Hey all, this is Ryan from the BlasterX team. I can assure you...these are our own design and tuning. We've designed the BlasterX H5 and H7 to have a distinct sound signature and profile all of our own.
The fact that the H5 / H7 shares a similar yoke headband seems to send people down the line that this is just another OEM headset. The yoke headband is based on a tried and true design that fits one of the core components when we built the BlasterX line. Durability. It also provides a great amount of comfort without having to have a massive amount of clamping force on the head. There's other advantages to the design as well such as durability of the cabling and wiring from one side to the other, etc.
Comfort / Durability and Audio quality are what we're hanging our hat on with these models.
We've been letting them speak for themselves with the press and at the gaming shows we've been attending. We know there's a LOT of choices out there for headsets...especially when you bring mod-mics and using a great pair of headphones with a mod-mic into the mix.
Our goal was to give the best of both worlds in one clear-cut solution.
Coming from the audio enthusiast angle, we know Massdrop members know their stuff. We wouldn't bother putting the H5 up as a drop if we didn't feel it would meet the tough critics here. We're confident those that get these will hear and feel the immediate difference when compared to some of the others that they share similarities with. The press certainly has to date as has the show-goers who've had a chance to wear them at Gamescom, TwitchCon, Dreamhack, etc.

DigitalRonynwon't say anything until I hear the headset myself, but to be honest, existing video reviews of H5 already shown that the microphone on H5 is awful in terms of sound quality :(
kaellarThere's quite a considerable number of reviews commenting on how clear the mic quality is. Just like audio playback, there are different preferences for voice capture. Audio is always a tricky business since personal preference plays a tremendous amount into what is "good" or "bad". With analog you also are at the mercy of exactly WHAT you are connecting the headset to as well.

DigitalRonynI must ask for an excuse, 'awful' is pretty strong word and I shouldn't have used it. I'm not nitpicking or trying to disrespect your products, I've been owning CAL! for like 5 years now for myself and had some old and beloved Audigy sound cards years ago. And I have no doubt playback quality of H5 is great for its price which is true for most of your headsets and headphones. Its just mic clarity that I heard in video reviews that is mediocre at best. The mic is probably OK for a gaming headset anyway, but it is most likely not on par with the headset's playback quality which frustrates me a little bit.

kaellarThe mic sounds inline with other headsets in this price range and this form factor, that is to say: average at best. Replacing the mic with a V-Moda sounds much better

tehbizzThat's what I'm talking about. If the mic was similar to v-moda boompro in quality, I'd be one of the first happy owners of H5. But it's easier to get something like philips 9500 + v-moda mic for almost the same price if you're about getting as much quality as possible for ya money.
