The Colorfly C3 sounds great, but it has an unfinished, "beta stage" feel to its software. I think that is unacceptable. If you can tolerate the menu typos, the weird UI, the popping and clicking between tracks, and the sluggishness, then it is a NICE-sounding audio player that gets out of the way due to its simplicity. There is something about its sound that is totally different from my other DACs and headphone amps. I would describe its sound quality as "lonely", "super clean", "sharp", and "cold". There is nothing behind the sounds. I guess that's what people refer to as a "black background".
The SABRE9018C2M SABRE32 on my V10 sounds "bigger" and "warmer", but it lacks the "snappiness" of the C3's sound, and also sounds too close for comfort compared to the V10's MSM8992 audio. I'm not a DAC head, and I'm the first to admit, "this does not sound anything special" if I was expecting audio bliss from a product...but the C3 makes me smile, even more because it is so affordable. It is my favorite audio gadget, especially for what I paid here on MD. I'm considering the C4. God bless you!
PS: The volume goes to 40 and at 25, it is perfect for me at home on my Audio-Technica ATH-M70x, Technics RP-DH1250-S and Sennheiser HD 239 and HD 598 SE. I can enjoy my Beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro 250 comfortably if I set the volume to 33-35 depending on the track. I leave the EQ on Normal most of the time, but I have to admit I really enjoy how it sounds on Jazz.
Would not recommend. The UI is stupidly hard to get the hang of and folders are arranged by date added rather than any sort of sensible ordering. It has taken far longer than it should have to set up an SD card for it and even then the C3 says "No File" when I select the SD card in the menu. I went to update firmware and it doesn't give instructions on how to apply the firmware though it does say" Note: Please read the upgrade instructions, you must have to ensure that the PSU cannot be interrupted during the update process." though said instructions are nonexistent. Just everything about this has been a giant pain in the keester. Sounds nice though, I will give it that. But I would suggest looking at something in Fiio's range of models over the Colorfly C3.
Can someone explain to me why some people would buy digital audio players.I just use dac/amps with my headphones on my desktop at home. But who are digital audio players intended for? When i go out i usually just play music from my HTC 10 on spotify listening with bose earphones since i use the transit alot and it just gets too loud with the bose i can use the noise cancel
thx for replying.I always didn't know why would people got for DAPs but now i know
Should I get this or FiiO X1? I listen to mostly ambient and jazz 16/44 FLAC's with Shure 215 IEM's, Shure 240's and Skullcandy Method's.

Fiio M3 has been working great for me, price is the same.
I got the last drop, and mine is no longer doing it for me. Cant hold a charge, the computer wont recognize it, and it wont charge from the wall anymore. I guess that's what you get for paying 50$! I tried, i lost, we move on.. move onto a FIIO x2 2nd gen :p

TF Cards are basically SD cards, for storage operations, like here, they work exactly the same.

Will this need an amplifier for Takstar Pro 80s?
I finally got my C3 to play the first album I uploaded. My problem now is how to make English the preferred language. When I enter the menu, most everything comes up in Asian characters. I can't figure how to get back to English. Any ideas?
c3 versus lg hifi plus?

I'm new to dad amplifiers so i would like to know if someone knows something about the quality of the lg hi fi module is worth the buy..to avoid to go around with two devices...
maltese27
I'm new to this too. I've never used any other DAPs before, none of real quality. But I have tested the V20 HiFi Quad DAC for a bit, comparing it directly to my G4 and I liked what I heard. I would like to know if it's worth it to get a DAP if one already has the V20.
(wow this thread went to Sht)
Uh it says "support for 64GB MicroSD" Can I not use my 128gb MicroSD with this? plenty of devices say "Up to 32GB" but you can easily pop a 64gb in there and have no issues, just a formatting issue, easily bypassed.
TL;DR - 128GB MircoSD works too?
HyeVltg3
An earlier comment somewhere in this mess did mention that he got his 128gb card to work with his C3. I figure this is affordable enough to risk it and see what happens. Def couldn't survive on 64gb.
it is an amazing device which would beat many expensive DAPs and forget about phones, etc. it is also amazingly solidly build, feels pleasant in your hand and works long time on one charge. dynamics, attack, soundstage - everything is impressive. only feature I would appreciate is memory of the last track played, still i could leave with it and forgive it for the beautiful sound of this little nifty device. please do it again Massdrop!

