Danner's boots remain a staple of my hiking/camping checklists and these boots are no exception. Solid.

seedeeveeI don't know. I'm not sure how good WalMart is at divulging country of origin. Amazon isn't good at it either. For me that mec.ca site is a bit too expensive but one thing I can say about them is that they seem to always state the country of origin. I keep them bookmarked specifically for that reason. :-) ETA that when I said mec.ca is a bit too expensive, I may have misspoke. When I (in USA) visit mec.ca, I see prices in Canadian dollar. Converting to US dollar may (or may not) make their price competitive.

Not much a drop. You can buy these boots for the exact same price on line or even in person at REI where you can try them on in person.

I got a pair of these a few weeks back.. they are great boots. Based on online reviews stating they run a bit large, I purchased a half-size smaller than my normal size (11.5 wide, instead of 12 wide).. they fit me perfectly and didn't really require much of a break-in period at all. I don't know how they'd fare on really long hikes, but for kicking around town and a few miles here and there, they are very comfortable. My one real complaint is that there was a sticker on the insole of one of the boots that would not peel off completely, leaving a sticky residue. Whoever made the decision to place that $*^%# sticker there should be taken out back behind the Danner factory and beaten with a rubber hose! Otherwise, these seem like really well made boots, and they are probably the most comfortable out of the box that I've ever worn. I'm quite pleased with them. I'd be pretty hesitant to order them through MD without knowing how they will fit you, but if you can get your correct size narrowed down, this is an excellent deal.

Why a white sole on a boot?

Sneaker-like feel means there is little to no break-in period. Not the warmest boots if you're hoping to go out in the snow. They don't breathe very well in comparison to some other boots, but given the look and comfort I can manage.

Hello, I am just starting to get into hiking seriously and was wondering how do these compare against Garmont Mystic, Altra timps, lone peaks? Are there any other brands I should be looking at? I am looking for light shoes with good cushioning and ankle support. During long strenuous hikes my ankles are the first to give out then my knees. These boots look tempting because it looks like I can wear them to work but I am kinda put off by how heavy they are.

antseverywhereThis brand should provide a more robust life than the brands you mention. My dad has worn a couple pairs of these through everything you can imagine, and the second pair is still on the course of several years in. My feet are different so I wear another brand.

antseverywhereYou are comparing apples and oranges. The altras are zero drop ultra light running shoes that are great for hiking. These boots, although I have not held them in my hand, are hiking boots that cross over to leisure or travel wear but i wouldn't dream of running in them. they are likely to have a longer lasting sole and upper and will (probably) provide less groundfeel (i.e. more cushioning) from rocks, roots etc than trailrunners. If ankle height footwear is your thing they will provide some illusion of ankle support as well. They also provide a waterproof membrane which some also see as a positive. If you are comfortable with contemplating backpacking in altra's then these boots won't hinder you from a comfort or protection perspective.

Great boots for the city and light snow. Don't know about their modern day hiking credentials, however. I wear mine mostly in metropolitan areas and have noticed that the "waterproof" lining can get a little hot and hold moisture after usage. Therefore, these are every-other-day boots for me when walking to work in Philadelphia winter. A quick blast from a blow dryer works just as well as leaving them near a forced air heating vent overnight. One note on the finish options: the saddle leather looks great, but becomes very easily marred (say, if scuffed on curb or against rocks) and will show discoloration when wet thereafter. Regular leather upkeep is a must- but would highly recommend for comfort over flat, multi-mile cross city treks.
