Just wondering if those with hum issues have been able to solve them? I have a power conditioner and a slew of NOS tubes waiting for my unit to get here. I'm hoping my mullard 6080 and kenrad vt-231 pair well with my hd6xx.

giomotoI have heard it takes sometimes 50 hours to eliminate hum. Also, replacing the 6as7 power tube with a Sylvania 6080wc NOS tube seems to have fixed the him issue with many people on other forums. Thanks for the reply btw. 😀

NateBSo that Ken Rad Vt-231 hums like crazy...bummer. But the other tubes I've rolled had no hum. I found a crazy good combination with a Tung Sol 7236 6as7 and a CBS 6sn7gtb...the bass is so good. Listened to Take the Power Back by Rage Against the Machine and my jaw dropped. 😎

NateBI ran the Ken rad for 60 hours, still hums. Other tubes dropped in an no hum. My power conditioner helps a ton. After plugging into a regular surge protector to test, my sylvania 6sn7wgta hummed. Plugged back into conditioner, no hum.

Yes! The DV can sound fantastic with the right tubes. I have been using Beyerdynamic DT 770 250 Ohm and DT 240, the same Sennheiser headphones as you, I will also start the burn-in process on the HD58X, and also the 1MORE Triple Driver headphones. I am waiting to receive a VT-231 tube and a Geshelli DAC.

NateBI've been using an SMSL M6 as my dac. Eventually im going to upgrade the dac, but need some time to save. My setup in my gaming and office pc is an Audio-gd NFB-11.28 and my Audeze LCD-2, so I need to save some money. This hobby is great, but my wallet and wife loathe it!
The funny thing is I prefer warm sound signature with a bass boost and neutral the rest of the way...the Sennheiser cans have those upper mids that can be harsh since I'm sensitive to spikes from 3 to 5 khz. The tubes basically save me from fatigue (the right tubes). If it wasn't for that, I would have had to sell my Sennheisers...something I really didn't want to do.

NateBSo many toys. I'm still interested in some top of the line stuff, but I got a great deal on these m1060c. Only paid $100. My buddy hated them. Southeastern Virginia, nothing...in fact I have to drive 40 minutes to get to an audiophile shop. About 3 1/2 hours into my Ken Rad burn in and still a bit of hum, but not as bad as when I first changed it out. Well I have about 7 hours of playing time on them and putting them down for 5 1/2 hours I see a marked improvement. Yes, you can tell they are a Sennheiser headphone. I live in Norfolk, VA, not far at all from your family. After running my DV for about 14 hours I had to let it cool down some, so I switched the HD 58Xs to my SMSL to continue the burn-in process. Monday afternoon I will check the cans and hopefully the will be burned-in. I will soon check on my VT-231 to see how much hum there is, when I last listened it was barely any hum. I can only say that the Tung Sol 6SN7 tubes to me are a great choice for the DV.

The P2 is the one I like the most, it is my "bedside" amp hooked up to my iPad along with an Advanced Sound Group Accessport, which actually has a built-in DAC/Amp, but allows me to charge my iPad, simultaneously. But don't get me wrong, when I take my mother to certain appointments I have either my B4 or B5 with me. I really like that tube sound. Take the 6AS7 driver tube out and let the preamp tube burn in. Some tubes loose their hum fast, others take longer. Don't have experience with the Kenrad, but the Mullard 6080 is a beautiful sounding tube. Lovely sound stage, a very good balance between the lows, mids and highs. The Mullard 6080 is currently my favorite tube between, a RCA 6080WA (in 2nd place), a GE JAN5998A (3rd) and a Sylvania 6AS7G. My preamp tube is an Ultron 6SN7GT. Also a great tube. Sound stage and separation of the instruments are sublime with the Ultron.

CurlycatI have been burning in without the power tube. It took 118 hours of burn-in for the Ken Rad to stop humming. Good call on the mullard 6080 as your observations are the same as mine. I recently got a Tung Sol 7236 which is great, but it seems more for higher gain needs. I have a GE 6as7ga, Sylvania 6080wc, RCA 6as7g, and the Mullard sounds so balanced...I keep going back to it.

NateBThat is awesome, I'll have to look at getting one.
The Raytheon arrived and has been burned in. It doesn't have a ton of bass, but the mids are crazy good. Treble can be a bit bright, but not overbearing. This tube is great with Jazz music. It is a little shouty with female vocals, but nice nonetheless.

