Just joined the drop. Plan is to hook up my project elemental turntable to this and use my akg-k7xx headphones. Not sure how well this works as a phono preamp + amp.

yay-nayI just got thousand use it with the Akg 7xx. I rolled to a Sovtek 6as7g power tube and a rca 6SN7GT, they added a nice bit of warmth which I really enjoy and compliment the soundstage very well.
If you get a hum you may need yo pull the power tube and burn the small tube in for a while, I had no issues at all myself.

shreyas87The Darkvoice is not a phono preamp. If you hook this up to the turntable, the sound will be shrill. You need to use a phono preamp to get the RIAA equalization. The phono preamp is important for the overall sound, but you don't need to spend a bundle. I was using a $200 NAD, but I was unhappy with the sound, and bought a Bellari tube preamp for about $270 (my first toe into the tube world). There are many solid state preamps that would work fine for under $200, I think. Others may have more experience than I do with phono preamps.

shreyas87It doesn't. You will need a separate phono stage before going into the DV.

shreyas87Backed off, ad joined this one :- https://www.massdrop.com/buy/yaqin-ms23b-stereo-tube-phono-stage since this seems to be a proper phono stage. The actual problem seems to be the cartridge on my elemental (its an orthofon om5), and its too clinical. I am not very good at installing and balancing a new cartridge, so opting for a tube phono preamp.
As for the k7xx, they are awesome! my primary set and hooked up to a centrance dac amp.

shreyas87It's not an either or situation. You will still need a preamp and an amp after the Yaqin phono stage. The DV would handle the Yaqin very well. If you just use headphones you will be done, if you use the DV as a preamp in a separates hifi system you will need an amp for the DV to go into. You will still need to properly install and adjust the cartridge for tracking weight and anti skating with a phono stage.

shreyas87I always think a headphone amp as an integrated amplifier . The greater the signal in , the greater output out . If you want the best from your amplifier you will need to pre-amp it . but if you are going to use it as a phono pre-amp . I don't think you will be as satisfied . The signal out of a phono is minimal because it's just what the cart picks up . To understand what a turntable does it's simple. it's a motor spinning a platter and a cartridge stylus raking across a groove that goes straight into cable that goes to your system . No amplification, also no grounding and now you want to go straight into a headphone amp ? Out of curiosity I hooked up my Denon DP-59L into my Woo WA6se and hated it from a faint to an incredibly poor quality sound . Every snap, ground noise whine I heard it . Grounding it to the amp chassis helped but it still wasn't great. I think vinyl and headphone amps are not the best combo because every detail is magnified so you better have the best source . Through my McIntosh C2300 pre-amp it did a fair job . Yes you get true analog sound but you also get all the reasons why CD's replaced them . I use a Sony HAP Z1ES and haven't looked back.
