surround sound headphones are not true surround sound, they use drivers to generate stereo sound from a surround sound signal. similar to what you can do with any pair of earbuds and spatial sound card or similar software. ideally, all games would have a headphones option that does natively this like a few games do already, but essentially there's no point in putting 7 speakers and a subwoofer inside a headset when the net result would be far worse for far more money.

Some also have vibration motors/ etc for added depth/impact to the low notes. I have a $25 Chinese one that comes in a box that looks like a razer knockoff headset that does all that and outdoes every other $50-250 headset I've ever had. it even sounds better on a game with the headphones option vs the virtual surround drivers in my h1 gaming because the virtual surround drivers seem to emulate a "room" sometimes adding some kind of reverb or other effects that aren't really there. I have yet to find a gaming headset in the $50-250 range that outdoes my shitty looking (nerf toy styling) $25 headset.. the only on-ear headphones I have that beat them in audio fidelity are the no longer made, the Marshall Amp brand monitor headphones. audio technica and sennheiser don't come close under $250, I also can't beat the microphone quality which is insanely good for a little stumpy on ear mic bulge without taking out a snowball or sony m10 portable recorder.
I'm honestly scared to buy anything on here that ISN'T a Chinese brand now because the quality on the good ones is insane for 1/10th the price.