Thanks for posting this. I think I am going to give the Raytheon a miss for now. I am not a basshead, but I do like bass.
I have a new favourite combination :) I have been listening to the Sylvania JAN CHS 6SN7GT Tube Black Plates "Chrome Dome" for a bit now. It is an awesome tube. Initially I thought it was a bit bright sounding, but magic happened when I took the Mullard 6080 tube out and put the RCA 6080WA tube in. WOW! The synergy is just sublime. Still a tad bright, but with layers of space between the instruments. PRAT is also "slightly" slower and more defined, more fluid, like I enjoy in a good valve system. It's magic. I tried very hard to like the combo with the Mullard, but sadly, it does not do it for me. I thought the Tungsol 5998A might tame the highs a bit, but no, still no magic. I have two favourite combinations now. The Sylvania with the RCA and the Ultron 6SN7 with the Mullard 6080. If I have to choose, it will be the Sylvania with the RCA. I am still waiting for the "Mouse Ears"

CurlycatPairing is very important! I'm no basshead either, but I am all about balance...so the Raytheon isn't for me as well. The kenrad vt-231 clear glass came in today. If your a fan of warm and slightly bassy like me, this is the tube for you. it isn't as 3d sounding as the black glass kenrad, but it also sells for much less. Bass and mid forward sound with very slight warmth in the treble. This paired with my RCA 6as7g 1958 power tube is brilliant with the hd600. With the 650s, the bass may be too much. I plan to test with my 6xx in a few hours. Needless to say, but kenrad and tungsol seem to be my favorite tubes so far. Rich and thick sound without sounding bloated.

The pairing with the 6xx went well. the bass was still controlled but powerful. good balanced tube. the highs are right at the line of what I consider neutral/slighly slightly slightly bright (the sweet zone for me). The mids are forward without impacting the low and high frequencies. Very nice sounding.

Currently I am letting a Svetlana 6AS7G cool off and will change that out for an RCA 6080WA, which is being paired with a Tung-Sol 6SN7GT Black Glass Oval Mica. I didn't like the pairing with the Svetlana, but my Mouse Ears Tung-Sol sounded great with the Mullard 6080 and an RCA 6AS7, but with the Svetlana, and the pairing with the Mouse Ears I was okay, but not as good as the Mullard set-up and the RCA set-up.

NateBThe Svetlana are picky to pair with from what I've heard. My RCA 5692 red base came in today. Best tube I've heard yet. Supposedly this is a "holy grail " tube...I can confirm that it is true. Leaps and bounds better than any tube I've heard. I go it for a good price too. This and the mullard are perfect . Amazed it only needed 45 minutes of burn in and 0 hum. I will say this about the Svetlana, Paired with an RCA or Sylvania, it good. A big improvement over the stock, but as you and I along with other DV tube rollers know, there are better tubes out in tubeland to purchase. The RCA 6080WA along with that Black Glass Oval Mica Tung-Sol is one of the smoothest sounding combinations I've heard. Tomorrow I think I will try the Mullard 6080 and the Tung-Sol and then with an RCA 5692 Red Base.

NateBGood to read your replies NateB and Hazi59. My Tungsol Mouse Ears arrived three days ago. Sadly there was a lot of hum. Burned it for approx 24 hours and hum all gone. First tried it with the NOS RCA6080WA, meh, it was pleasant but totally forgettable sounding. I can concur, the Mullard 6080 combo with the Mouse Ears are really good. I find the sound stage is excellent with a good amount of bass grunt without being muddy or woolly. I do like this combination very much! Still have other 6AS7 valves to try with the Mouse though. I managed to get a Kenrad VT-231, still in transit. I am also waiting for a NOS RCA 6SN7 GT smoked glass tube as well. I have to update that my favourite combination currently is the Sylvania 6SN7 Chrome Dome paired with a NOS Sylvania 6AS7. I was not too fond of the Sylvania 6AS7, a bit clinical solid state sounding, but golly, is the synergy good with the Chrome Dome. Bass lovely tight and controlled. Loads of detail and "live" in the sound. It's deffo my number one currently. Tube rolling is really awesome.