How long would it take to ship from your warehouse to within the US?
After playing with it for a few weeks.. I must say i love how it sound.. especially its wide soundstage. If you looking for a good sound, maybe C3 is for you. But if you looking for a player with snappy UI.. get something else, this C3 is not for you. Before commit, do read reviews. At least you know, what is you are getting.
Will this device allow me to play all my music?

Dude, Village People is entry-level. 2nd level is Sparks, and only the chosen may ascend to the 3rd level, Hercules & Love Affair.

Why would you need this if you had a phone? [moderated]

bit late but i use ath m50x headphones :P

Well, I use Audio Technica AD900X, much more advanced cans which can reproduce sound VERY accurately, so all the shit coming from a phone is clearly audible. But more importantly, the true beauty of my FLAC collection is audible too :) This gizmo helped me a lot, but I can't say it has good build quality. It was always acting weird since I bought it, I had to use the reset hole several times, and after half a year its buttons died. The sound quality was amazing for the price, but when it broke I upgraded to FiiO E17K and I don't regret. It definitely sounds much nicer, but costs 3 times more, too.
WOW!!!! I hear some of my favorite tune in a whole new light.
C3 is best choice for 44.1 file user. Suprise performance.
I´ve had it for a month or so and i´m very happy with it.. it sounds, looks and feels great. the simple ui is the only issue wich i can live with for a 50 dollar player.. the varm sound signature pairs well with the somewhat bright HE 350´s.. also drives them to pretty loud levels. Nice portable combo for 150 usd plus whatever shipping. Also pairs well with shp9500´s. It don´t have the power to drive higher ohm headphones though, at least not to the volume levels i´m used to.. but up to 100 ohm they do fine after that i need an amp. I use the amp on my jds labs c5d and they combo good togheter in sound but not in size. People on head-fi seems to like the 100 euro C&C BH2 portable amp combo. http://www.shenzhenaudio.com/c-c-bh2-portable-headphone-amplifier-battery-amplifier.html http://www.head-fi.org/products/c-c-bh-portable-headphone-amp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i8FfTRISu

A drop for this amp i think is in order ^^
UPDATE: It was fun the month it lasted .. my colorfly just died today RIP. Was listening when it just shutoff and never came back to life.

Was it set up as the video shows? Maybe it over heated?
I also encountered the same issue with buttons responding erratically. Massdrop suggested I send pictures to prove it was responding this way. I gave up
I got mine a few days ago (a day early even!) and I'm quite happy with my purchase! The sound quality is a real step up from my favorite ipod (2nd gen Nano), and it's powerful enough to drive my HD800 (not by much, but it gets the job done). I'm especially thrilled by the dynamic range it displays, I've never heard some tracks this way, and I love it.
I haven't had anything to complain about using the UI--a few nits to pick ("+" scrolls *down*???) but nothing major. Being forewarned about its nuances helped define my expectations, I simply don't ask it do do things like shuffle more than one folder, etc.
SlowCousinPete
Though I wouldn't complain about a usable "bass boost" eq setting. I think "Rock" sounds slightly better than "Normal" but all the other options are useless crap.
SlowCousinPete
Useless for you, godsend for others. Everyone has a different taste and the real goal of different EQs is to match as many preferences as possible. Rock preset matches your preference, that's good. Others don't, which is also good, because they match someone else's preference who doesn't like the rock preset.

Normally I'd think every business that cares about their profits would work hard on making the shipping cheaper and easier to the customer, but now I think Massdrop is doing the opposite. Are they too stupid to understand that customer's happiness = more profit?
I just found English version manual on the internet for the C3, for those who needs this please click link below: http://www.colorfly.eu/download/C3/userguide_eng_C3.pdf
Received my unit yesterday and I am quite happy with its sonic performance, especially for a little guy like this and certainly scores great on the value because of its low costs. Some people may not like the user interface but I have seen worst on more expensive players. While there is an old saying that " you get what you paid for " and in this case I think I got more than what I paid. Thumbs up for Massdrop on this purchase.
