This looks extremely useless... whats the point?

ArmswieldWell, you might be unfamiliar with these things called computers, but they're kind of a big deal these days, and most of them need a 2-dimensional input of some sort. The ones that sit on a desktop usually have a "mouse" attached to it (not a REAL mouse, mind you! They'd run right away! And you wouldn't have to worry about the cat lying on the keyboard anymore, it would be chasing your mouse!) but some people have injuries or other medical conditions, or even just personal preferences, which make using a mouse unsatisfactory. Many such people prefer to use an input device which allows you to control a cursor on-screen without having to move their hands so much. The trackball is a wonderful option in those cases.
So you see, once you understand the context a little bit better, you can tell that these aren't useless at all!

DaedNice, a whole paragraph to make fun of somebody who was clueless. Well, if you guys want to pay over 100 dollars for a much less accurate and extremely cumbersome spinoff of a mouse, be my guest.

ArmswieldI'm sorry, was "This looks extremely useless... whats the point?" intended to be a sincere, earnest question? Because I have to say, it sounded like you we being a judgmental prick. Therefore, it seemed like being a sarcastic prick was an appropriate response.
And in that spirit, thanks for acquiescing to our purchase of these trackballs! I'm certain that your assessment of their accuracy and utility is much more authoritative than that of the people who use them professionally, and I, for one, really appreciate you allowing me to make my own mistakes.

ArmswieldTrackballs can be superior to mice for several reasons 1. It's stationary, so can be used in limited spaces 2. Requires less hand/wrist movement, which vastly reduces carpal tunnel and other repetitive stress injuries that can occur from long hours of computer use. 3. Many people find them to be a lot more accurate for certain tasks like graphics/CAD work.
With that being said, if you have never used one, a trackball can have a slightly frustrating learning curve, but once you get over it, you'll wonder why mice ever got so popular. In addition, even among trackball lovers there's the eternal debate over which type is better, thumb operated, or finger operated. Personally I cannot stand thumb operated trackballs.