CurlycatPicked up my National Union 6SN7 from the apartment office earlier today, rolled it in with my Mullard 6080, some hum from the NU tube. After about 6 or 7 hours of use there is still some hum, not as much as earlier, I will continue to burn the tube in for about another 6 hours or so. The NU I think once the burn in process is finished will be in the tube rotation. Waiting on an Ultron 6SN7 tube to arrive from Europe. I should have that in a week or two, maybe. I do have a couple of Sylvania 6SN7 Chrome Domes. One is a 6SN7GTA, I think they are called "Bad Boy". I don't have a Sylvania 6AS7, though, I guess I should get one.

One thing I will continue to say is...go get yourself an rca 5692 red base. It is amazing how good it sounds. If you can find a Tung Sol 7236 power tube, that is the best combo. NateBWhat cans are you planning on running balanced? I went through a bunch of solid state amp upgrades last year until I got my Audio-GD NFB-11.28. Still plan on upgrading to Top of the Line end game eventually (something with power to drive anything thrown at it). For now, he NFB-11 has suited me very well. The only pairs of headphones that sounded awful on them were the Meze 99 Classics and Mr Speakers Alpha Primes. For some odd reason, the Meze 99's sounded better off of my Cayin N3 DAP, which I find extremely odd. The Alpha Primes sounded alright, but sounded much much better out of my Schiit Stack, suprisingly.
I still need to find 1 more set of Top of the Line Closed Back cans for my gaming/movies/etc needs. Right now I am enjoying my Fostex TH-X00 Mahogany, but I know there arebetter options out there.
Currently, I have my HD6xx, Beyerdynamic DT 880's (which I am using with my darkvoice), Argon Mark II (Work), Audeze LCD-2F (daily driver), Fostex TH-X00 (Gaming/Movies), and my Beyerdynamic DT 1770's (change of pace cans). The 1770's are much better than the reviews says...but I want to upgrade from them to ZMF Eikon. At that point, my end game of cans will be complete. As one can see from the above, I do enjoy my sub bass. :-)

At least my 3 pairs of Sennheisers, my 2 pairs of Hifiman, my Fostex and when I ship them off maybe my Mr. Speakers to start. I have my Sennheiser HD6XX hooked up to my DV. My S.M.S.L. SD-793II just doesn't have the power, but it does have a decent DAC. When I get my new Solid State amp the 793 goes to my son. I have a stand alone DAC.

NateBWhich Hifiman do you have? I had the he-400i but they were too bright in the 4 to 6khz area for me. Damn upper mids sensitivity. A shame too cause they sounded pleasant, but caused me fatigue.

I made a mistake, I am sending off two pairs of cans to Modhouse, not Mr. Speakers. I am waiting on three more tubes, to come in, and that will be the end of experimenting with tubes on the DV. I am burning in an Ultron tube I received today in the mail. A bit of hum, but we know what to do for that!

NateBCool, Argon is the best t50rp mod by far. Which pads did you choose? Let me know how the Ultron works. I got a CBS 6AS7G recently and it is excellent. Only cost $15 and is great. Mullard 6080 and tungsol 7236 are still the best power tubes I've heard.

NateBNateB - I am curious and reluctant at the same time to ask what you think of the Ultron?
I purchased a Sylvania 6SN7GTA tube - nice tube, but totally forgettable. Bass is very thin. It does not have any of the pzazz the GT "Chrome Dome" has.
My RCA 6SN7GT smoked glass arrived. I will be looking for another as a backup. The valve is definitely the best in my collection to date. The sound stage is very 3D and imaging is sublime. Synergy is very good with all my power tubes. What struck me most of this valve is how revealing it is ... Very. An absolutely stunning valve! I kept on turning the volume up and could not stop listening to music. Highly recommended valve.
I am still looking for an 5692 RCA red base and a 5998 Tungsol - that will be it for me to make my collection complete.

CurlycatI love the gray glass rca, listening to it now paired with a Sylvania 6080wc. That combo is excellent. Did you notice thefaint reverb effect I referred to? Like you are in an auditorium 5 rows back with acoustic echo. Lovely sound.
Good luck with the 5998 , they are expensive and rare. I myself am searching for one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Yes, I did actually now that you mention it. I think it adds to the sound stage projection. Really happy with the tube. Pairing with the Mullard 6080 now. Strangely enough, it sounded fantastic with the Tungsol 5998A - I did not expect that. I would say that's my second pairing choice, though I must admit the 5998A pairing gives a very solid state sound, but a good one though. I am in no hurry for a 5998, scarce and pricey sadly yes. I have a fair collection now. One thing that became very clear is, not just if tubes are well renowned for being a good tube, but how well they pair with the other tube has a big effect. So synergy sometimes provide welcoming surprises.

