Hey guys i see there is this drop for the E5 and another drop currently going on for the Sound Blaster ZxR... Any suggestions on which I should purchase for my desktop gaming rig? I can't decide if the benefits of having Bluetooth and portability from the E5 are worth assumed lesser performance and software features of the ZxR. Any suggestions would help! I use Logitech Z623 speakers and ATH M50s for headphones.
Hi HearingISeeing,
I can't tell you from experience how the two compare, but I can tell you that getting this DAC/Amp (actually so much more... it really is a mixture of fine quality audiophile gear and computer audio swiss army knife) along with an excellent gaming headset has completely changed the way I experience both my games and my music. I have paired my E5 with the Sennheiser GAME ONE headset, and now not only can I hear when someone is creeping up behind me in game, but I can actually pinpoint the location from which his footsteps are coming. I also use this with my laptop from time to time, and as a DAC/Amp for my iPod Touch when I'm listening to music with my Sennheiser HD 650s (Tidal HiFi).
I have not been able to find anything bad to say about it. It is an amazing peice of kit, and as long as I take good care of it and my headset, I don't see myself ever getting anything different for gaming.
TipsyMacScotchslurpenPC gaming? I wonder if this can be used with the Xbox One through the optical out port... I can't imagine it wouldn't be able to but I'm not sure about how I could pair this with a mic other than splitting the audio/mic from this unit into the controller...
RidevaDemocritusSorry, I don't own any gaming consoles, so I have no way to test this. I'm fairly sure you could get it hooked up to the xbox, but I am very doubtful that you would get virtual surround out of it. Who knows, though... I guess if you could have the xbox output 5.1 channel surround over optical, it might be possible, but this wasn't mentioned as a feature in the user manual, so I doubt that it is capable of positional audio from a console system.
TipsyMacScotchslurpenI'll let you know. I currently have an Astro Mixamp hooked up via optical to my Xbox and the sound is definitely directional. It's the first-gen so it's pretty old; I bought it for my 360 when Astro first announced the A40/Mixamp combo. I love it, for sure; it's a boon to FPS's especially. It also allows you to balance game/chat audio. For gaming it works really well.
That's the end of it though. It doesn't work well as a portable. It can be battery powered (4x AA's) but I'm trying to stay away from any type of battery solution. I even use my controllers wired now. I'm going to give this E5 a shot.
RidevaDemocritusEven if you don't get positional audio out of it with your xbox, I think it is still totally worth it as an amp/DAC combo for music playback from your phone, iPod Touch, or laptop/desktop computer if you have a decent pair of headphones. I love using it to get better sound quality out of my iPod Touch for my Sennheiser HD650s. It will even produce surprisingly Hi-Fi sounding music over AptX Bluetooth with the iPod. While my LG V10 is capable of driving my HD650s, the E5 can produce a much louder signal than the phone can if I don't mind the additional bulk.
When I'm planning to do any music listening or gaming on my laptop (heck, even movies get a much-needed quality boost), this thing is an absolute godsend! So, I can't imagine this not getting a lot of use unless you already have a bunch of amazing audiophile gear.
TipsyMacScotchslurpenI have exactly zero audiophile gear actually. The mixamp/astro a40 is as close as I get. I have a couple IEM's that are decent but nothing extra special. I'd love to get a nice set of cans, but one step at a time. I'm using some TFZ series 1's at work and my HTC One M7 is a little lacking. I'm excited to see how this works with them. This is going to be awesome... Thanks for your input!! I'll make sure to leave an update with my impressions.
