) with no amp (mojo has no amp or does not amplify the sound like a normal amp) and this is probably why sometimes people say mojo actually sounds like source device or it sounded weird. (windows and mac will also need to output in bit perfect in order for mojo to process the signal properly)
other dacamp will probably not get affected by the not bit perfect output because of the amp part actually adds colors and flavours where mojo probably only adds a little warmness compared to the first hugo which is purely neutral.

gunwalei have a question like what if i using DAP ( AK, Fiio,... ) as a transport and i connect mojo by Coax or Optical cable so there is nothing wrong here right ?? I still consider to use Poly which replace these DAPs, besides that i believe each DAP will give a different sound ?!

heo44yup optical and coax will work fine. i think the designer said something like he prefers the optical input the most.
tidal doesnt support mqa for its mobile version yet so it probably wont go beyond cd quality.
if i am not wrong, optical cable has different bands some can only all the way up till 192khz while some only up till 96khz.
i think every dap theoritically should produce the same sound via optical using mojo.

gunwaleyeah, as far as i concerned the CD ripped is still the best and I prefer to use Coax cable :D 'cause i owned this but the problem is not convenience to carry around it's quite heavy and complicated. If i had money, i would buy Poly and use my iphone as UI.

gunwaleThank you so much! I really appreciate it. Take care.
gunwaledepending on the optical implementation it can have trouble locking on to a 192khz signal so many manufacturers chose to limit the input/output to 96khz. This gave rise to the myth that an optical connection can't physically handle a sampling frequency greater than 96khz. I run bit-perfect 192khz out from JRiver into a USB to optical converter and then into my DAC (my DAC's usb is limited to 96khz input but optical/coax are valid through 192khz). All mobile OS's perform conversions to signals above 48kHz unless they can boot outside of the native android/ios environment or an app that bypasses all the internal signal processing.