CurlycatAbsolutely. That Raytheon tube I have only sounds good with my RCA 6as7g JAN. Any power tube paired with it sounds too shouty in the mids. Different headphones make a difference too. What sounds good on my hd650 doesn't necessarily sound good on my DT880.

CurlycatI started a burn-in, but stopped it because I wanted to do some pleasure listening. I need to get back on the burn-in, but so far it has an overall from high end to low end sound that is rich, the only problem right now is on low passages the hum comes through.

I also have a Ken Rad vt-231, and it hums. Attempted to burn for hours...

CurlycatI just figured I would try the RCA VT-231 Gray Glass/Smoked Glass with my Tung Sol 7236 power tube...holy mother of God!!! That is THE power tube that you are going to want to use with the RCA VT-231. This has just taken the bass, lower mids and soundstage to a whole new level of bliss for me. If you haven't picked up that Tung Sol 7236 yet...this is a reason to definately do so.

NateBThe NU sounded really good with the Mullard...but I actually liked it better with my CBS/Hytron 6AS7G. It gives them a little more "oomph". But it still sounded very good with the Mullard. The NU is an interesting tube as it looks very similar in design and construction to the Raytheon 6SN7GT that I have...but they both couldn't sound anymore different from each other. Tube rolling can be very interesting...

NateBI like the Ultron tube, Curlycat, it has a nice “tube” sound. I was not paying close attention and plugged my headphones into my solid state. It just so happened at the time I was listening to the music, the guitars were using some kind of tube overdrive, thus adding to the confusion. I will try using my Beyerdynamic 770 250 ohm headphones next to check for the hum.

NateBCool...those Brimar's are soooo rare and hard to track down. I really want one, but haven't been able to catch a good deal price wise yet. At the moment, I have the TungSol 7236 and RCA VT-231 Grey glass in the Darkvoice. A great song to listen to for vocals, instrument separation and timbre is "Killer Wolf" by Danzig. Killer combination.
Side note...I upgraded from the SMSL M6 to the Schiit Modi Multibit DAC in my chain. The differences are subtle, but I feel the Modi Multibit provides a tad more detail and quantity in the low end...in the 20 hz to 100 hz range. The SMSL M6 really was great, but I feel like the Modi Multibit meshes better with the Darkvoice. Better synergy.

I got one of the Brimar tubes off eBay, (I know certain people don’t like getting tubes off eBay) for under $30.00. I really like the tube and what it adds to the NU tube, extra reverb sound. Finally my Ken Rad VT-231 arrived after being intercepted by customs. No hum. Very glad, you know when you get a new tube, you want to listen... you don't want to contend with hum... dead silent. Hazi59, you were right. It is a lovely valve, especially in the bass department :) What I love about the valve, in addition to the bass, is the sound stage. It has more 3D dimension and depth than the other 6SN7 valves I have. However, seems like synergy is key. It pairs lovely with the Sylvania NOS 6AS7, second best is the Tungsol 5998A, then the RCA6080WA and lastly the Mullard 6080. Bass with the Sylvania 6AS7 is lush, full but tight. Very revealing sound. You know, when you get that urge and you cant stop listening... that's what I get with the Ken Rad and the Sylvania. Higly recommended. Thanks Hazi59!

CurlycatAwesome that you like the Ken Rad VT-231 Black Glass...it is a great tube. I don't personally think there is a 6SN7 tube or equivalent with better bass response. If you combine it with the right 6AS7 tube, you have magic. It pairs very very well with my Tung Sol 7236, Sylvania 6080WC, Mullard 6080, and my RCA JAN CRC-6AS7G. I think the Tung Sol and the RCA sound the best though.

