So, you know how at gun shows there's always at least one table selling cheap Chinese and Pakistani knives? You know how all the knives at those tabled are anodized all pretty, with designs of spider webs, skulls and whatnot? Those crappy knives that only exist to catch the attention of 12 year olds dragged there by their parents and the tactacool people who all claim to be ex-Army Rangers? This time, Massdrop is the table and these are the crap knives.

kshrubbYes. I have one as decoration in our game room. As such it should be called a replica, not a butterfly trainer just because it's got a blunt edge, and definitely not posted in the EDC community. I have a cheapo bottle opener bali that flips better than this thing. What's next for EDC? Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword wall hangers or cosplay props?

ObsidianAhuitzotlWho cares if it isn't great? People who are serious about balisongs will know that this isn't a high quality product and that it's mostly for decoration; it's totally fine to advertise it as a trainer bali, because it functions as such. And it's cheap.

That's much different than approaching a table with a long bearded poser behind it trying to sell you something he bulk ordered from China and telling you he used something just like it deep in the Vietnamese jungles to escape the North Vietnamese from capture. This time you are the uninformed poser vs Massdrop being honest about the description of a product you failed to read about. Noob.

Neblin7Calling me a noob is cute, since you don't seem to comprehend that with knives the word "practice" means it's good for training. A practice bali means that it flips well, like a real bali, and that one can learn skills with it that would transfer to a real balisong. This fantasy knife is incapable of that because of its unrealistic design and shoddy construction. "Practice" doesn't just mean "blunt edge". There are a billion "full tang carbon steel katanas" out there from China sold blunt as a butter knife but that doesn't make them iaito. Likewise, these cheap replicas are known for catrosphic failure when flipping. That's dangerous.
By all means, feel free to buy this knife and try to practice with. Then go buy a real bali trainer made by a legit company like Bear & Son or Benchmade. You'll realize how silly you're being. I've been collecting high end knives and flipping balisongs probably since before you were born. If you actually want to learn buy a legit trainer. If you want a paperweight to impress your buddies on Xbox Live then here a go and let the adults play with the real knives.

kshrubbThe argument as you last posted it I don't entirely disagree with. "Who cares if it looks good," is fine for a replica and those who know balisongs. But not everybody does, especially among the crowd this may attract. What gets me is the presentation that it's for training and that it's under the EDC group. Not everyone that buys it is gonna understand what it actually is. A knife like this used as a trainer consistently will either end up turning somebody off to flipping, develop really bad habits or possibly injure them if a pin breaks or it flips wrong due to loose tolerances.

kshrubbI concur again. Its a functionally deficient item in a catagory where pretty much everything preforms a function IRL. Knives cut, lighters make fire and flashlights let you see at night.
People have the right to do whatever they want. If people do stupid crap it's nobody's fault but theirs.
It still feels like a cheap facsimile of a bali is being flashed in front of us, as a shiny thing, when what we're hear for is sharp, cutty and pointy objects.
