rdodevThe ToEE and ToA are similar in playstyle to Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon, and Legend of Drizzt, with a few 5e concepts added (e.g., advantage/disadvantage). But mostly they mimic 4e in concept to keep all of the Adventure System boardgames compatable with each other.
Assault of the Giants is a completely different type of boardgame. It's based upon the themes of the "Storm King's Thunder" campaign setting from 5e, but doesn't utilize many (any?) of the RPG-specific rules from 4e or 5e. Think of it as more of the SKT campaign from the giants' perspective, in boardgame form.
All three are great games, if you like fantasy-themed board games.
Aron1Thanks for this. Haven't messed with Adventure System at all so wasn't sure if these were the original. ToEE, for example was a HUGE/multi-day dungeon to crawl, so was surprised they claim "60 minutes play time".
rdodevGotcha. ToEE and ToA (but not the first three) are developed as kind of "boardgame campaigns" where you play a "mission" that moves the story along a bit further. There are probably a dozen missions in each box, each taking probably 60-90 minutes.
This fills the niche for me for a quick "dungeon crawl" style session, without much potential for roleplaying. I use them when certain members of my gaming group can't make it, because this is pretty easy to pick up and play with whomever you have on hand.