I have taken delivery of a Shuguang Treasure today, will see how it goes.
Initially it has a low level hum in the left channel when paired with my TS 6080 (I also have a Psvane hifi this also has a hum, which has nearly dissipated with about 40 hours on it). Initially ran for a couple of hours with a HP 6AS7 (GE) with this the hum is barely noticeable.
Running with Sennheiser cans at present, rather than the Beyerdynamic DT990s and I would personally think the treasure would be bright on the BD cans. I will probably need a few hours with treasure to make an honest assessment.
A community member
Aug 28, 2018
David_LIheard the treasure is bright, so it would definitely eliminate certain headphones pairings. On something like the hd650, it may be an ideal pairing (not for me, I'm sensitive to upper mids lower treble). If the response of the other frequencies linear and not peaky, it may be something I'd consider.

CurlycatJust discovered something unexpected...I picked up a cheap RCA 6080 silver base. Paired it with the Kenrad vt-231 black glass and the faint hum that remained on the kenrad disappeared. I decided to roll a few other 6as7 and 6080 tubes with the kenrad just too eliminate further burn in out as to why the kenrad is suddenly silent. Upon doing that, the hum returned. From this point forward, my RCA 6080 is going to be best friends with my Kenrad vt-231, lol. Remember that my results may be unique and ymmv, but no more kenrad hum at all, zero!

That's great to hear. Nice pic Hazi59! I like those cheap silver base RCA6080 valves :) Nothing as disappointing as a good sounding valve or amplifier and you can't get rid of hum. I have a Northern Electric 6SN7 tube with slight hum that does not want to go away... well anyway not yet... I am hopeful still. I'll try your trick. It's quite a good sounding valve, clinical, but nice. I am still liking my Ken Rad VT-231 a lot and probably my most favorite pre tube currently. Out of curiosity I have a Westinghouse 6SN7 and a Zearix 6080 valve inbound. If they are any good I will update here. Happy listening.

Well popped the TS 6080WB back in tonight with the treasure and the hum has almost dissipated now.
The TS being a Bendix graphite is fairly heavy tube and takes time to warm up unlike other 6080's (Mullard, Brimar, Thompson).
The treasure still needs a few more hours on it before I can make an honest assessment (many users state they require 60-100 hours), but as it stands I will be persevering with the tube which is certainly a step-up over the Psvane hifi). The sound stage is really expansive and on certain tracks I am hearing some subtle differences.

CurlycatThat is true, there is no best tube, it is really has to do with the type of music you are listening to at the time and what is required for that music to sound its best, i. e. for Classical Music I would probably team an RCA 6AS7 with an RCA 5692, or for certain genres of rock, I and the NU 6SN7 or one of my Tung-Sol 6SN7!

Oh My! What a surprise! I struck sonic bliss with the Westinghouse 6SN7 valve. I actually just purchased another one. I have compared it to a genuine Sylvania 6SN7 GT Crome Dome and the Ken Rad VT-231. It does have similarities with the Sylvania but IMO it sounds much more like the Ken Rad. Same huge sound stage as the Ken Rad, but a slightly bigger stereo stage and more depth than the Ken Rad. It does not have the low bass of the Ken Rad but it is more revealing and has a better top end. Mids are more or less the same, but with the larger sound stage, it makes my foot tap even more. I have not had the chance to compare it to my RCA 6SN7 GT smoked glass, but I have a suspicion, it's a close call for a twin sounding tube, perhaps just a tad more mellow and warm. I have not had real listening time with the Zearix 6080 valve yet. (Disclaimer: My ears, my setup)

NateBThose Western Electric tubes are very rare and very pricey. It is cool that you were able to obtain one. From what I have read about them, they are very very similar to a cross between the RCA 5692 Red Base and the RCA VT-231 Gray Glass tubes, have that reverb (echo) sound. Bass is thick, mids are full and highs are neutralish. Sound about right?

OK, so I have really been enjoying my Westinghouse 6SN7 valve very much. But, it was time to give the Zearix 6080 a go and roll in some 6SN7 tubes that I know well and test the Zearix. The Zearix was purchased in lieu of a NOS Mullard 6080. My local guy suggested I try it, since he did not have stock of the Mullard 6080. The NOS Zearix is a British made tube. I am very glad I did. Feel that the TS-6SN7 is now lacking in detail and depth when compared to the Treasure and I am probably still a few hours from really burning it in completely.

CurlycatI probably have a serious case of Treasure bias.
The Psvane is okay, but a few differences exist to me.
The Psave had a pronounced hum when it arrived, I spent 60 hours of burn in on the tube and it is now fine. However it is not a tube I reach for over various NOS 6SN7s.
While the treasure had a very faint left channel hum on arrival, so I did not even bother with burn in it now has probably 30-40 hours of listening time against it. And I have only switched it out one evening last week for a Tungsol 6SN7 for a comparison.
The treasure I don't see any need to remove at present, I may swap out the power tube again but at present running alongside a Tungsol 6080WB.
I am way off the suggested burn in time for the Treasure " Suggested burn-in time 150-300 hours. Most changes happen in the first 150 hours. "
Swapped out the TS 6080WB for a Sylvania 5998A this evening and this adds a little more warmth to the sound, just listened to The Double Planet by Michael Hedges.
The Darkvoice keeps adding a level of enjoyment to my music listening.

NateBWhen I was upgrading my DAC for the DarkVoice, I was actually debating between the JDS Labs EL DAC and the Schiit Modi Multibit. I went with the Modi Multibit, due to a great price on a lightly used unit. I don't think you can go wrong with either DAC. I will say that the Modi Multibit definately pairs extremely well with the DarkVoice and I notice a huge difference in the 50-100 hz area...definately more pronounced on the Modi Multibit (which is good according to my sound signature preferences). Definately highly recommend the Modi Multibit.

Actually Schiit Modi is one of the DACs I am considering. So thank you for the suggestion.

CurlycatMy Zaerix finally came in the mail today. I dropped into the DV with at first one of my Tung-Sols and then a Westinghouse. Good call on the Westinghouse tube, it is a tubey sounding tube, but the Tung-Sol is slightly better. I will post a picture soon, Curlycat.

NateBGlad to hear. Hope you like the Zearix tube, please let us know. I do agree on the Westinghouse tubes. I have two now. The one with the bottom getter and 3 holes in the plates sounds really good. I scored with that tube. Wondering if Sylvania "Bad Boys" were ever re-branded as Westinghouse?

CurlycatThat does look similar to a Sylvania, but I don't believe bad boys were rebranded. If my memory is correct, Westinghouse rebranded RCA tubes. Either way, RCA tubes are pretty great.

NateBBeen rolling new tubes past 2 weeks.
Sylvania vt-231...I didn't care for it. Mid forward, no low end and sterile highs.
The kenrad vt-231 I received is fantastic as usual.
Was able to score a Chatham JAN-CAHG 6AS7G . This is my favorite 6as7 tube so far. Pairs really well with Kenrad vt-231, RCA 5692 and National Union 6sn7gt. Highly recommended.

Thanks bud, It does look like a Sylvania Bad Boy, minus the branding. Anyway, not as if am selling the tube. It is a lovely sounding tube. Glad you are sorted with the "new" Ken Rad NOS... I definitely have too many tubes now. I think perhaps one or two more power tubes for my collection and then I am done. 10 x 6SN7 tubes, phew and 5 power tubes. Should keep me going for a while :)

David_LThat's the thing with tube rolling and the DarkVoice.... it is so easy and inexpensive. No need for matched quad sets etc, etc. Just one pre and one power tube. Mostly readily available still. In this case the Treasure. It's a very good tube for new edition production. I would gladly live with only the Treasure were there no NOS anymore. I suggest you try some of the other pre and power NOS tubes and hopefully you will be smiling some more.

CurlycatThis is the Zaerix power tube with the Tung-Sol "Mouse Ears" preamp tube. I am really enjoying this set-up right now. Also I have plugged in is the Sennheiser HD 600.

David_LI picked up my Psvane tube from the apartment office today. Dropped it into the DV and I'm in hum protocol. Still waiting on the Shuguang tube.

David_LThe hum is almost gone, I had to turn off the unit to go to the store and run some other errands. So about 2 1/2 - 3 hours of run time. That is good. No 100 hour or so to get rid of the hum, I figure tomorrow night I will run the DV another few hours and no hum.

NateBThe Treasure is out of the DV this morning with the arrival of a National Union VT-231
The NU like my other VT-231 has a hum so will need some burn in, I may drop both of these into another device and the Treasure will return the to DV.

David_LI had to run the Psvane for probably a little over 2 hours to fully get rid of the hum. Now I am in a listening mode. I have the Zaerix 6080 paired with the Psvane and also for cans I am using the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 Ohm. What I have noticed is that this tube is better for Garage Rock than any other type of music. The different frequencies come through strong, but to me not a lot of reverb effect like you have with some other tubes. In a little while I will change this tube out and try The Treasure.

David_LAbout the Psvane tube, I think that you can tell that you are using a tube amp, but not much on the reverb effect, but low end is booming, but it doesn't take over the song. Vocal are crisp and the instruments are very clear. High end is right on time and no sibilance.

NateBI would agree with the reverb on the Psvane, after purchasing the DV I put on Rory Gallagher's album Top Priority and the reverb with various NOS tubes added a new dimension to the album.
Indeed the DV has become a double edged sword, I found new enjoyment to music listening at the expense of no longer really wanting to listen to music on solid state devices.
What power tube have you in the DV with the Psvane?
I find the warmth the Mullard 6080 alters the sound certainly over a Tung-sol 6080 or the Sylvania 5998A, although I appreciate detail these add over the Mullard.

David_LI had the Zaerix 6080. I now have the Sylvania 6080 with the Treasure. A tad bit of hum. not much but so far I'm liking more than the Psvane. I will run for a few hours and then check the Treasure at that point.

David_LI got an Aune S7 and a SMSL SU-8 DAC, so I am going to try out balanced. Waiting on some balanced cables for my Sennheisers and my Audeze EL-8 Closed Back. Also I am waiting on a digital SPDIF splitter, which should be in Thursday. The cables have to be made so it will be a few weeks. Also to me David_L right now my DAC/Amp just doesn't have the power to push some of headphones I own, but on the phones it can push I still listen to music on the SMSL 793II.

NateBI immediately recognized the Zearix with that brown band between the base of the tube and the glass. It is very distinct. I must try it with the Mouse Ears. Wishing you many happy listening hours. Cool picture :)

David_LPlease post your findings about the NU VT-231 once you have had a chance to listen without hum. I just started listening to a Silvertone branded 1952 NU 6SN9GT black glass tube. (This is suppose to be an expensive $100 tube? ) Initial results are promising, though I do think the tube is a bit bright, but like I said, I need to do some listening before I can really comment. But one thing is for sure, it will be one of my favorite tubes. It has a great sound stage and dimension. The last power tube I used with it was the Sylvania NOS 6AS7 which was a great pairing, in fact the best I have heard so far... You know, when you just want to carry on listening to music... I have tried the NOS RCA 6080, NOS Tungsol 5998A, the NOS Mullard 6080 and the NOS Zearix 6080. The Sylvania, much to my surprise paired the best so far. (Strangely because the Sylvania 6SN7 is a bit bright sounding too) The Zearix is up there too, but have to revisit to comment.

Well roundly agree on Sylvania vt-231 one arrived today and swapped out the Shuguang treasure and listened to a few tracks.
Played Red Clay and Ron Carter is no longer playing on the track, and the highs unsatisfying would be an understatement.
Will try with other power tubes to see if I can find a better combination for the tube, the Tung-sol 6080WB might be a better match than the Sylvania 5998a which is currently in my DV.

NateBJust a heads up, I just completed the Fitz Mod and all hum is gone. I tested every tube I have, no hum at all. I even tested low impedance headphones as well, hum has been eliminated.

NateBIt is relatively simple if you are handy with a soldering iron. You are adding 2x 220uf 16v nichicon capacitors. 2pcs Nichicon VX Axial Capacitors - 16v 220uF 8x16 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0745JK2NN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_f-v2CbT8Y7GN4 I did it all while referencing a few photos I found on head fi. I'm shocked at how silent it is. Even the noise floor has been brought down. I'm kind of curious why darkvoice amps arent built with these factory installed.

NateBThese are the pictures I used from Head Fi. I was unable to take pictures of mine tonight, but I used the same capacitors in the pic. They are the long blue ones. You are connecting the 4 and 8 o'clock pins from the driver socket to the central rail. That's it!

CurlycatHello, how are you doing? I have a new favorite pairing that I have been using for a few weeks now. A Telefunken 6080 and an NOS Tung-Sol 6SN7. The Telefuken is so smoooooth and of course the TS gives the sound tubeness.
